Is fish vegetarian? My mom says it is.?!
Answers:
Oddly, I've actually heard this claim based on a bit of misinformation!. I'm not sure where it started, but the vegetarian in question said that fish were alright because "fish only have one major nerve, so they don't feel pain and it's okay to eat them"!.
Obviously this is utter bollocks to anyone with even a rudimentary knowledge of biology or comparative anatomy!. Fish are vertebrates with the requisite complex nervous system that is indeed VERY capable of registering pain (which is, at its core, an overstimulation of regular sensory neurons)!.
I'm not sure if that's got anything to do with your mother's claim, but it's something i've heard kicked around a bit in vegetarian circles!. Otherwise it looks like the other posters are correct, someone who is otherwise a vegetarian but also eats fish is known as a pescatarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Depends on how you look at it!. My opinion is your not!.
Semi-vegetarian: Someone who’s cutting back on his or her intake of meat, in general!. A pollo vegetarian avoids red meat and fish but eats chicken!. A pesco pollo vegetarian avoids red meat but eats chicken and fish!.
These terms stretch the true definition of a vegetarian, and only the term semi-vegetarian is actually used with much frequency!.
Lacto ovo vegetarian: A lacto ovo vegetarian diet excludes meat, fish, and poultry but includes dairy products and eggs!. Most vegetarians in the U!.S!., Canada, and Western Europe fall into this category!. Lacto ovo vegetarians eat such foods as cheese, ice cream, yogurt, milk, and eggs, as well as foods made with these ingredients!.
Lacto vegetarian: A lacto vegetarian diet excludes meat, fish, and poultry, as well as eggs and any foods containing eggs!. A lacto vegetarian would, however, eat dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese!.
Vegan: Technically, the term vegan refers to more than just the diet alone!. A vegan is a vegetarian who avoids eating or using all animal products, including meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, any foods containing by-products of these ingredients, wool, silk, leather, and any nonfood items made with animal byproducts!. Some vegans avoid honey!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

forget the definitions
you need to know WHY you are vegetarian
Is it because your mom says so!? then do whatever she says!.
Or are you a vegetarian for health concerns!? then aska doctor whether you should eat fish
But if you are a vegetarian because (and you should be) you think it is the morally right and ethically unselfish thing to do, then it is quite OBVIOUS that fish is not vegetarian
The people who claim to be veg but eat fish are misguided
They don't know why they're veg, they're trying to have the best of both worlds
They're just fooling themselves
see, you don't eat something or not because you call yourself something and then check up if something fits into that definition
you should know the motives that direct your choices and then make an individual choice for each different thing, and based on these choices classify yourself into a suitable definition
and to Ashley who talks about vegetarians thinking they're better than pescetarians, mate, we aren't in a competition hereWww@FoodAQ@Com

The ones who say it is are just the ones who are trying to be in the trend of vegetarianism, but refuse to actually commit to it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
