You may be wondering why Maggie M has made a bizarre and irrelevant reference to your dad!. It's because he's copied and pasted another person's answer to a different question - obviously without checking the text, and therefore presumably without checking the facts: http://answers!.yahoo!.com/question/index!?!.!.!.

Please don't be alarmed by the misinformation he's given!. The facts about soya and cancer are these:

Soya proteins contain isoflavones that can mimic a weak oestrogen effect!. It's not the same as the oestrogen your own body makes though - it is 1,000 times weaker than your own body's oestrogen, but it's this that has led to concerns (and rumour) about oestrogen dependent cancer and about adverse effects on men!.

There is no actual scientific evidence that soya causes, prevents, contributes to or affects the progress of any cancer, including oestrogen positive breast cancer, which is the one most often cited!. There are those in the field who argue that isoflavones may be of help in preventing breast cancer or be beneficial to women who have had breast cancer!.

There is current research into whether increasing phyto oestrogens in the diet helps to prevent breast or prostate cancer, and a study in 2002 found that women with the highest levels of soya products in their diets had the lowest breast density - higher breast density being associated with higher breast cancer risk!.

Women with the highest levels of isoflavones in their diet are reported to have significant risk reductions for uterine cancer!.

There are concerns about soya and certain thyroid conditions, but I don't have sufficient knowledge to comment on that - where I don't know, I don't comment!.

Soya milk in moderation is fine!. And yes, you can cook with it; use it as you would cows milkWww@FoodAQ@Com

It is without a doubt definitely better for you than dairy!. I drink it myself but, whether a lot of it is good for you in the long run, is still questionable!. I have read that it is and I have read that it isn't!. But, personally I think it's perfectly fine if you take it moderately, there are numerous benefits!. If you still feel unsure as to whether you should be taking soy milk I would advise you to try almond milk, which is very nice and once you get the right brand is creamy, or rice milk, although it's more carbs than protein, it's still good for you!.

Yes, you can cook with soy milk but, I would advise using soy cream if you want to thicken something or soy custard or soy yogurt!. If you are adding soy milk to tea, put the soy milk in first or let the tea cool a little before adding the soy milk!.

Good luck!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It has in benefits!. Its a food and just like any other food, it has nutrients but not everything that you need!. And like other foods,it also has to be taken in moderation!.

Just curious,if you are unsure if it is good for you or not, why did you start drinking it!? Because soy is a known allergen and can be harmful to some people!. That's why it is one of the ingredients (like nuts, wheat and dairy) that are always listed in bold letters!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, dairy milk is by far the best milk for you and here's why!.

Here are a couple of facts for you:
Myth: Soy estrogens (isoflavones) are good for you!.
Truth: Soy isoflavones are phyto-endocrine disrupters!. At dietary levels, they can prevent ovulation and stimulate the growth of cancer cells!. Eating as little as 30 grams (about 4 tablespoons) of soy per day can result in hypothyroidism with symptoms of lethargy, constipation, weight gain and fatigue!.

Myth: Soy foods are safe and beneficial for women to use in their postmenopausal years!.
Truth: Soy foods can stimulate the growth of estrogen-dependent tumors and cause thyroid problems!. Low thyroid function is associated with difficulties in menopause!.

Consumption of unfermented soy products is probably not such a good idea!. Unfermented soy contains high levels of a number of compounds that can: block the absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc; stunt growth; and alter hormone levels, disrupting menstruation, lowering testosterone, increasing the risk of breast cancer, and causing thyroid and prostate complications!. Unfermented soy includes things like soy milk, soy burgers, soy hot dogs, and tofu!.

Sorry!.!.!.!.sounds like your dad is correct!

if you are a vegan then it is definitely better for you!

you can use soy milk in any recipe replacing milk - it makes good custard, roux/white sauces, scones, pancakes, cakes etc

baked rice pudding is the only slightly odd thing - the pudding is lovely but the skin that forms on top looks like clingfilm!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, it's better for you than cow's milk!. It is weird that humans drink milk that is meant for a calf!.!.!.!.!.
I use soy milk when ever a recipe calls for regular milk and it always turns out fine! Just be careful of using something like vanilla flavor in certain dishes when plain would be better!. You could also try rice milk, almond milk, or hemp milk, all of which are delicious!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends on your goal!. If you're trying to lose fat, then soy milks a no no!. If you're looking for baby-like skin and energy, nothings better than soy milk!. It will also help with your hair, making it more rich!.
You could cook with it, like use it for frying eggs, but I guess that's the limit!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes you can cook with it if you don't mind the strong flavor, but too much soy can disrupt your hormone balance so consider other alternatives as well such as rice, oat, almond or hempmilk!.

Dairy milk can contain some nasty hormones and antibiotics!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, it is better for you, because it has no cholesterol!. also, the protein content of cow's milk is so high that it blocks the absorption of calcium!. And yes, you CAN cook with soymilk!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Better than what!? Cows milk definitely, but on its own i guess it's okay!. But yea, you can cook with it just like anything else!. There's some good casserole recipes that call for soymilk, as well as Thai!. You should give them a try!.
