What do vegans think about having reptiles as pets?!

Question: What do vegans think about having reptiles as pets!?
Hello!

I am looking into the vegan lifestyle and started thinking, being that you and me as well, are against animals in cages and such (zoos, pet stores etc!.), what do you think about reptiles as pets!. I currently share my home with 2 ball pythons and 2 tree frogs!. They both are carnivorous and require me to feed them live food!. Now me personally, I don't think its wrong because this is what they eat normally, but I can see how people having animals in enclosures is wrong, but these are captive bred reptiles!. They can't just be released into the wild!. I take VERY good care of my animals, and are stress free!. I also believe that certain animals can live a very happy life in the RIGHT enclosure!. I DO NOT think its right for uneducated people to be able to walk out with animals especially when the pet store employee's know that the person can't properly care for the animal!. Caring for animals is something that should be taken very seriously, whether reptile or mammal!. As long as their needs are met, and I mean really met, I don't think its wrong!.!.!.!.I am most likely going to switch over to the diet and keep on taking care of my animals and further educating people about them regardless, just wondering what you all think!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would disagree that veganism is all that black and white!. To me, being vegan means doing all you can to avoid putting animals through unnecessary suffering and death through ethical decisions in diet and other purchases!. Part of that means avoiding meat, eggs, dairy, leather, and other items directly (and to some extent, indirectly, although that's not always possible) linked to killing or abusing animals!.

But there are a lot of gray areas!. Pets are one!. I think there are a lot of animals that benefit from and enjoy relationships with humans and I see nothing wrong with keeping pets (or "companion animals" as the hyper-pc vegan crowd sometimes calls them) as long as they're animals that make good pets and as long as you treat them well!. What else are you going to do with your reptiles anyway!? If you give them away, it's still the same net effect--they would still be living in cages eating other animals and might be worse off depending on the owner!. And as you say, they are probably not prepared to live in the wild (and might not survive the winter, depending on where you live)!. Not to mention the potential ecological nightmare of introducing pythons and tree frogs into a forest where they are not indigenous, especially if they're male-female pairs!.!.!.

I would maybe vote for a Humane Society rescue next time!.!.!.

I would not let something like keeping reptiles around and feeding them bugs stop you from identifying yourself as a vegan!. I don't think it's hypocritical, as you're sincerely doing a lot more than most to try and reduce animal suffering!. Anyone who would be petty enough to harp on you is missing the point!. If everyone did just a little bit, it would go a long way!. Besides, it'd get awfully tedious to constantly explain that, "OK, well, I'm not quite a vegan because I have reptiles and feed them bugs, and I still own a couple pairs of leather shoes, but I don't eat meat or dairy or eggs or any other animal products!."Www@FoodAQ@Com

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with owning pets, but the term "vegan" is not opinion based!. It is black and white, and vegans cannot own pets!. People own pets to fill some sort of emotional need and that would be exploitation of said animal!. Just one of the many, many inherent hypocrisies with being vegan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am a vegan from birth 0+ years!. My parent were and I followed!. I dont think having pets is wrong and you cannot feed a reptile milk or vegetables!. They eat what they have to!. Personally, I dont like having pets but I donate money to humanbeings who are in need!. I dont hate animals and infact I work with animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That is kinda neurotic!. I am a Vegan and all my friends are too!. We all have different types of pets!. Reptiles included and never have I had a conversation re this!. I'm also a peta supporter!. Sorta!. They actually have gone hate mongers!. I'm sure they have a stance on it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

vegan is a diet!.!.just dont taxidermy the pets and its all good!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

vegans just cant have pets!. it doesnt really matter what you think about it!.!. do what you want manWww@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not a vegan, but most vegans I know don't have objections to this!. If the animal is naturally a carnivore, they're a carnivore!. There are animals that need to be fed live food since they are attracted to movement in order to hunt!.!.!.many reptiles and amphibians are this way!.

I know that there are vegans who have cats as pets; cats are also carnivorous and can become very sick if they are fed a veg/vegan diet!. Reptiles and amphibians can be the same way!. This is what would happen in nature, so I don't see that there's anything wrong with it!.

JMHO!

Edit!.!.!.no, owning a pet is not against a vegan lifestyle!. You're not "exploiting" your pet, you're caring for it!. And honestly, responsibly owning reptiles is something that not a whole lot of people know how to do!.

If you were raising your reptiles in order to turn them into boots and belts, you'd be exploiting them!. Both animals and humans require emotional and social attachment, and it's perfectly fine to own a pet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You can do what you want!. As long as you take good care of your pet, love it and provide for it- there is nothing wrong with having it!.
Vegan or not- it is irrelevant!.
Vegan is a lifestyle that YOU choose, so you can make your own decisions on how to live YOUR life!.
As far as having pets is concerned- I feel like that it is VERY "vegan" to do so!.
Veganism is all about saving animals and being morally correct!.
Your befriending an animal!. Saving it from an otherwise difficult life!.
It may urn to be in the wild- but the reality is that it would live longer in your care most likely!.
Reptile or otherwise- I think that your doing a good thing!.
Vegan is a lifestyle!.
Don't forget that it is YOUR life!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think you should keep taking care of them because if you give them up, what will they do!?!? Besides, it seems like you take good care of them!. I do believe in adopting cats and dogs from the pound because they're going to be killed anyway if they're not adopted because the shelter needs more room for new strays!. And if you adopt one from there, you're not supporting the puppy mills which are just disgusting!. I don't really believe in havin g rodents as pets because I don't like how they are kept in a cage all the time!. Animals need to be out!. Cats and dogs don't need to be in cages like rodents!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I actually put a lot of thought into this subject and made a video out of it!.
Ashley is a troll who in some posts pretends to be vegan and in others bashes it!. Just ignore her!.
Anyway, I own reptiles to, all captive bred!. When I grow up I plan to only have rescued animals, but I do plan to own animals!.!.!.because i love them!!
http://www!.youtube!.com/watch!?v=wP7KNTqe2!.!.!.
also, about owning animals kept in cages,
Rodents do not have to be in cages, well technically they do!. The small cages from the petstores are usually not good for them, I have seen people set up multi level(My pigs live in a 2 story cage) cages and all this cool stuff!
http://www!.guineapigcages!.com/photos/sho!.!.!.
Those pigs must be happy!. :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Ummm!.!. u contradicted urself!. If u truly don't think animals should live n cages, then u shouldn't keep ur snakes n frogs!. Personally, I don't have a problem w/enclosed animals, as long as they get proper care and attention!. I'm glad u want to educate ppl on reptilian care!. Maybe u can educate the owners of my apt complex b/c they don't even allow reptiles!Www@FoodAQ@Com
