Should meat be banned in schools?!

Question: Should meat be banned in schools!?
I say absolutely not!. But, if the budget permits, I think that schools should make one of the entrees (I think most schools offer 2) vegetatian friendly!. And milk, I think that soy milk should be offered!. Not only for vegetarians, but for kids who are lactose-intolerant!. And for the vegetarians who say that the meat is offensive to you, couldn't one also say that banning meat is just as offensive to people who eat meat!?
I'd love to hear answers from both sides :)
I'm a vegetarian by the way!. I just bring my lunch since my school doesn't offer alternatives to meat yet!. It doesn't bother me, I chose this lifestyle!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The school in my town only has 220 students!. That's kindergarten through high school!. The cafeteria staff is 2 people!. It would not be cost effective to offer more than 1 entree!. A second entree would mean hiring one more person to feed the same number of students!. Meat should not be banned because vegetarians are a small minority of students!. There is one Indian family with kids in the school!. I don't think beef should be banned to accommodate them!. People who choose diets that are different from the mainstream need to accept the extra effort to stick to those diets!. That can mean bringing your own lunch to school on the days when the menu doesn't fit your diet!.

Our school lunch lady is sensitive to the fact that some students are vegetarian!. One or 2 days a week the school lunch is vegetarian!. Other days it might be kosher!. She tries to make sure not to leave anyone out but you can't please everyone every day!. I have heard very few complaints about her menus!. The kids in my town are lucky!. Their school lunch program is run by a chef who has many years of experience in expensive restaurants!. Our children eat tasty, healthy foods 5 days a week!. They also get a lot of variety that is not usually associated with school lunch!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I dont think it should be banned, if people choose to eat that stuff, thats them, aswell as us veges, if we choose not to eat meat, yes there should be vegeterian options!. They arent hard to make, like salads, or pasta dishes, or even vegeterian hash browns or something!. I do think they should have a soy milk option for vegans and lactose intolerent people, because if your lactose intolerent and you drink cow milk you can faint!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!.!.!.they have TWO veggie burgers at my high school every other day or so(Vegetarian here as well!.!.)!. Only TWO!. There are thousands of kids at my school, and they decided to only provide two!. I mean, everything else is smothered with meat or traces of animal carcass!. Seriously!? Erm, and I'm lactose-intolerant as well, and my school cafeteria only provides milk!. They have three different types of milk too!.!.!.!.but no water!. I have to pay for water, except for that I can't afford water!.!.!.!. I guess there is always a water fountain around, right!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

"But, if the budget permits, I think that schools should make one of the entrees (I think most schools offer 2) vegetatian friendly!."

I don't understand!.!.!.!.vegetarian food is often cheaper than meat!. also, if it's not junk food like pizza, it would also be healthier than the junk they usually serve!. also, it's not as if meat eaters need meat at every meal; it wouldn't kill them (and it would save some animals) to eat less!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No I don't think that meat should be banned, at the same time, I don't think the vegetarian lifestyle should be banned either!. I agree fully, why not have the best of both worlds available!. In order to be correct both lifestyles should be supported if possible!. Why not offer a vegan salad bar for everyone to choose from!?

By the way, I have come across several Vegan recipe books that I thought were very interesting!. You should check out:

No, I don't and why would one of the entrees need to be vegetarian!? Entree is just a word!. If I had spinach lasagna with a meat entree it would be a side dish!. If I didn't have the meat entree, the lasagna would be the entree!. So what's the difference what you call it!?

One thing for certain is that budgets will never permit the accommodation of minority diets in schools!. Besides vegetarian they'd have to cater to kosher, gluten-free, diabetic, no sodium, halal etc!.!.!.!.!.and it's just not economically feasible!. Heck, restaurants can't even afford to do that!Www@FoodAQ@Com

What would be so horrible with providing healther, meat free alternatives!? Vegetarian or not, everyone could use less of it!. I looked in the paper this morning, and every school in town only has meat entrees, save french toast on friday from one school far away!. It's not just to provide for a different type of diet, its for the good of everyone!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

They should offer at least a salad!. which isn't the best but I think they have to!.
I found out after 6 years of being vegetarian, my senior year, that my school offered hummus wraps!

Soo sooo delicious, when I make hummus wraps, or just eat plain hummus, its never the same, which is surprising how great school lunch was for me!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I agree with you!. Vegetarian foods and a soy milk or other non-milk beverage should be provided in schools!. If meat got banned it would cause a lot of problems and complaints by the people who still think you have to eat meat all the time!. Maybe in the distant future!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm from Australia and almost everyone brings there own lunch to school!. Banning meat is ridiculous, it would be the same as banning all foods that people are allergic to!. It would be more inclusive to ensure that there is a vegetarian option provided everyday!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, there should be a vegetarian option other than wilted lettuce tho!

