"Most laying hens in North America are beak-trimmed as young chicks in order to prevent potential outbreaks of
injurious feather-pecking and cannibalistic behavior that can result from such intensive confinement in barren
conditions, as well as to reduce feed wastage of adult birds!."Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because the hens are living so tightly together, with no personal space, and no space to move properly, they get aggravated and try to peck their cage-mates, causing fights and injuries!. The beaks are sliced off so they can't peck each other!.
It is a extremely painful procedure!. The beak does have nerves in it, so the bird can find food when foraging!. It would be similar to slicing off a humans finger, with no pain relief at all!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
