Question: Do veggie crumbles taste like real ground beef!?
I would like to try to get away from eating red meat!. but I say this with all respect to you guys who do not eat meat, I am not saying this disrespectfully, I love beef!. I want to try the veggie crumbles but I wonder how much they actually taste like meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Depends on the type you buy and how you season them!. Morning Star Farms are pretty tasty!. Defrost them and place them in a lightly-sprayed pan to finish heating them up!. Season as you would ground beef!. I particularly like these in casseroles (like pasta bakes) and tacos/burritos!.

Yves makes some good ones as well!. They hold up nicely in chili and spaghetti!. It's all about how you season them becuase they hold spices and sauces well!.

Gimme Lean makes some soy ground that actually comes in a roll (sort of like pork sausage)!. That one is good for meatballs!

I recommend you at least pan sauteeing them first!. That way, they get a little crispy on the outside and become more firm!.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!. My meat-eating family couldn't tell the difference once when I made baked ziti for them!.

Eaten by itself it will never taste like steak, but used in a recipe like a sauce, tacos, or gumbo it's just fine!. I also like soy chorizo and use it in my gumbo & tacos!.

For me the trick is to NOT think I'm eating fake meat, but to actually acknowledge I'm eating ____ fill in the blank with the truth!. Then I don't expect it to taste like something it doesn't!.

The fake you out meat alternatives are rather expensive and it can be consuming to find the ones you like the best, trial and error!. Don't give up if you don't like a certain brand at first!. If you find one you really like try to buy it on sale & stock up!. I always suggest trying to find a good vegetarian cookbook so you can make good veggie meals without the replacers!. I swear, that can be done!. (still an omnivore that eat a lot of veggie meal)Www@FoodAQ@Com

The texture is very similar for sure!. If you use it in a recipe with a sauce - like for taco meat or in a fake beef stroganoff or mac & chili casserole, you can't tell the difference!.

The crumbles are one of the few meat substitutes that really do taste like what they replace!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

if you put them in something with flavor (like chili), then you pretty much can't tell the difference!. i'm not sure about eating them by themselves though!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
