What should I buy with $15 at the grocery store for a vegetarian diet?!

Question: What should I buy with $15 at the grocery store for a vegetarian diet!?
Today is my first day of my goal of lasting at least one week as a vegetarian!. If I can make one week, I'll go for two, and so on and so forth!.

I'm not overweight or obese!. I'm actually sort of underweight for my height!. I'm 6'5" and only 205 pounds!. I used to be the same height in high school and only 160 pounds because I was a runner!. I looked like a skeleton!. I've gained some belly fat because of a medication I had to be on for about 8 months that increased my appetite!. I'll be exercising while trying the vegetarian lifestyle!. I want to lose this gut and these love handles by the summer if possible!. I don't want to go on any supplements like Hydroxycut or any of those!. Besides, I couldn't afford them anyway!.

Anyway, I'd like to go to the grocery store tonight or tomorrow morning and buy $15 worth of vegetarian foods!. My mom does buy food for my sister and I, but if the vegetarian lifestyle is more expensive, I don't think she'll be able to swing it with her income!.

I figured I'd get a bunch of canned vegetables, especially beans, since they are cheap, despite the preservatives and salt contents, which I hate, but I know that buying foods fresh is a lot more expensive!. Besides, whatever I buy will probably last me a while since I usually only eat one full meal per day (nighttime)!. It's not cuz my mom can't afford us to eat three meals per day!. It's cuz I have poor eating habits and I don't feel like eating nor am I used to eating three square meals a day!.

I do know that eating 5 small portions per day is better than three square meals!. I realize that my eating only once per day only slows my metabolism down and is keeping this fat where it is!.

So, what are suggestions on what to get with $15 or $20 at the grocery store (not a health food store since the closest one is really far away)!.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Tinned vegetables work out more expensive - as usually about half the can is water/brine - leaving you about 200-250 grams of food per can!. also the necessary steps to preserve can foods - high temperature cooking + additives can also mean the food is less nutritious than the fresher equivalent!.

Consider dried lentils, pulse & beans (sometimes "soup" mixes can be cheap) as like rice and pastas these are usually the cheapest & best sources of these foods!. Be warned: you'll usually need to soak them in advance of cooking them though!.

Fresh veges can often be the cheapest if you look around - usually in the form of specials which occur when the particular item is in season and is overly abundant -

For example: This week I've been glutting on "Grape" tomatoes (which are usually expensive) as my local grocery store seems to have acquired an excess amount and are selling them very cheaply!.

Other food bargains can be found in major supermarket specials ( look out especially for "loss leaders" - http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Loss_leader ) and reduced items / food on sale as it is nearing the end of it's "shelf life" (such foods are still perfectly edible - otherwise it can't be sold at all)!.

It's a matter of knowing where to look - one can eat very well for a few dollars if your not too fussy and are prepared to shop around!. And, try to keep track of how much the actual food is per pound or kilogram (consider waste too eg!. corn has inedible corn cob, can has a lot of water) as otherwise you can think your getting a bargain when you re really being ripped off!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

bread
popcorn
peanut butter
jelly
bananas
frozen veggies (some off brands are a better value)
pasta
spaghetti sauce
dried beans
oatmeal
rice

I'm not saying this is a well balanced diet or anything but it should get you through the week!Www@FoodAQ@Com

A few packets of dried legumes (lentils, kidney beans, lima beans, etc!.) - it'll work out cheaper and last longer than the canned variety!.
A large bag of rice (brown, if possible)!.
A large box of generic whole-wheat cereal (whatever is similar in your neck of the woods to Wheatbix, Vitabrits, etc!.)
A few cans of generic whole peeled tomatoes!.
Whatever fresh fruit and vegetables that are really cheap at the moment (if they're more than a certain price per kg, I usually don't buy them unless I specifically need them for a recipe)!.
A few cans of baked beans!.
Some whole-wheat or rye or mixed-grain bread!.
A yeast extract spread!.
Peanut butter (preferably sugar-free, low-salt, and if you can find that in a generic brand, all the better)!.

Happy shopping!Www@FoodAQ@Com
