Question: Why is soy milk (& soy in general) so good for you!? Is milk (& lactose) really that bad!?
What are the benefits of choosing soy over milk-based products!? Is milk actually that bad for you!? The calcium and vitamins in it are good!. I'm just wondering what has turned so many people to soy milk and soy products over milk products!. What about soy cheese!? Is soy a vegan thing!? Sorry I'm so naive, but I don't know much about soy or the "culture" surrounding it, so I'm curious!. Thanks :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Lactose isn't bad for you unless you are lactose-intolerant meaning you cannot digest it!. Lactose is a type of sugar found in milk from mammals - it is in human breast milk!. So unless you have symptoms of lactose intolerance (gas, cramps, diarrhea) it will not be a problem for you!.

Milk in general - some people feel that milk increases the amount of mucus in your sinus cavities (basically, your nose) and lungs!. I think this is true of some people who may actually be slightly lactose intolerant!. (there are degrees of intolerance depending on how much of a certain enzyme called Lactace that your body makes)

Humans are the only species on earth who routinely drink milk after infancy!. Most people in the world lose the ability to digest milk after childhood because we evolved drinking milk only as young children - after that there was no need for our bodies to keep on producing lactace to break it down!. In fact, worldwide - there are more adults that cannot drink milk that can!.

Milk does contain calcium - but so do a lot of other foods including leafy green vegetables!. Some people may even argue that the calcium in something like spinach is more usable than the calcium found in milk!. You'll hear a lot of people telling you that milk is essential and "does a body good," all that is marketing aimed at you to get you to buy more milk from the people who make money off it!. They probably over-emphasize the importance of milk in our diets!.

One problem with milk, is the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol it contains, and it isn't very rich in vitamins!. Vitamin D is usually added to it in order to make the calcium a little bit more usable!.

They do sell reduced-fat milk, but the labeling is a little bit misleading!. You would think that if they advertise milk as "2% reduced fat milk" that 98% of the fat has been removed!. It hasn't!. Whole milk has about 3!.8% fat to begin with - so 2% fat isn't that much of a reduction!. I think to follow current guidelines for fat intake - you would have to drink 1% reduced fat or skim milk!.

Some people are allergic to the protein found in milk - called casein!. You have to be careful with Soy Cheese if you have this allergy as many soy cheeses contain casein!.

So - it isn't the perfect food we have been led to believe!. It probably won't kill you but it isn't the most healthiest way to get protein and calcium!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Dairy products tend to be made from sick cows/ goats/ whatever!. They don't treat them well, and they're hooked up to pumps for such lengths of time that they bleed, and pus!. The poor things! That gets into the milk!. They filter it,but a certain percentage is bound to get through!. Surely, that's not healthy for ANYONE involved!.

It is also sort of common for people to assume soy is healthier, because it comes from a plant!. They assume it has less calories, more nutritional value, etc!. I work in a cafe, and people ask a lot!. I avoid dairy (due to the mistreatment of animals), and my friends also all assume soy is healthier!. It's not!. Caloric intake wise, it has less than whole milk, and more than skim!. By the way: Apparently whole milk is healthier for you (has more nutrients and vitamins) than skim, despite the fat content!.

I doubt that lactose is 'bad' for you!. Some people's bodies don't have enough lactase (an enzyme, naturally found in your body) to break down the lactose!. Even if you're NOT lactose intolerant, chances are that you cannot chug a gallon of dairy milk!.

There is also a suspicion that soy milk may be a cause of ovarian cancer, in females!. !. !. What isn't, these days, though!?

