Some wine and beer are vegan, but most are not!.
During the fining process, many wine and beer makers use isinglass (made from fish bladders), milk protein, meat based gelatin and raw egg to filter the wine!.
Certified vegan wine and beer is filtered using a natural silica clay called bentonite!.
Certified vegan wine and beer will normally say so on the bottle because it is a more specialised product!.
But wine and beer makers aren't required to list on their labels which, if any, fining agents were used!.
However, in Australia most tend to list the fining agents on the bottle because of all the allergies flying around these days!.
PETA and other cruelty-free animal organisations can give you a list of certified vegan alcohol!.
Some cigarettes are vegan (I think cigarettes by Natural American Spirit are vegan) but many vegans would avoid smoking because it does not fit in with the perception of a healthy vegan diet!.
Binge drinking to excess is very bad for your health but drinking red wine in moderation (one glass of good quality wine per day) is well-known from years of scientist study to be beneficial for your health!.

The only "animal bi-product" that i could think that your mom would be referring to would be caused by the yeast that is used to ferment, and I if you consider yeast an animal then it would be full of bi-product since the fermentation process is the act of the yeast eating the sugar and the waste that they produce is the ethyl alcohol!.!.!.i guess i never really thought of it this way, but all alcohol consists of yeast poo!
