Are animals killed for cheese?!
Like what is cheese made of!.!.!.!.!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
Cheese, as many people have pointed out, is made of milk!. You aren't stupid for asking the question, though, and shouldn't take into account what people are saying because animals are killed to make many kinds of cheese!. Many cheeses are fermented using rennet, which is a chemical from the lining of an animals stomach and can only be obtained from animals after they are killed and butchered!.
Many of the mainstream cheeses like cheddar and Jack in the grocery store are safe!. Many of the fancier cheeses are not!. Look at the ingredients - if it says rennet it killed an animal!. If it says 'enzymes' it may or may not contain rennet - you'll need to check with the company!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, animals are killed for cheese - in particular the calves that would normally drink the milk that's used to make the cheese!.
To produce milk cows have to have calves!. These calves would naturally suckle for a long time, but as people only want the milk (then cheese, butter, cream, etc!. etc!.) they take them away and kill them to get the maximum possible milk to sell!. The cows are most often killed a long time before they'd naturally die as well, as their milk yeald goes down and they're therefore no longer useful enough to the farmer!.
Some cheese contains rennet, which is the enzymes from calves' stomachs, so some is not vegetarian!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wow, so many dumb answers to such a simple question!
Clearly you are not the only one who does not know the answer to this so don't worry!
Some milk contain rennet, which is an animal product and is obtained by animal slaughter!. So yes, in this instance animals ARE killed directly for cheese!.
Indirectly, yes many many animals are killed for dairy products!. The male calves are killed for veal meat, and then the mothers milk is used for human consumption!. After just a short period of time, much shorter than a cows natural lifespan, the mother cow is herself sent for slaughter when she is past her optimum milk producing level!.
This is why vegans do not eat cheese!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Ok, some of you people are pretty damn ignorant and one would think you'd educate yourself on what you're putting into your body!.!.
YES, animals CAN be killed to make cheese!.
Most softer cheeses (ie: mozzarella, cream or cottage cheese) are without these enzymes, but wiccagirl has it correct!.
The enzyme RENNET may or may not be from an animal's stomach lining (if it is, the animal is KILLED to obtain it)!.
As consumers become more educated, however, the food industry has been forced to seek out alternatives including rennet derived from bacteria (and thus animal free) or even rennetless cheeses!.
Most cheeses without animal rennet (or enzymes which may or may not include rennet) will state so on the label!. It will say something like microbial rennet or enzymes not derived from animals!.
oh, and just in case anyone was wondering, gelatin is almost always derived from beef, so no more jello, pudding, or marshmallows either!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hello, I will be listing some info from my class notes about the process of dairy fermentation (cheese making)!.
Cheese is made from the curds of cows and other animal milks!. The curd is the coagulated casein (milk protein) using an enzyme or acid!.
Enzyme commonly used is rennin, which commonly produces sweeter curds!.!.!. lactic acid is also used to coagulate the casein!.!. the curds are sour!.
Next, I will explain how various cheeses are made, for the first one!.!. Cottage!.
Cottage cheese is made from skim milk and uses lactic acid to coagulate the protein!.
1) The skim milk is pasteurized, cultures of *Streptococcus lactis* and *Leuconostoc citrovorum* are added to the milk!.
2) Mlik ferments/coagulates for 14 hours, then cut into cubes!.
3) The cubes are cooked for 90 min, then drained/washed with cold water!. They then drain and are salted!.
Swiss Cheese:
1) Raw milk is used, cultures of "Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus are added*
2) Curds are pressed and put into a cheese wheel, then the bacteria "Propionibacterium shermanni" converts the lactic acid into propionic acid and CO2 (the holes in the cheese)!.
Blue Cheese
1) Blue cheese, stilton and gorgonzola are made from cows milk, while Roquefort is made from sheep milk!.
2) The mold, Penicillium roqueforti is added to make the blue-green mold in the cheese, also adds the unique flavor!.
Camembert uses cows milk Penicillium camemberti to cover the outer surface of the cheese!.
This being said, not all cheeses contain rennet/chymosin, but some do!.
As for if they are killed for cheese, indirectly yes!. It's the cycle of cattle, male cattle are used for beef/meat, female cows are used for dairy production!. Besides the meat/dairy, the bones/skin and other organs are reused to make many products on the market!. The industry tries to let very little of the animal go to waste!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My grandmother owns a dairy farm!.
The male calfs are either slaughtered at birth or sold to meat farmers (if it's predicted they'll grow big enough)!.
The female cows are bred over and over and over (so they can keep on producing milk) and regardless of their gender, the babies are taken away from her after a while!.
So yes, animals are killed for there to be enough milk for cheese!.
To be sure non are, buy cheese from a small non commercial (no murder) farm and make sure it doesn't have rennet in it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Some cheeses are made by using an enzyme found in the animals stomach, which would mean the animal would likely need to have been slaughtered to obtain it!. But some cheeses don't use that enzyme but something else!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Animals are not killed specifically for their cheese, cheese is just a byproduct of animals killed for their meat!. That is why vegans avoid it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
if the cow gives birth to a male calf, he will be put to death!. Since cows are mostly pregnant, the milk does cause animal death!. Mind you, I'm not a vegetarian, but I know this to be true!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Unbelieveable how many ignorant people there are!. READ ABOUT RENNET!. THEN answer the question!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Cheese is made of milk, either from cows or goats!. No animals are killed in the making of cheese!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Milk, of course, and some cheeses have the stomach lining of cows in them!.

Of course, cheese is only made from the milk!. But, they gotta do something with all those bulls!. They only need the cows, they don't want to pay to feed the bulls, so even if no one ate the bulls or needed their leather, they'd be killed!.
Essentially, there could be no milk industry without killing all those bulls!. And what do you think they do with animals who fail to produce!. Do you think they have a retirement for old cows!? Industries don't usually spend money they don't have to!.
It's fine with me, I like meat!. But don't delude yourself, cheese (and eggs) are the indirect byproduct of murder!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Do your research my lady! Cheese is made from the milk of the animal!. Most animals have to be milked consistantly for their own health!. You can find tofu and soy cheeses if you are worried about the harm of the animal, but there should be no harm in milking an animal!