I'm a vegetarian who has recently stopped eating dairy because of the mistreatment of cows!.!.!. and the fact that (yes this is probably an incorrect statistic) 50% of cows in factory farms have udder infections and their udders are producing pus, which goes into milk!.!.!. and ice cream, and cheese, and butter!.!.!.

sorry but i cant eat pus!. but im having a really hard time finding a milk substitute that tastes good (to me)!.

soy is a really easy to acquire dairy substitute, so i think that's why a lot of people replace their dairy with it!. there are also a lot of rice-based products (cheese, yogurt, milk) that are less popular because they taste bad, and because soy is more nutritious!.

it's FULL of protein, which is something that you tend to lack when you arent eating meat!.


edit: and no, milk really isnt that bad for you!. it really, really isnt, especially skim milk!. just the idea of pus-milk grosses me out!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Dairy products aren't bad for you in and of themselves!. The problem comes into play when you take dairy and do a bunch of sh*t to it, which gives us the white liquid on the shelves we so ignorantly refer to as "milk!." The benefits of milk are only apparent when you drink it in its raw state, and even then, all the calcium and protein that you can get from milk can be found elsewhere!. There's no real need to drink it, honestly!.

As for the lactose problem, many lactose intolerant people find that they can drink raw milk!. Why!? Because when you pasteurize and homogenize the milk, it kills off good enzymes and bacteria!. One of those enzymes is lactase, which helps you digest milk sugars (the lactose)!. Milk in the store doesn't have the lactase, so many people notice that they have trouble digesting the lactose!.!.!.because raw milk still has that enzyme, many people find it's okay to drink!.


Soy milk isn't exactly a safe alternative!. The soy that so many people have been eating for thousands of years is fermented, which makes the amino acids readily available and kills off all the bad things, like phytic acid (prevents you from absorbing other nutrients) and phytoestrogens!. So, unlike milk, soy is best when you consume it after it's been f*cked with, whereas milk is better to consume straight from the cow!.

If you're looking for a high-protein alternative to milk, try hemp milk!.
If you're looking just to get better milk, go to your local farm and buy it from the farmer!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Generally milk is good for our health!. But, if the milk has lactose in a composition, that is not so good for several people!. After metabolisme, lactosa become a lactic acid in our body, and be usually saved in lever, muscles tissue and also brain tissue!. If a lactic acid saved in brain tissue, for several people will become " migrain" and some times hard migrain, so, for them, milk with lactose is not good choice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

unless you have an intolerance, milk itself is perfectly good for you in moderation of course


What i find disturbing is that so many vegetarians think that any pro meat or pro dairy advert is brainwashing propaganda thats all false!.!.!.!.!.yet any pro veg or anti dairy or anti meat adverts is brilliant!.!.!.completely accurate and in no way propaganda

I'd like to know as well!. Since I'm old and grew up on milk, who determined that cow or human or goats' milk wasn't good for you!? Is it because it comes from animals!?

Not a lot to add, but as two people have mentioned cancer I want to give the facts so that you're not alarmed, whether it's dairy or soya you consume!.

Milk and other animal products are not a cause of cancer; dairy is not even a risk factor for cancer, except for prostate cancer where a diet HIGH in dairy is thought to be a possible risk factor (NOT a cause)!.

And soya is not implicated in any cancer either!. Soya proteins contain isoflavones that can mimic a weak oestrogen effect!. It's not the same as the oestrogen your own body makes though - it is 1,000 times weaker than your own body's oestrogen, but it's this that has led to concerns (and rumour) about oestrogen dependent cancer!.


There is no actual scientific evidence that soya causes, prevents, contributes to or affects the progress of any cancer, including oestrogen positive breast cancer, which is the one most often cited - and ovarian cancer!. There are those in the field who argue that isoflavones may be of help in preventing breast cancer or be beneficial to women who have had breast cancer!.

There is current research into whether increasing phyto oestrogens in the diet helps to prevent breast or prostate cancer, and a study in 2002 found that women with the highest levels of soya products in their diets had the lowest breast density - higher breast density being associated with higher breast cancer risk!.

Women with the highest levels of isoflavones in their diet are reported to have significant risk reductions for uterine cancer!.

Milk is horrible for you!. It contains morphin! That's right morphin!. This is the reason people are so addicted to having cheese on everything!. It's the chemicals in cow's milk!. When you drink regular cow's milk and other by-products, you digest thousands of harmful bacteria that leads to disease, especially cancer!. Switch to all soy products!. Try tofu as well!.
