Question about fish oil.....?!

Question: Question about fish oil!.!.!.!.!.!?
I often read they are not equivalent and that DHA from fish oil is better than DHA from algae!. In fact, according to Dr Weil - "fish oil is a better source of DHA than algae because it contains these fatty acids in the form that the body requires" http://www!.drweil!.com/drw/u/id/QAA244314

What exactly does he mean!? How is the DHA from fish oil different from algae DHA!?

If anyone has any info on this it would be very appreciated!. I'd prefer algae DHA since I don't like eating fish or taking fish oil supplements!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
DHA is short for Docosahexaenoic acid!. It's an omega-3 essential fatty acid!. Its pretty much the same stuff regardless of where it comes from!. The only major differences are in concentration!.

I suspect the reason he says fish oil is better is because it contains other kinds of fatty acids that some non-fish stuff does not!.

The algae is actually a very good source of dha!. You can meet all your dietary requirements for dha by taking a dha supplement that's from algae!.

edit: lacto-ovo and ovo vegetarians can get dha from chicken eggs, caviar, and fish oil supplements derived from fish eggs!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I can't find anything other than Dr!. Weil's site that says that one is better than the other!. Fish oil also contains EPA, but that doesn't really affect the absorption of DHA!. Fish get their DHA from algae, so it doesn't make sense that there would be a difference!. It's more concentrated in fish (essentially bioaccumulation), but by the time it gets to you in the pill they should be the same concentration!.

Both of these sources are better than land-plant omega 3 sources (e!.g!. walnuts), because they have long chain DHA instead of short chain!. But if you're choosing between algae and fish, I don't think you need to worry about algae being inferior!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Although Spirulina and Chlorella are beneficial, humans would normally consume fish, so fish oil to me is superiorWww@FoodAQ@Com

yeah, and about what Matt T!. said, the DHA in silk is derived from an algae called carageenan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

don't know, but my memory is better when i have silk soymilk with DHA and flaxseed oil with DHAWww@FoodAQ@Com

my info is that real oil from real fish ocean caught (not even bred) is the best!.tmmWww@FoodAQ@Com
