Maggie M obviously sees the distinction between now and necessity so why cant she say that exploitation began when when necessity faded!.
oh and maggie peta doesnt represent animal rights activists

As for your project good luck
I think it would be worhwhile to look at at how far back the concept of compassion for non-human animals began and its evolution philosophically as well as the actual events in history!. all way from Socrates to Rousseau to Singer
I put a good website down their for you that concentrates on western figuresWww@FoodAQ@Com

Since you are writing a paper, most websites will not be considered a valid source for factual information!. The only on-line resources that are considered valid are on-line research articles that are referenced back to the paper copy and government based websites (such as the USGS)!. Even the ASPCA websites are not considered valid because the group exists to support an agenda (even though a noble one) and therefore has some internal bias!.You should go to a library and get help from the reference section librarian!. Look for journal articles, books, etc!. to get data to support your paper!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A good book about keeping dogs and cats as pets even a long time ago is "Animal Shelter"
It talks about the horrible things that happen to dogs and cats before there where animal rights laws!
I found it in my school library, so I would check yours to!
also, the documentary earthlings(Can be rented from most movie stores) shows a lot about modern day animal abuse and exploitation!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There are so many ways animals are exploited and each way has a different history!. For example, the exploitation of animals in entertainment!. You could include the Romans gladiator games where exotic animals were stolen from their natural habitats and shipped thousands of miles to fight to their deaths!. Humane treatment to animals in movies wasn't always a law!. In the movies Benji and Milo & Otis, those animals were not protected by laws therefore they were forced to perform dangerous stunts!. also I can't forget to mention the circus!. Circus with animals have been a tradition for many years, they are still considered a family attraction!. These exotics live horrible miserable lives!. They are confined and their spirits are stomped & beaten!. They endure fear & pain & hatred - all so a family can laugh at them when they "perform"!.

There is also the exploitation of animals in the fur & leather industry!. These animals are subject to a whole different history & whole different set of abuses!. As are the animals in the food industry and the animals in the research industry and the animals in the breeding & selling industry and the animals in the hunting industry!.

You have a lot of work to do but you can write an awesome paper where you persuade others to act on behalf of the welfare of animals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

exploitation is such a broad term you would have to go back to the beginning of time to show when humans first began to exploit animals!.

You also have to keep in mind that had not your great great great great(you get the idea) grandfather not hunted or eaten meat his family may have very well died out!. Food did not used to be commercially available and believe it or not, people used to rely on meat even more than they do now!. I would even argue that as humans, it is in our nature to exploit!.

Founding of PETA - 1980

There ya go, that is when the exploitation started!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Animals are here for us to use because we are smart enough to do just that!.

TAZKATTOO Finally someone else agrees that most web sites have a built in bias!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Weel I guess you have to start with what you consider as "exploitation" then set a time frame from which to begin or define!. There are many descriptions of what constitutes "exploitation" and it started probably when that first caveman chased down rodent or a frog or whatever and ate it!.

Agree very much with what the treacehr said!. go to your library and ask for references!. The Internet is so full of unreliable "sources" that you are more likely to get wrong information than anything especially from very unreliable and misleading sites such as peta!.comWww@FoodAQ@Com

Check out Animals and Society Institute!.

"Since 1993 and in conjunction with the internationally recognized Brill Academic Publishers, ASI produces Society & Animals, a quarterly journal containing peer reviewed studies concerning nonhuman animals from psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science and other social sciences and history, literary criticism, and other disciplines of the humanities!."
