I think there is a classy and polite way of ordering something to your specifications!. I think the best way to go about it is to kindly explain to your server that you do not eat meat and animal products!. From there you can ask which items they recommend, and if there are any items that can be modified to suit your needs!. I don't think it's imposing- you're the paying guest, so they should be more than willing to accommodate you!. Just try not to OVER-MODIFY a specific course!. That can be more prone to mistakes, and the cook(s) may become annoyed!. It's best to order ala carte or a different item all together!. If you feel like going outside your norm, and actually having animal products- that is really your prerogative, and no one has the right to judge you!.
I'm vegetarian, but I have a friend who is pescatarian!. She used to be ovo lacto vegetarian, until her and her husband moved to Japan!. She evolved into a pescatarian after being surrounded by seafood for several months!. I don't judge her for it!. It was her choice!. But at the same time, she can't logically call herself a vegetarian!. I can't stand it when ppl say they are vegetarian- and they eat seafood!. LOLWww@FoodAQ@Com

Japanese cuisine is vegetarian friendly so it would not be hard to get a vegetarian meal especially of your hosts are informed beforehand!. However, don't be offended if there are "hidden" meat ingredients in your meal to time because their understanding of what constitutes "vegetarian" may be different from yours!. The best way is to discretely let your hosts know of your limitations so they can make arrangements ahead of time!. I mean, if you were a diabetic, it would not be impolite to tell them that you cannot eat or must avoid sugary foods!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Japanese people in general are very respectful, so if you ask for no animal products in your food I'm sure they will take it into account!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
