I run a daycare out of my home!. I provide care for 2-5 year olds!. In my experience, fruits are easy to get them to eat!.!.!. but vegetables bring about a sense of "grossness" from most of them!.

In preparing my last menu to suit the Canada food guide, I determined that dairy and meat are EASY to get the recommended daily portions into most children!.!.!. but F&V are harder!.

So I developed a strategy that I expected to take 2 weeks to work, but to my surprise, it was working VERY well within 6 days!.

I portioned out the meals on a divided plate, and told the children that I would be happy to give desert to any child that ate all their veggies!. Nothing else on the plate came into the "desert decision"!.

On day one, 2 children were upset, and refused to try their veggies!. On day 2, 1 child was left out!. By day 6!.!.!. all the children were enjoying MOST of their meal!.!.!. and rewarded for their sense of adventure in trying new foods!.

Initially, it seemed their veggies were eaten, but a lot of other food was left on their plates!.!.!. but that has balanced out now!.

It's like everything else in raising children!.!.!.!. Positive reinforcement and rewards for positive actions work FAR better than negative words or consequences!.

Don't let them be the boss of you
don't try too hard to "disguise" or "dip" the veggies just so they'll eat them!. You might find yourself in a situation (a dinner at someone elses house) were the circumstances will not be suitable to ask something like "Can I please have some squirt cheese!? make that low fat, thanks" So you might have to have a little chat on how if they dont eat their veggies, they wont grow taller or they can get sick, if theyre really small come up with an exaggerated anectdote about a family member that turned purple because he didnt eaat his brussel sprouts, you know what i mean!. There are plenty of at home ideas that have probably already been given and can be useful at times, but if you really get down on it, vegetables will be a part of their life whether they want to or not and they will not always be in appealing disguises!.

how about preparing them right so they're easy to eat!.!. fresh fruits and veggies aren't that bad!.!. get them into the habit!.!.!. NO faking them out!.!.

just be stern!.!. because they must adopt the habit of eating right!.!.!.

i hate it when folks say play tricks or games on the child to get them to eat their fruits and veggies!.!. that idea usually fails!.!. and later on they take to processed foods and give up the fresh, whole food ideal that we must use as a staple for eating!.

no game!.!. just talk to them about health!.!.!. veggies and fruits are essential!.!. learn them good about obesity, hypertension, stroke, heart attack other issues, GERD, processed food allergies, poisons in chemical additives used in foods to extend their shelf life, so on!.!.

teach them about how fast foods, snacks, frozen, canned, other processed foods including dairy are low in minerals and vitamin, high in chemical processing and bad for the digestive tract, including the colon!.

they must learn and be honest!.!.!. getting to love your fruits and veggies isn't that hard!.

also get them into soymilk!.!.!. how about making smoothies!? soymilk with fresh fruits, berries!.!. bananas!.!.!. things like that!.!. a fruit smoothie is excellent source of potassium, vitamin c, vit b-12!.!. so on!.

then get a juicer!.!.!. get them into juicing their veggies!.!. carrot juice is excellent!.!.!. mix it up!.!.!. i also dig the dickens out of carrot and orange juice!.!. carrot and cucumber juice!.!. apple and banana juice!.!. so on!.

these ideas alone, not including proper steaming and roasting of veggies and fruits are so vitamin and mineral packed!.!.!. they'll have more energy, be more healthy and have lesser health issues!.!.!.

just in my breakfast alone of steamed spinach, apple, orange juice, soy milk, avocado and grapes i get more vitamins and minerals just in my breakfast than most do in one week eating their processed junk!.

by the way, meat is NOT an essential protein element!.!. it's insoluable proteins, which means the body doesn't absorb it!.!. the body just stores it as fats!.!.!. lipids!.!. (cholesterol) and triglycerides!.!. which is artery plaque!.

so on!.

do the education!.!. get them to know the pains of lazy eating and not enjoying fresh fruits and veggies!. (canned fruits and veggies don't have much in minerals and vitamins!.!. they are packed in sodium and other chemicals!.!.!.!. it's not a good source of anything!.) same goes with frozen!.!. the foods have been cooked prior to freezing and most of the essential elements have been processed out!.

honesty is the best policy!.!.!.!. it's hard but over time!.!.!. it'll work out!.

i just find tricking a child to eat their veggies fails over time!.!.!. once they get away from the game!.!. they get away from the idea of them eating right in the first place!.

just be to the point!.!.!.!.!. they must eat right!.

or they'll really have a hard time later on in life with so many situations and not just their health!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I use to buy low fat dips, cheese, and let them dip!.Their favorite believe it or not was ketchup on any kind of cooked vegetable I made!. It worked!. And they dipped all the fresh stuff in cheese or low fat dips, the squirt cheese works good for that, plus they have fun doing it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have discovered that my grandkids will eat just about any veggie along with a dip!.!.!.so get creative with dips!. It can be as simple as a homemade ranch dressing, or a mayo-mixed-with-ketchup dip!. They like hummus, too!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

mAYBE get them to help with the cooking, it has to include vegetables though for them to like them!. Then they will see how fun it is that they might consider trying a vegWww@FoodAQ@Com

Stealthily include them into junk food!. Puree spinach and include in brownies!. Puree carrots and add to chocolate cake!. Broccoli mac and cheese!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You could cut them up into fun shapes or try to disguise them in other food so they won't be able to tell that they're eating vegetables!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well you can make it like a game for them!. Like who can eat more, or such!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
