Question: I need help being a vegetarian!.!?
Yesterday I decided to become a vegetarian!. I'm an 18 year old male and weigh a little over 250 pounds with quite a bit of muscle mass that I'm afraid to lose (all the fat can go though!)!. I'm also straight edge!.

Sadly, a common misconception is that vegetarianism is not a healthy choice!. Many people who do not know other vegetarians, imagine an big, empty, black hole where the meat once stood on your plate!. In truth, vegetarianism IS a healthy choice!. In fact, it is one of the main reasons (and ethical reasons) why people decide to make the transition!. Just your cholesterol alone will plummet!.

If you do not know any other vegetarians, you need to make sure that you are getting plenty of the right foods!. Here are some great resource:

VeganWorld, an online social network, similar to myspace!. This will help you network with others and find out anything you want to know!.

Vegetarian for Dummies, an extensive book for beginners!. Only about $20 and you can even drop in Boarders and read it for free!. Includes a break down of vitamins, amino acids, and other nutritional information that you need!. It even has a daily list of what to eat each day, if you're unsure at first!. This book will also show you how many grams of protein you need each day and how to calculate that, according to your weight!. There is also a cook book in the back!.

In regards to keeping muscle mass, keep working out and do what non veggies to: drink protein shakes and eat power bars!. I drink protein shakes every morning!. You will prob want to double check that with someone who works out a great deal on Vegan World!. I have kept my muscle mass but I am not into body building, like you might be!.

Your local vegetarian society, most areas have one!.

If you want to be double sure since this is new to you, go see a nutritionist!.

Most grocery stores, have garden burgers, soy hot dogs, soy bacon, etc!. It's a great way to still eat the things that you are familiar with!. Most stores have it in a sep area as well as mixed in with foods that are similar!. (ie) Soy dogs with hot dogs!. Be sure to check both areas cause items are somethings different in different areas!.

All in all, once you start networking with other vegetarians, you'll find that there are far more options after soy dogs and veggie burgers!. Ethnic foods are a staple in my diet, for example!.

In truth, it's not going to be a whole lot different once you are doing it for a bit!.

Beans, nuts, soy products like tofu or soymilk, and fake meat products all have a lot of protein in them!. The tofurkey brand mock sausages are wonderful and I have never even liked regular sausage and they are loaded with fat and protein!. You can probably find these in the fridge section of a health food store!.

Follow Your Heart is good vegan cheese, but it's better to use it for cooking than eating plain!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Soy, nuts, beans and eggs have plenty of protein in them!. So if you are use to eating meat a lot in your diet, you may want to eat more then one serving of each!. also, add Whey protein to shakes to keep your muscle mass!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

the best vegan cheese on this side of the atlantic is follow your heart mozzarella or monterey jack!. the monterey jack is really good!.

have plenty of raw nuts and good fats like olive oil

well i suggest salad!. but what ever you eat i suggest you should stay away from eggplant cause they contain/absorb up a lot and that will increase your body fat and decrease your muscle mass!. and you should eat all your veggies with ranch :) cause ranch puts a lot of flavor into your veggies!. and eat a lot of carrot it helps you see in the dark better!. but you shouldn't b a vegetarian!. Think of all the cow, piggy, chicken, and the fishes that is waiting to be eaten!. think about your health! being a vegetarian is good but you're not gonna have that much health if you continued to be a vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
