Vegans and fellow vegetarians, how do you feel about being told "you can just pick the pieces of meat out"?!

Question: Vegans and fellow vegetarians, how do you feel about being told "you can just pick the pieces of meat out"!?
I find that I'm getting annoyed by that!.!.!.it's hard to enjoy your food if you have to constantly scrutinize it!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I hate to tell you A A if you just picking the pieces out doesn't mean the animal didn't die!. You not eating it doesn't mean the animal didn't die either!.

I am not a vegetarian but to me this expression is the same as saying sorry I dropped your food on the floor but it is ok I picked the hair and dog toenails out of it!. If it is offensive it is offensive even if it is scooped out!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm pretty used to hearing that since I have been vegetarian since I was about 10, and my family were big meat-eaters!. I had to learn to be really independent about feeding myself!. I started cooking for myself and learned that I couldn't ever depend on anyone else to provide vegetarian food for me!. I think that people honestly don't understand that we don't "pick the meat out!." They don't mean to be insensitive about it!. My husband's grandmother, is the sweetest lady I have ever met, and the first time I met her she was making a "vegetarian" soup with a beef broth, and some other dish that had chunks of meat in it, and she honestly thought I could pick the meat out and it would be fine!. I was going to just not eat anything and not complain, but my husband explained it to her and she hurried and whipped up something that I could eat, after confirming that all the ingredients were vegetarian!. It's just that some people don't have experience being around vegetarians and so they don't understand how we work, it's not that they mean to be cruel!. Now if they are intentionally insensitive and ignorant, that is indeed annoying!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegetarian and Vegan diets are still very rare in most places!. If you have any dietary restrictions, it is up to you to inform your host of it well in advance, not doing so is rude, and expecting them to cater to you!. It is a good Idea when you do tell them to offer to bring something, that way you know something you can eat will be available!.
It is not the hosts responsibility to tell guests what they will be serving in advance, the menu may not always be set when invitations are made!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I just nod my head and don't eat, but not make it obvious!.

Then people will still prod me to eat!. And keep doing it!. And keep doing it!. And keep doing it!.

And then in a quick voice I will say 'It's okay, I'm vegetarian!.'

First, I'll hear, "Well pick the meat off, genius!"

But usually the host or whoever ordered or made the food will end up feeling really guilty and then ask me why I didn't tell them!.

Personally, I'm not the type of person who would go "And by the way, I'm vegatarian!." I know it's not exactly rude, but what I usually do instead, is just ask about what they're planning on having!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I get annoyed by it too!. And if the meat was cooked with the food, some of the flavor still remains, and that just ruins it for me!. If I have the option, I just pass!. Being a vegetarian for me isn't just refusing to eat meat, it's a boycott of animals dying (among other reasons), and "just picking the pieces out" doesn't exactly mean that animal didn't die!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That is annoying, and I do believe that it's common courtesy to inform someone that the dish is going to have meat in it!. However, it is our choice to not eat meat and as a minority, we're going to have to suffer a bit!.
Maybe you should start asking what's going to be served beforehand to make sure it doesn't have meat in it and if it does just bring your own dish :) That might work better than depending on others to remember your dietWww@FoodAQ@Com

im used to it, but still annoys me sometimes!. but my family will make sure to make me something meatless or tell me beforehand that they put meat in something so that i can take care of myself before going over their house to eat!.&& most of my friends are vegetarian as well so i dont run into that problem so much with them, just ppl i dont know and ppl in my family who, after 4 years, still assume its a "phase"!. i wanna save the animals by not eating them!. "Well its just a phase"!. i dont phase anymore, that was when i was like, 8!. im 11 yrs older now and they still dont take me being vegetarian seriously!., well some dont!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That question totally annoys me! Finally someone who understands!

First of all, when you "pick the meat out", you usually miss little pieces!. Secondly, I wouldn't enjoy knowing that my food had meat touching it and lastly, meat juices are absorbed in the food and those don't leave when you pick the meat out!. So there ya go! Happy Veganing!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I can never just pick the meat out!.!. It grosses me out just as much as actually eating it would!.!. Just the fact that it was on my food or cooked with my food is enough for me to say no thank you!.!. I guess it's just your own personal choice, but you should never feel bad for saying no to something that you just don't believe in!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That would really annoy me as the meat was still cooked with the other food!. I would happily bring my own food with me though!. The other annoying thing for me is when i find that the so called "vegetarian" option contains fish when i go out with my friends because then i feel bad about ruining their meal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If someone would tell me that I would tell them 'No thanks!"

