Mom wont let me be vegan...?!

Question: Mom wont let me be vegan!.!.!.!?
Okay, I'm a vegetarian, and last year I tried to become vegan!. My mom has no problem with me replacing milk with soy milk, but she doesn't want to buy me a lot of extra food (since my whole family LOVES meat and dairy, and dairy seems to be in everything in my house)!. She's scared I wont get proper nutrition, and she'll not have anything to feed me!. The last time I told her, she yelled at me and grounded me!. What do you think she'll say if I tell her this-
1!. I'll start to expand what I'm eating, and try new foods
2!. I'll cook my own meals
3!. I will make sure that I'm getting proper nutrition, which is very possible on a vegan diet

also, I can't get a job to pay for my own food, I'm only 14Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Ok!.!. here is what you do that might help your mother!.

1) Do a LOT of research, research the nutrient content of foods!.!.!. and make a list (or use a program) that allows you to assure you get the proper amount of vitamins, minerals, calories, fats needed for your body!.

2) Be ( I CANNOT emphasize this enough) fairly NON-BIAS in telling her why you want to try a vegan lifestyle!. Show her what you have researched, to prove that you actually KNOW a bit of what you're doing!. (EX: Stating, dairy is unhealthy and will kill you due to high fat content, isn't a good excuse!. However saying that "eating a diet from non-animal sources has been believed to !.!.!.!., the proper nutrients can be aquired from eating a combination of !.!.!. and !.!.!., ect)"

3) If still not convinced, ask her if getting another opinion might help!. Talk to a nutritionist, this will help her understanding of what you're doing, you will likely learn quite a bit and they may have handouts to help get started!.

For your questions about what they might say:
1) You can try new foods that also contain dairy/(eggs!? didn't say if you ate this or not)!. Limiting yourself to a vegan diet is not expanding what you can eat, as you narrow down your ingredient selection of what may be used (and I'm not paying extra for some fancy stuff no one else will eat!.!. *IDK if she'd say this*)

Suggestion: Instead of going vegan immediately, ease into it!.!.!. start by saying you'll still be eating a vegetarian diet!.!. but suggest trying a vegan meal once a week (for you or your family), then 2x a week!.!. and so on!. If this fits into your family's budget, it might be doable for your mother to make or allow you to make vegan meals!.

3) All in all, consult a nutritionist for this one, I would not say this!.!.!. simply because if new to anything!.!. it normally takes trial/error to get it right!. also start slowly!.!. don't just go from vegetarian --> vegan diet, ease into it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Ok first of all, everyone saying vegan is wrong, your wrong!. No one is personally attacking your lifestyle so how about you don't either!

Tell her that meat and dairy is way more expensive then tofu and soy products!. Tell her that you can get all of your nutrients from the stuff you eat, the only thing vegans lack in is vitamin B12, you can take it in a supplement form that's vegan friendly!. Tell her that she shouldn't stop you from making the choices that you want, and that your old enough to do that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Happy to hear you're looking to join the vegan community ;) Welcome! She can't really control what you do and do not eat, but if you want to try to get her to support you in this endeavor then those reasons are definitely valid!. You can also point out to her that she won't really need to buy a lot more food!. if you're planning on eating potatoes, rice, and things of this nature, they are cheap and easy to find!. In fact, by becoming a vegan, it will probably save them money!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it is actually a scientific fact we vegetarians get more protein (the good kind) in our diet than the dairy and meat consumers!. eating vegan is also more echo friendly, it take more carbon to make a pound of meat than a pound of green beans!. I think you should explain to her how much better you feel when you are vegan, and how much safer it is for your body!. Maybe the "you actually are keeping me safer this way" trick will work good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

not only would it be pretty expensive for your family (it sounds like), but, vegans have a lot of problems with their diets!. They usually don't receive enough protein in the vegan diet along with other essential vitamins!. It's ok to try new foods, but you shouldn't start a whole new diet from what your body isn't used to!. I also had a vegan friend, and she was in the nurses office it seemed 2-3 times a week!. She was really weak from a poor diet!. Be careful!Www@FoodAQ@Com

you should tell her 'hey i'm not asking for birth control, getting tattoos or doing drugs! support my diet choice' Educate her on the vegan diet if she's willing to listen, its not that much more expensive plus your body is worth it!. who knows maybe the rest of your family would actually enjoy vegan food if they gave it a chance!. show her those horrible slaughterhouse videos if it doesn't work!. good luck to you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

For everyone saying being a vegan is super expensive BS its cheaper!! Have you seen how expensive meat and cheese is!. Honey its a tough situation you're in but i really admire you for sticking to your beliefs! I wish i was that cool at 14!. My advice is research veganism thoroughly (cost of food and nutritional value) and show your mum, if she continues to serve you meat and dairy just refuse to eat it!. She's your mum she wont let you starve!.
Good luck!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Don't steal money or food!. Along with what you suggested get nutritional information and calmly share the information with your mom!. She is trying to look out for you and scared that you might not get everything you need!. She is also having a hard time understanding your decision!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wow, I know exactly how you feel!.!.

