How long will it take to get my mom to support my vegan diet?!


Question: How long will it take to get my mom to support my vegan diet!?
I became a vegetarian a little less than a month ago to protest animal exploitation, and at first my mom wasn't very supportive!. She threw the usual arguments at me (not enough protein, vitamin deficiencies, etc!.!.!.) Amazingly, she decided to do a little research online and found out that vegetarian diets can be more healthy than omnivorous ones, so she's decided to partially join me in being an ovo-lacto vegetarian!. (She still eats gelatin and animal-rennet cheese, though!.)

Well, lately she has been super-supportive of my choice!. Shes actually helped me cook tofu and bought me special foods!. Since she seemed to accept it, I have been dropping not-so-subtle hints that I would like to be vegan!. She keeps telling me "not yet--just wait a while until you're used to being vegetarian"!. Well, today I told her I was vegan from now on, and she seemed to think it was a joke!. I kept telling her I was serious, and she kept laughing!. I'm pretty sure she still doesn't believe me, so my game plan is to refuse to eat any animal products tomorrow and every day after then until she does believe me!. Oh, by the way, I'm 14!. I can't get a job and I don't get enough allowance to buy my own food!. I might not be eating well for a week or two :(

How long do you think it will take for her to accept it!? Do you think she ever will accept it!?

**Please don't comment on how unhealthy vegan diets are for growing teens!. I know for a fact that it is completely possible to be healthy as a vegan!.!.!. I had a good friend who was very healthy and vegan throughout his teens!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I understand how you feel!. I'm fourteen too and my mom isn't very supportive on my veganism!. I went vegan when I was about!.!.!. eight!. Yeah, eight!. I lost too much weight, couldn't cook my own food and was forced to go back to my old, meat-eating habits!. Anyway, I went vegan again this year, and I found it hard at first!. I went vegan in one day!. It was my New Year's resolution!. There wasn't much I could eat and I lost three pounds the first week!. Not the healthy way and not good!. The vegan diet isn't hard to live by now!. You'd be surprised by what you can eat!. I cook my own food every day, which I normally wouldn't do, and my mom is!.!.!. surprised!. I go out to eat with my family, I substitute meat with imitation meat made from soy, and I eat like I used to!. I make my favorite recipes from tofu!. I eat soy ice cream!. I eat vegan muffins and cookies!. It can be overwhelming at first, but there isn't a large difference!. Show you're mom that you becoming vegan won't affect her!. That's what my mother was most concerned about!. She thought it would add stress to her life and she'd have to cook meals for me, but no!. I handle it!. Yes, she might have to buy products especially for you!. Buying your veg-friendly food costs around the same amount as how much meat each individual family member would eat!. I don't know if the change from vegetarian to vegan would be hard for you!. I went from meat-eater to vegan in one day!. Ask her for your support!. My friends give me the most support and it gives me strength!. Maybe that's what you need from her!. You don't need acceptance, you need support!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Your mom should accept you!. You are not doing anything wrong, infact you are doing the most healthy thing you can do for yourself!. She can't let you starve! It is just all new to her, let her take her time to get used to it!. My mom though it was a joke when I became vegan but now I am used to it and I can never go back to eating meat!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Amen you can be a perfectly healthy teen vegan, heck, I am one!
If you don't have the time to plan meals and follow the vegan food pyramid (http://www!.veganfoodpyramid!.com/) as close as you can then yes I would say a multivitamin is good!. Make sure that you have one that is not made from gelatin, so capsules are not the best idea!.
Protein is really not a big deal, as long as you eat a balanced diet with at least 2 servings of nuts or legumes or beans per day, protein is no problem!. Kale, or really any leafy greens have calcium in them!. Here is a list of veggies with calcium- http://www!.all-creatures!.org/health/comm!.!.!.
It's really not as hard as it seems, but it is overwhelming at first!

Show your mom all the research you can, and maybe get a book(May I recommend the Vegan source book!? VERY good read for people wanting to be vegan!

I mean look at Donald Watson, nobody in his family ever lived passed 75 because of heart disease or other things that have been linked to a diet with to much meat or saturated fat, he went vegetarian at 14, and vegan at 18!. He lives until he was 95 years old!.
Explain how there are healthy vegans if it is such an unhealthy lifestyle!. Explain how nutritionists are saying it is healthy as well(some are!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I allowed my children to make their own minds up!. I didn't necessarily agree with them, but you have to allow your kids some freedom!. My kids are grown up now!. They have learned for themselves!. They don't aspire to things they did as young teenagers, but it's all about growing up!.

I eat the diet that nature intended!. If you did any reseach you would know breast milk is loaded with saturated fat and cholesterol and has been PROVEN to cure various diseases!.

The healthiest cultures devoid of heart disease and cancer were predominantly high fat and meat diets!.

I woulden't reccomend smoking ciggarates to anyone!. Chewing Tobbaco in is natural form that hasen't been spread with any chemicals is healthy!.


Saturated fats are healthy as well!.