That would be way too gross to me so I would eat any other dishes that would be available!.

You do have to scrutinize your food and read all the labels and so forth and that can be a pain but at least you know what you're eating then!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I ust dont eat it!.!.!.!.!. its like the meat is touching it gets stirred around in it!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!. ugh it is just so messed up!!!!!!!!!!!!! If im vegetarain its not like i am going to eat around meat no way!!!!!! i hate when that happens and ya like what u said about the potluck that is just messed up!!!!! maybe he usually used to meats for u only used one changed his recipe or sumthing which cud be nice in that case but i mean really if u dont eat one meat u wont eat another!!!!! unless of course ur one of those people who eats like fish and chicken( chickens are tortured terribly) or my friend considers her self veggish ust bcuz she eats cow( they are the worst lol partly im partly vegan) and chickens errr people likke that innoy me~!!!!! good job be vegg dont pick ur meat out and lol MEAT= MURDER tofu = peace!!!!! :):)Www@FoodAQ@Com

yes its really annoying!. when i was in greece a waiter offered me spaghetti carbonara!. its just got little pieces of ham in it he said!. so thats ok then!? !. i went elsewhere and had a wonderful veggie mousaka!. i try to ignore the silly comments!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, some vegetarians don't mind picking the meat out and eating it, depending on how big the pieces of meat are!. I don't see a problem with someone suggesting it!. You can always refuse!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

By far one of the most irritating comments!. I don't know if anyone's noticed, but the last time I checked, when meat is cooked into something, there's pretty much no way of escaping all the meat juices, grease, blood and fat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would leave and never go back to a restaurant that told me that!. I always bring a dish when invited, so I have a backup if there is no food that I can eat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I feel like a meat eater would if i told them you can just pick the cow poop out of it and then it will be okay!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Ask them if they had human flesh in their food would they be happy to pick it out and still eat it!.

Most would say no I bet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If i have to take apart every piece of food to eat it, I won't enjoy it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

just say back "yeah, like the time i got poo in my food and picked around it!."Www@FoodAQ@Com

I know!. I walk in the kitchen to make a sandwich, and my mom's like "oh, your dad made Sinigang (you take a pot of water with raw chicken and boil it and then add everything else to make this Filipino dish), you can have some, you can just pick the meat out and it'll be vegetarian!." I felt like ripping my own brains apart!.!.!. The flavor of the soup was practically based on the meat!.!.!.

But, anyway, I told her that, laughed, said, "yeah, right," and made my sandwich!. ^^

She was still, like, "nooo, you can just pick the meat out," but I didn't say anything more!.!.!.

She's not like that now, lol!. If someone makes something I can't eat (because I'm vegan, etc!.!.!.), I just don't eat it!. But sometimes, I find it a little insulting when they know I'm veg and they want me to "pick the meat out" or they offer me meat, etc!.!.!. because they don't realize how committed I am to choosing this diet, and it shows a lack of respect for my choice and/or way of life!.

Additionally, I noticed this whole "cater to them" bit, which gets on my nerves!. I could just as easily and logically say, "Why must I cater to YOU and give in to YOUR meat-eating diet!? Just because your the majority, doesn't mean everyone should be required to give in, consume meat, and stop living the way they want to!. It doesn't mean that anyone who doesn't eat meat does not deserve respect!." People like that sound like Hitlers!.!.!. It's like saying, "well, the atheists, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, etc!.!.!. in this country should just go to our Christian churches and eat meat and freedom fries because we're not going to 'cater to them' by letting them have freedom of religion or let them live they way they want to; they should just give in to majority, give in to our 'fast food nation!.'"

But, importantly (and fortunately), not all people who consume meat are like this!. Thankfully, a lot of them do respect vegetarians' dietary choices and lifestyles, just as I respect their free ability and right to choose!. :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

if its people that i dont know verry well or maybe they didnt know i was a vegetarian i dont mind it, i would still think its a little rude, i mean like you said they could atleast offer me some bread but i ussually dont have this problem because when this happens to me people allways feel bad there like oh im so sry i didnt know and i wish would have known this

but if its somebody who knows me well and knows that im a vegetarian and they INVITE me for dinner and then tell me to pick out the meat it makes me a little aggitated
they should not have invited me in the first place if they already knew this
( =Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you are Vegan I dont think you should expect people to cater to you all the time!. Cook your own food if it is a problem!. Its not the rest of the world's fault that you have an extreme diet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

wouldn't that be easier than eating the meat!? I would think that is a downfall to being a vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
