Is mucus/ bacteria/ fungus considered an animal? ?!
if it is, can it be said that it's un-vegan-like to eat mushrooms!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
Ok, I'll explain this using the system I've learned in most of my bio and micro classes!.
To understand the differences!.!. I'll start with the basic of life!. What is "life"!? Most biology text books state that they must have these characteristics!.
1) Metabolism (open system)
2) Reproduction (growth)
3) Differentiation (formation of new cell structure)
4) Communication (primarily by means of chemicals taken in or released)
5) Movement (self propulsion)
6) Evolution (new biological properties over time **change in characteristics**)
There are 2 primary empires in the tree of life!.
Eukaryote and Prokaryotes!. From here, various branches divide into what we know as the domains!. These include Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya!. Both Bacteria and Archaea are prokaryotes, while Eukarya are eukaryotes!.
Eukaryote
"A cell or organism having a membrane-enclosed nucleus and normally organelles"!.
Prokaryote
"Cell / organism lacking a nucleus and other membrane-enclosed organelles and usually having its DNA in a single circular molecule"
Prokaryotes consist of Bacteria and Archaea!. (as mentioned above)
Eukaryotes, however, branch into different kingdoms!.!.!. commonly recognized as such!.
Kingdoms:
**Plants
**Fungi
**Animals
(Most do not recognize protists as a kingdom)
Now!.!.!. lets take a look!.
Bacteria: Not in the animal kingdom, not in the same domain, nor the same empire!. Considered an animal!? Not even close!
Fungus: In the same domain, different kingdom!.
Not considered an animal!.
Mucus: Formed by mucous membranes, mucus is widely secreted by animals!.
Is it in the animal kingdom!? Yes, most animals do secrete this!.!. but it of itself is not an animal!.
So for your answer: NO to all of the above!
Edit: Native, mushrooms are actually fungi, not plants!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, mucus, bacteria, fungus, etc!. are not considered animals!. That is a commonly misconstrued myth(s) behind veganism!. Contrary to popular belief, vegans can partake in consumption of alcohol and bread products without having to worrry of "losing their veganism" because of yeast!. Yeast is considered a bacteria by most people yet it considered a fungus (which is indeed a type of bacteria) by most scientists!.
Anyways, mucus is completely disgusting, but yes, I would say that it is a bacteria!. Assuming you don't eat your mucus (let's hope you don't), you can remain vegan!.
Mushrooms are technically a bacteria, because they are a fungus!. That is why many people will get sick after eating uncooked mushrooms!. That is also the reason that raw yeast (something found in many carnivorous plates) is often listed as "unedible" and "unsafe for human consumption"!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

ok four of the big categories in the organism world:
- bacteria
- fungus
- animal
- plant
Mucus is not alive, so it is in none of these categories!. I don't know why you would be eating mucus unless you had a cold and it was all drippy!.!.!.which doesn't violate vegan rules I'm pretty sure!.
Bacteria is obviously in the bacteria category, so it is alive, but they are not animal, they are single-celled organisms!.
Mushrooms are fungus, and so have a special category which is neither animal nor plant!.
So, I guess all of these things are vegan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Mucus!. Not an animal, duh!. But it is an animal byproduct!. I don't think most people eat mucus (especially not mucus that isn't their own)!.
Bacteria are not plants, nor are they animals!. Ditto for fungus!. Not plants, not animals!. Both are living things!.
So, mucus is not vegan, but bacteria and fungi are!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

RULE OF THUMB MY FRIEND
If it can be grown from any parts of a plant or plant by product or is found growing wild out of the ground it is edible by your definition of Vegan!.
Don't take it too seriously because as long as you are not eating meat, eggs, (milk) or seafood you are on the correct path!. Then EDUCATE yourself on what you like to eat and where it comes from!. Live and learn, don't ask stupid questions, pick up a book or google it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm a vegetarian- and I consider mucus/bacteria/fungus plants, not animals!. They don't think in the same way we do, and they don't walk around and have lives!. My best friend (vegan) eats them too!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Mushrooms are not an animal, they are a fungi!. Some veggie pizzas, for example, have mushrooms!. Its mainly a matter of personal preference!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