My mom is the same way, if I mention the word vegan, she gets really mad!.!.So I try not to mention it around her!.

What I do, I don't eat it, I just hide it from her!.

Then if you feel like shes cooled down, you could gradually ask her for things you want!.

Thats the best I can do!.!. hope it helps! :]Www@FoodAQ@Com

The nutrition thing can be resolved by looking up online what you can eat!.

The thing you got to realize is that vegans have to be rich because that food is way more expensive then normal fatty foods!.

So you might have to wait on that and just make due with what you have in your household nowWww@FoodAQ@Com

since she grounded you, you need to show her that you only eat vegetarian foods!. If she offers meat at meal time, leave it apart and eat what u can eat!. Your mum will then be worried about u staving and slowly accept that ur a vegetarian and start vegetarian foods for you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If she doesn't like it, and you honestly do think it's right, then do it!. It's what Gandhi did, it's what King did, and look at them!. History's greatest people!.

VEGETARIAN POWER!Www@FoodAQ@Com

explain
or
just start with some dairy and some soy
or
just stop eating food with dairy in it!.
or
try to show her that non-dairy is good to!.
maybe she would like it to!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Your mom should respect your decision and let you be a vegetarian

You can also be an ovo- or lacto- vegetarian

You can have dairy products if you are a lacto vegetarianWww@FoodAQ@Com

then do it and show her you canWww@FoodAQ@Com

either eat meat and deal with your mom or get emancipated!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I will try to give you an analogy, A person I know had a daughter who decided to become a vegan, after several months she started to get an obscure skin condition which would'nt clear up!.
The mother took her to a dermatologist who asked many questions, and discovered that she was a vegan, the doctor said there is no harm in being a vegan provided you eat a balanced diet which should include red meat at least once a week !!!!!! You are a vegan and I am a methodist!. !!!!!
LATER
I don't know if you are aware of it, but we are here today as the human race because we decided to be omnivoresWww@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, show your mom that this is something you feel really passionate about, ask her to bring you to a nutritionist that specializes in vegan food and tell her that you will get the correct nutrtition and that you know how important it is that you get all your required vitamins!.
That's sucky that your mom won't let you be vegan but, I'm sure it's because she thinks she's preventing you from doing something "silly"!. Which is not the case, not at all!. Visit http://www!.vegansociety!.com they have lots of information on vegan nutrition and vegan teens!. You can buy a vegan cookbook and start preparing cheap vegan meals that all your family will eat once they see how nice it is!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think thats good i have the same problem!.!.!.!. well at least she didnt make u eat meat my friends mom lilertaly forced it in to her mouth *shudder*
I think ur plan sounds good what u really need though is to print research offline saying that vegans get as much nutrition as anyone!.!.!. and like sum website that says like reasons to be vegean if they have a vegetarian one i am sure they will have a vegan one!.!.!.!.!.!. Hey i wish u the very best of luck i know it can be hard but really i wud print ff sumthing saying that u will be fine on protien ect!. maybe even sumthing that says its better as boring as it may sound i really think u should get sum reason knoing it will probablly end in a fight u need to tell her look at this page i found u know ust as a backround if it comes down to the worst which i utterly hope it does not for ur sake ust avoid foods with dairy eat casionally!.!.!.!. Well the cows ect!. will sure thank u for not abusing them and killing them nad all of those male chickens suffocated in plastic bags (ouch) so i srry this is so long hope i dont take too much of ur time to read this good luck!!!!!!!:)

Aww, my parents are the same way!. And I'm 14, too!

I already replace milk with soy milk, but whenever I bring up veganism my parents laugh or yell at me!. I can't completely avoid milk and dairy unless they agree to buy me some special products, and they won't!.

Right now my game plan is to give them a month or to to get used to my vegetarian diet!. I will not bring it up during this time!. Then, when they are convinced that this is not a phase, I will tell them about my research online and that I do not want to support the egg or dairy industry!. I will present them with facts and show them the movie earthling!. Then, I will not put anything in my mouth if it contains animal products!.

I will probably be hungry for a few days, but I'm sure I'll survive!. Then, when they know I'm serious, they'll have to feed me, right!?

Well, thats my plan!. I hope you can come up with one that fits your life!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

heey, ok so im the same age and my mom freaked out when i told her i wanted to be vegan!. She had the same reaction as your mom did!. I basically brought it up 1 month later after she screamed at me that i wasn't going to get enough nutrition and shrivel up into nothing!. I later explained to her that eating vegan is 100% cheaper than meat or poultry!. When your a vegan and you can't eat eggs you can buy that box of powdered fake eggs which is about 4$ for a box which is equivalent to about 100 eggs!
Tell your mom your beliefs and make a point, we dont just not like meat, we believe that animal cruelty is wrong!. I showed my mom a video of how they treat animals in China and a year later she is a pesco vegetarian (only eats fish)!.
I hope this made sense and I hope this helps! xDWww@FoodAQ@Com

Honestly your Mom is right for worrying about your nutrition!. A vegan diet is not what nature intended!. See your pointy canine teeth, your forward facing eyes!? They are for hunting and tearing apart meat!. I am grossed out by meat but force myself to eat a little to stay healthy, and not eating dairy is not healthy!. Its very difficult to get proper nutrition!. If your mother's budget allows her enough extra to provide a well balanced vegan diet for you thats something you can negotiate with your mom!. But it would be very expensive and maybe impossible for her to provide propler nutrition in a vegan diet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

As you may already know, there are a lot of vegan meat replacements out there already!. I am vegetarian who wants to become a vegan in the near future as well!. You could keep a chart on what vitamins!.nutrients you need and check them off!. Make meal plans for each day of the week!.

