I'm constantly being teased because I'm a vegetarian...?!

Question: I'm constantly being teased because I'm a vegetarian!.!.!.!?
Last year, I stopped eating red meat, and became a semi-vegetarian!. People were always telling me it didn't do any good, even when I told them about the health benefits of cutting some or all the meat out of your diet!.!.!.!. Well, not too long ago at all, I became a full vegetarian!. I spent Friday and Saturday at my sister's house!. Her husband, and most of his friends, are really in to hunting!. They tried telling me that meat, especially game meat, was very healthy for you!. I told them about the lower risk of obesity, heart attacks, cancer, and such, and they still insisted meat was healthy!. I told them about animal cruelty, and they asked me why I cared, because they're just "smelly, brain-dead animals"!. I just can't win! What do I do to make them stop!? Help, please!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I wish I knew why, but for some reason people behave very religiously about their eating habits!. They try to impose their sensibilities on what is your personal decision!. What you eat does not affect them, so why do they care!? For a long time, I've listened to both sides of this, veggies and meat-eaters both pushing for everyone one else to eat like them!. That said, who cares!?
The simple fact is that these people have invested themselves in the notion that you are doing some kind of harm to yourself!. There is a lot of false information about the vegetarian diet, and because the concept is foreign to them, they latch onto it!. My advice to you is just let it go!. They will not open up their minds enough to accept your personal decision!. It's awful I know!. But you can't change their minds anymore than they could convince you what you're doing is wrong!. I'm sorry!.
Don't give them a reaction!. It seems like that's what they're looking for!. At least now all I hear is my friends asking the waiter if they have sticks & leaves on the menu "for our vegetarian friend!" when we go out to eat =)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Don't bother arguing with them!. When people are extremely set in their ways, there is very little you can do to sway their opinions!. Just don't shove your vegetarianism down their throats and they probably won't shove the meat eating praise down yours!.

Don't be self righteous about your decision to become a vegetarian, and don't proselytize about vegetarianism!. It's not about "winning" it's about personal choice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

People don't like it when someone does something differently from the way they do it!. Don't worry about making them stop because they won't!. I am a vegan and proud of it and I get teased but I don't care!. I have to please myself!. I can't worry about pleasing anyone else!. Just tell them that if they don't stop that you no longer want to talk to them or be in their company!. Let them know how serious you are!. They want you to back down and go back to eating meat!. Don't give in to them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Stop trying to win!. It's not a game, it's a way of life!. Respect the way they choose to live their lives and all you can do is ask them to respect the way you choose to live yours!. If it bothers you a lot, you can choose how much time you spend with them, and they can choose how much time they spend with you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

unfortunately you cannot change everybody's mind!. It is to bad that they were giving you such a hard time but that is life!. You will have to deal with people all the time that do not agree with you and the decisions you make but as long as you are happy with the choices you made and can defend them then you will get through any thing!. You also have to be willing to accept other peoples choices about how to live and what they want to eat!. That's just life!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would just stop participating in the conversation!. If they make a big fuss, just ask them to respect your decisions and leave it be!. If they can't do that, then I would probably leave!. It's none of their business anyway - it's not like you're shooting up heroin!.!.!. you're a vegetarian for goodness sakes! They're never going to understand your point of view and visa versa!. Hold fast to your convictions and don't let them make you feel bad about them!. It's your opinion of the choices in your life that matters, not theirs!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well PeTA doesn't help:

With no mountain lions around anymore how should the deer population be managed!? I'm not a hunter myself but I think deer need to be managed somehow so they don't starve to death!. I only eat about 3-6 oz of meat a week so I'm not too concerned about health issues!.

And game meat is much more healthy than beef or pork!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

who cares, i am a chickentarian, i only eat chicken nuggets like
chick-fil-a, just tell them meat is murder and you don't give a ****!. that should shut them up!. if they still are annoying, punch one!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You should just stand up for what you believe in! Tell them everything you know but you have to understand that not everyone believes in the same things!. Just do your best to stay true to yourself!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You cannot!. It is just a part of the cross you have chosen to carry!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

hey i think that is great !! I wish i could do that !!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Let their comments slide off you!. I live in Oklahoma, stopped eating pork and some other meats when I was 11 and I never heard the end of it!. I let them say what they wanted, but Oklahoma is one intolerant state!. People can't mind their own business, including school-age children, and I have been analyzed and called all sorts of names, just for not eating certain foods (and I didn't make a big deal out of it to invite the attention!.) I could care less what people thinks, but some would also try to trick me into eating something!. The most important thing is to make sure you aren't becoming anemic, so they won't tell you "I told you so!." And practice other healthy things as well!. Elephants don't drink milk after they are weaned, and don't eat meat either, they are the largest land-mammals, and they have very strong bones and enough red blood cells and muscles!. Ask the big macho hunters how that can be, and see what they say!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's not really relevant what anyone else feels about your vegetarianism!. They are entitled to their feelings!. If they keep pestering and pestering, they are being rude and inconsiderate -- but it would also be rude to correct their misbehavior!.

A typical response to such inconsiderate people is a sweet smile, and "Thank you for sharing!. I don't personally agree, but I respect your opinions!."

Obviously, and for whatever reason, it amuses them to taunt and provoke you!.

Yet, unless you have a particular rapport with any of them, it might be futile to convince them of your views!.

Rather, if their views are important to you, you would snare the hunters with kindnesses and social graces, without confronting the vegetarian issue!.

Then, once these individuals are thawed a little by your kindnesses, you would get hold of them, alone, such as a trip for two to a coffee house or cafe!. Then, away from their peers, they might pay more serious attention to your opinions!.

Nevertheless, it is necessary to acknowledge these individuals' independence of thought!. If they hear the many worthy justifications for vegetarianism and anti-cruelty, and still persist in their thugly ways, why, that's between them and the wrath of Providence on the Last Day of Judgment!.

Sure would suck if they turned out to be wrong, eh!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I know what you mean, I had a friend who was convinced animals didn't have souls and that if you didn't eat meat, you would starve and die!. Sometimes people will never change, but if you're really curious, ask them why they meat is healthy and tell them to prove it!.

If they enjoy hunting animals, then they obviously don't care about them and their lives!. One sad fact of life is that people will never ever change, and they will never listen to you because they are convinced that they are right!. Just be open-minded and accept that this is their way of thinking!. Be respectful and if they continue to tease you, stop talking to them altogether!.

It's your lifestyle, and they probably don't realize how much it means to you and they might just think of it as something trivial, like a bad hair day!. If you have to, just tell your sister it bothers your feelings when they tease you about you being a vegetarian!. Hope this helps!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
