Why does vegan or organic food cost so much?!

Question: Why does vegan or organic food cost so much!?
Who set's the prices!? How much production goes into creating something that is natural!? I went to Whole Foods the other day and didn't buy anything because everything was ridiculously priced!. I know that there are those who advocate that we should be cruelty-free etc!. and that the vegan diet is part of a healthy lifestyle!. But is that lifestyle accessible to people who live on limited budgets!? I mean I don't have the type of money to buy bread that costs over 5 bucks!. Does veganism add to the gap between the upper class and everybody else!? Is being a vegan a new status symbol that we should be aware of along with the type of car we drive!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

The prices are artificially jacked up!. Call it a 'health food' and they jack the price up!. I see the same product in the back of some Chinese supermarket for $1!.50, at the Health Food store it's $6!. Same item!.

I bought this No Name Whole Wheat Flour for years!. It was cheap, but also, on the ingredients it said "100% organic whole wheat flour"!. Then a couple years ago they changed the packaging!. Put a Colour photo on the front of the bag, and the word "organic" in big letters!.!.!. now the same product has gone up in price!.!.!. cost three times as much!!! It's all a big FAT lie man!. I talk to farmers who say organic is a cheaper way to farm!. I read a book by a Japanese farmer who grew everything organically using his 'work less' methods of cover crops etc!. and letting nature do most of the work!. He also found that it was a cheaper way to farm, and produced superior product!. When he found out that a store he sold to was jacking up the price and selling his items as a 'speciality' product, he removed his product from that store and stopped selling to them!. It really pissed him off and *this* is the reason 'health' foods cost more!.

PS, I was owner of an organic baker!. The *cost* to produce a quality 1KG loaf of bread was $4-5!. The *cost*!. So, selling a loaf for 6 or 7 dollars, and we make $2-3 per loaf!.

But, you go to the store and buy some wonderbread -- it's not even bread, it's just crap!.!.!. you pay nearly $4 for a loaf that is well under 1KG!. So, what's it going to be, spend your money on *crap* that has no nutritional or health value at all, or spend a few dollars more to support your local owned and operated organic whole grain naturally leavened bread bakery and get some of the best product you can get -- and in return not only do you fill your belly, but you support your local small business, and you invest in your own health too!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Um!.!.!.maybe you should try buying food someplace besides Whole Foods! I don't know many vegans who would be too excited about shopping there!. Maybe rich upper-class vegetarians who drive Mercedes around!.!.!.!.!.

Meat is one of the most expensive things you can buy!. Grains, beans, fruits and vegetables are some of the cheapest things!. Try your local farmer's market for fairly priced, local food! The vegan items which are expensive are things like mock meats or rice ice cream, which are processed and lack nutrition!. If you base your diet on whole grains, fruits and veggies, and beans and nuts then you will not break your bank!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The yield of organic crops per acre is significantly less than non-organic crops!. Otherwise every farmer would practice organic farming!. So, you have to pay a premium for them!. Shopping at Whole Foods is not the best solution for buying organics!. Their products are great but their prices are double what I pay for organic produce at my local marketsWww@FoodAQ@Com

i spend a lot less money as a vegan!.

i do not buy a lot of the processed packaged foods!. those are expensive even for people who eat meat to eat those all the time!. you are paying for marketing and convenience!. tofu is only 2!.50 for a pound block here! beans are cheap, rice is cheap!. pasta is cheap!. organic fruits and vegetables are not badly priced here either!. meat is very expensive for quality cuts!. being vegan is much cheaper if u r not suckered into buying convenience foods!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's much cheaper to be vegan!.

You don't have to buy fake meats and you don't have to buy in specialist shops!. Fruit and veg are the same price whether you're a vegan or not!.

I'm a vegan on a very limited budget indeed!. Beans and grains are a lot cheaper than meat!.

Come on, I think capitalism rather than veganism is responsible for the class divide, don't you!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Think about it this way!. We spend so much money on our clothes, hair, make-up, cars, etc!.!.!. but isn't our body the most important thing we have!? We should be willing to spend the appropriate money to make sure that we are eating a healthy diet!.
Besides, once you cut out all of the meat and processed foods!.!.!. your grocery bill shouldn't be too much higher than it normally is!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You don't have to eat organic to be vegan!. Organic produce is grown mostly on small farms, so production costs are higher!.

Vegan products are inexpensive compared to their meat counterparts!. Tofu, TVP, wheat gluten, beans, seeds, and nuts are way cheaper per pound then lean meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Whole foods is a chain, just like walmart!.

If you live near a city, why don't you find a coop or some other natural foods store that isn't a big chain!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

which products are you specifically talking about!?
there is organic carrots for a dollar there and bread for 2 dollars!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The price differential is because there those with more money than sense that are willing to pay for it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Crap is cheap!. Quality ingredients cost!. Look at the ingredients on a loaf of bread at Whole Foods and then look at a loaf of, say, Wonder Bread and tell me which you'd rather eat!.

You might want to Google cheap vegan and see what you can buy that won't cost much!. also Environmental Working Group (www!.ewg!.org) has lists of foods you really want to eat organic (such as apples, cherries, peppers, celery) and food it doesn't really matter whether or not you eat it organic (corn, some types of onions)!. If you avoid processed foods--easier said than done--you can do it on the cheap!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