Barrie O!.
Can you name ONE thing that you can not get from a vegetarian or vegan diet!?
Wait, I challenge ANYONE answering this question to give me ONE thing you can not find in a vegan or vegetarian diet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My school always offered vegetarian meals at lunch along with the standard fare!. This was in the late 1970;s so I would have to say your school department is 30 years behind the curve!. I would be interested in knowing what they are teaching you!Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, but I think all schools should offer vegan options!. I'm not talking fake meat or tempeh or tofu, but at the very least a salad or pasta!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

not banned, but there should be vegan optionsWww@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!. I do think that schools should offer vegetarian friendly dishes!. And I agree with you that meat should not be banned!. I think that as a whole, our society has become so concerned with being conscientious of the rights of a few (not saying that vegetarians are a small number and should be ignored and not limiting this to just this subject material) that they are trampling on the rights of the majority!. And face it, there are probably more meat eaters than vegetarians!. So that said, schools should offer just as many meat free dishes as they do meat dishes!. And it wouldn't take much effort, just leave the meat out of a particular dish and offer meat free and meat versions!. They wouldn't have to make completely separate dishes!. also, most of their dishes are ordered pre made and they just bake them!. It would do for the schools to survey the kids and staff to see how many vegetarians there are and how many would eat in the cafeteria if they offered vegetarian dishes!. Then plan ahead and order smaller containers of said dish or fix smaller amounts!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It would really be helpful if the lunch staff actually knew what was in the food!. Many days my friends drag me the the greasy cafeteria and the lunch ladies glare at me when I try to ask what goes into the suspicious-looking hash browns!. That would really be helpful not only to vegans and vegetarians, but also Muslims and Jews who are strict about their diet!. My school has a majority of Asians and West Asians [predominantly Muslim, many of whom purchase from the cafeteria regularly, their only options are plain old fries and drinks]!.

By the way, soy milk costs a lot less than having the cow digest the soy and produce milk!. My opinion in that soy milk tastes a bazillion times better than cow's milk, because I was raised drinking soy milk like many other Asians!. I'm sure the majority of the world, the 80% of lactose-intolerant adults would agree!. But if all you care about is cost-effectiveness, I suggest you fill up your tummy with scrumptious vaseline!. Yum!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My opinion is that everyone chooses different dietary choices just like people choose religious, political, or sexual choices!.

Teenagers who are offended by these choices need to learn to respect other people's decisions!. Throughout life, you will meet people who are different from you!. Respect is very hard to learn!. Obviously, a lot of adults don't know how to do it, either!.

No, meat should not be banned and there should be vegetarian choices offered!.

I am a cook at a large University!. We offer vegetarian choices daily!. It really irks me because one of our three deep fryers in the kitchen is supposed to be vegetarian!. Meat is never supposed to go into the oil!.

However, some of the older women who work there think its OK just to filter the oil and it will be OK for vegetarians to eat food fried in that fryer, even though meat was cooked in that oil!.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I respect other people's dietary choices!. I think its wrong that the other cooks do not respect this!. They tell me the vegetarians will never know and what they don't know won't hurt them!. These cooks are also breaking the policy in the University's Food Service Department!.

I've told the managers but they won't do anything about it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

At my high school there weren't always vegetarian options!.
most of the food was pretty unhealthy too, mostly packaged foods and salad that swam in its own dressing!. gross!

i'm studying nutrition now, and i'd like to work for food services at a school!. healthy diets start when you're young, so a school not providing proper foods is really disapointing!.

i'm vegetarian, and lactose intolerant!. and when i was in school our lunch was so early (10AM) that i wasn't even hungry!. so normally i'd pack snacks to eat through out the day!. but on the days i ate lunch it was really disgusting!.

i don't know who is in charge of food at my university but the food choices are really great here!. there are lots tasty options :D even if they are the same options everyday :/

vegan4life!. i hate to bust your bubble but you actually can't get B12 naturally except from animal products!. it can be synthesized to take as a supplement though!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't know if it should be banned they just need more vegetarian choices i'm kind of germaphobic so I don't get the salad because people touch the tongs and then throw it right on top of the salad and the cafeteria people put on there rubber gloves that are still gross and the itched her head and touch the salad!. Then kids touch the pizza with their hands all the time, and people touch fruit and then put it back so I don't want to eat there germs it's gross!. I usually get pizza though!. I don't have time to get lunch in the morning!. Oh yeah I couldn't eat lunch once because hey had no salad and all the pizza had meat on it!. I had only a vitamin water and some french fries from a friend!.

A$H!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think it would be awesome if meat were banned from schools!. Aside from my personal vegeterian agenda it makes sense for the health of our children!. I do support free-choice though, so I'm not about to start a campaign to have the meat thrown out!. What annoyed me the most about school and being vegetarian was that the veg options often weren't so veg due to lack of understanding and education from the staff!. I still remember the day they served quiche lorraine in the veg line!.!.!. complete with rennet and pig bits!.!.!. ugh!. I think a well thought out vegetarian option is the way to go!. The veg option could also be made dairy/gluten/nut-free and take care of most of the common dietary restrictions right off the top!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No and I do not think that, at my school at least, a vege alternative should be offered for the less than 1% veges!. There are sides and salads!. Bring your own!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Soy milk is such yuck!. Meat gives us important substances for the development of our brains which the vegetarian diet just cannot offer!.
No, I do not think that schools should offer vegetarian meals or soy milk for lactose intolerant children!. The cost of providing this for so few would have to be added to the meals of all others, and in an effort to keep prices friendly, it just is not a practical suggestion!. But you want to be vegetarian!. Your choice!. You are happy to bring your eats to school!. Good for you!. But I and all the other meat eaters know that it tastes like straw fodder!. I eat vegetables!. I like vegetables very much but I could not even imagine myself existing on them and only them!.
Now, let's leave well enough alone, shall we!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