Here are some ways to replace dairy in your diet:

MILK: Drink fortified soymilk, rice milk or almond milk in place of cow's milk!.

BUTTER: When sauteing, use olive oil, water, vegetable broth, wine or fat-free cooking spray instead of butter!. In baked goods, use canola oil!.
Cheese!. Use soy cheese or nutritional yeast flakes, which are available in health food stores!.

EGGS: In baked goods, try commercial egg replacers — a dry product made mostly of potato starch!. Or you can use the following to replace one egg: 1/4 cup whipped tofu or 1 tablespoon milled flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons of water!. For an egg-free omelet use tofu instead of eggs!.

Here are some ways to ensure you get proper nutrition as vegan:

PROTEIN: Your body needs protein to maintain healthy skin, bones, muscles and organs!. Vegetarians who eat eggs or dairy products have convenient sources of protein!. Other sources of protein include soy products, meat substitutes, legumes, lentils, nuts, seeds and whole grains!.

CALCIUM: This mineral helps build and maintain strong teeth and bones!. Low-fat dairy foods and dark green vegetables, such as spinach, turnip and collard greens, kale, and broccoli, are good sources of calcium!. Tofu enriched with calcium and fortified soy milk and fruit juices are other options!.

VITAMIN B-12: Your body needs vitamin B-12 to produce red blood cells and prevent anemia!. This vitamin is found almost exclusively in animal products, including milk, eggs and cheese!. Vegans can get vitamin B-12 from some enriched cereals, fortified soy products or by taking a supplement that contains this vitamin!.

IRON: Like vitamin B-12, iron is a crucial component of red blood cells!. Dried beans and peas, lentils, enriched cereals, whole-grain products, dark leafy green vegetables, and dried fruit are good sources of iron!. To help your body absorb nonanimal sources of iron, eat foods rich in vitamin C — such as strawberries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, cabbage and broccoli — at the same time you consume iron-containing foods!.

ZINC: This mineral is an essential component of many enzymes and plays a role in cell division and in the formation of proteins!. Good sources of zinc include whole grains, soy products, nuts and wheat germ!.

here's a vegetarian food pyramid!. it has egg whites in it, just cut those out!.

If that still isn't enough to convince your mom, call your pediatrician/doctor!. Ask them if it is okay if you're on a vegan diet!. They'll most likely say yes!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Nobody's trying to "convert" you but everyone has the right to express their opinion, so don't ask a question like this in a public forum if you can't handle the controversy!.
It's a popular thing to be vegan right now!. Everybody does it because it's "cool"!. If you are doing it based on your own opinion I can respect that but if you are just following the crowd, fuggedaboudit!.
How is meat any more disgusting than plants that are grown in dirt, covered in pesticides, walked on by bugs, harvested by people who often don't wash their hands, and can give you food poisoning just as easy as any red beef!. I've tried soy milk and IMO there is nothing nastier in the world!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I suggest you grow the vegetables!

Below are two books I recommend!. Either are good choices and cost less than $20 each!
http://www!.amazon!.com/All-New-Square-Foo!.!.!.

Here is a way for you to make some money at 14:
http://www!.amazon!.com/CA-H-Square-Foot-G!.!.!.

also, try a site like localharvest!.org for a possibly cheaper source of vegetables!. This site can also be your portal to sell your vegetables!. Listings are free!.
What turns you away from meat!? Is it the treatment of the animals!? If so, the above site can be a good source for humane treatment of livestock!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why the hell would someone want to stop eating meat!? Or dairy!? I love taking the muscles of a slaughtered defenseless animal, grinding them up, subjecting them to heat and flames, then cramming them into a gnashing hole in my face and having my way with it!. And after that, I want to wash it down with some of the nutrients that come from the lactating fat glands of that SAME ANIMAL that was made to nurture her youth, but was instead stolen for me! Everybody wins! Delicious!Www@FoodAQ@Com

WHY do you want to be vegan!? You're too young to know what you really need for a nutritious diet, especially when your body is still developing!. You should discuss this with your doctor to find out what he/she thinksWww@FoodAQ@Com

Eat whatever she puts on the table!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Don't be a veganWww@FoodAQ@Com

i just want to ask why do u want to be veganWww@FoodAQ@Com

uhh, i doubt she will believe youWww@FoodAQ@Com
