We can't know for sure if bugs feel pain, but vegans don't want to risk that!. We don't exactly need to colour our food red, so why bother!?
Most vegans also avoid honey, because it's derived from bees and there are some cruel practices involved in getting them to make enough!.
Most vegans also avoid wool of all varieties, though it doesn't kill the animal cruelty can be involved in keeping the animals!.
I lived with a vegan who also dissagreed with riding horses on the grounds that they have become tools or toys of humanity!. Some can't even give birth without a vet you see!.
She had a dog, but that is a much more complex relationship with a domesticated animal!.
Drinks with Taurine are not vegan, so Red Bull is off the cards too!.
Don't worry though, there are plenty of happy healthy vegans, just go to your library and get an armful of veggie/vegan books!. You can adapt all kinds of veggie recipies to vegan ones!.
Just an aside!. My vegan housemate did eat eggs from time to time!. A mate kept pet hens out the joy of just having them!. They didn't breed them so there was no way of supporting the meat market!. Any eggs they produced were infirtile and a natural product of a healthy happy hen!. Guilt and cruelty free!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Your question is a long one!. Vegans are vegetarians that do not eat any animal products at all - no eggs and no dairy products!. So, they could eat wheat and sugar, bread (as long as it does not contain whey - a milk by-product)!.
However, most vegans are also concerned about health and would not eat a lot of sugar and processed wheat!.
To answer your question about vitamin D3, here is a link to the Wikpedia Encyclopedia http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Cholecalcif!.!.!. Basically, Cholecalciferol is vitamin D3 and is important for the absorption of calcium from the stomach and for the functioning of calcium in the body!.
Check the sugar content on the energy and juice drinks!. They probably have a lot of sugar in them!. Otherwise, I doubt there is any animal by-products in them!.
Most hard candy is ok!. Stay away from anything that has milk in it!. Nuts are fine!.
I don't know if those bugs feel pain, but I personally don't like eating bugs!. For those who don't know what they are, they are used in food color and in some cosmetics!. Yuk!.
I hope this helps!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Many people have given you information on vitamin D3: please be aware that vitamin D3 is often added to things that may appear to be vegan (ie, margarine) but is NOT suitable for vegans as it is animal-derived!. Vitamin D2 is a vegetarian form of the same supplement!.
As for sugar and flour - yes vegans eat it! (yeast too!) Refined sugar is often processed using bone char and may be avoided by some vegetarians/vegans!. Personally, I find it most viable to use vegan sugar at home (you can buy sugar that specifically says it was processed using only plant sources), and not worry about whether sugar may or may not be vegan when I'm dining out (or in something like a granola bar, but I also avoid most pre-packaged foods)!.
PETA has some good information on foods that are 'accidentally vegan' on their website, including lists of candy!.
As for carmine/cochineal - even if bugs don't feel pain in the same way as we do, veganism is about not using animals as commodities!. Plus, it's gross! Bug juice, anyone!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
