I need vegan opinions on zoos!?!

Question: I need vegan opinions on zoos!!?
I have been a vegetarian for about 7 years with 2 of those years being vegan!. I have never considered having an opinion on zoos because as a kid, I never really went to zoos!.

Well now that my beliefs in veganism are deepening, I am finding myself wanting to be around animals more!. Well the only way I know to do this is to visit zoos!.

I know people have different thoughts on zoos both good and bad!. I need some advice though!. Are zoos good or bad!. And if they're bad, where can I go to spend time with animals!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
i am a vegetarian of 4 years (btw i have so much respect for you, i wish i could be a vegan not allowed to though by my parents, i am only 15 and the only vegetarian in my house and my family doesn't really get it but anyways thats a different story)
i personally think zoos are good and bad!. I think that some of the institutions and programs that they help to promote are really good but i seriously disagree with how they feel it is okay to take an animal from a foreign country, ship them over all boxed up, and then keep them on display in cages for the rest of there lives while people pay money to go and gawk at them!. wild animals aren't meant to live in captivity and that is my opinion!.

if you want someplace to be close to nature/animals then i suggest hiking or taking a walk along wooded park pathway or there is always the option of getting an animal yourself which i guess can also be constituted as keeping an animal in captivity but try finding one at a local animal shelter that you can rescue it from!. i'm guessing that being your pet would probably be preferable to the suffering in the dingy conditions they live in at the shelter!. (try to make sure that it is a humane animal shelter first though because even though you might think it would be best to save the animals at shelters where they will
be euthanized if not selected in time you also dont want to be the one supporting that kind of shelter)

I think it would depend on the zoo more than anything!. I'm vegan
and I wouldn't go to zoos where I think the animals are been treated
poorly, I used to work at Australia zoo and in my eyes I think they
do a good job their and provide the animals with what they need!.
also they help a lot of sick and injured ones so I wouldn't mind
going there and giving them money!. But I don't 'cause it's so pricey
and I can't get in for free now that I don't work there!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Go to the wild animal park, get a dog(but you need to feed it animal based foods for optimal health), go to the park and feed the ducks!. There are other ways to spend time with animals besides going to zoos!. Zoos don't give animals enough space!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegans and vegetarians do not typically support the Zoo!. How ever if you want to go!.!.!.!.!.Go!. Do what is right for you and if you are okay with it don't worry about what others may say!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't have a black and white opinion on zoos!. I think the majority of zoos are ridiculous in a way; they keep animals in captivity and make money off of showcasing animals in a "mock" natural environment, which is a direct acknowledgement that they do not belong there, that they need space and territory and need some basic control of their lives!.

Some zoos have cooperated with environmental organizations to help increase the numbers of threatened and endangered species, and of couse there's things like animal sanctuaries where animals have far more room and are generally not exploited, but rather kept there to protect them for various reasons!. Animals raised in captivity won't adapt well to a life in the wild, so some degree of oversight is required!. I think places that have very low human traffick, and offer a lot more room for animals to roam and explore, like animal sanctuaries, are a much better choice, if you want to see some animals and support them!.

You don't really spend time with animals at a zoo anyhow!. I think there's no educational merit for everyday folks in seeing an animal in a little enclosed pen in a zoo, an out of shape animal that has been raised in captivity, with a shorter lifespan and health problems oftentimes unique to wildlife raised in captivity!.!.!. I think you'd learn more from a documentary, or from traveling and observing animals in a respectful way in their natural habitats, rather than assuming that they are objects for humans to collect and showcase, like painted plates or teacups, each kept in their little pretend-home in a zoo!. I don't like the very basic approach to wildlife zoos take, in other words - the animals aren't wild in comparison to their out-of-captivity counterparts, and it doesn't illustrate a thing about what these animals are like aside from allowing you to see them from a few feet away in person!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
