How do I reply to this? Help Please!?!
Bein vegetarian I find Ian often faced with the question, why are you vegetarian!? I automatically answer "for the animals", this is always followed up by the resopnse, "but the animals will die anyway"! How would you reply to their ingorance to this response I need some help i have never been very good at comebacks!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
Since I am a vegetarian as well, I know a little bit of how you feel!. I get asked the same question all the time!. I usually reply with "because I don't like meat", since I really don't!. But I see your situation is somewhat different!.
It may be a little gross or rude but I feel a good comeback is "Well, you'll die eventually too but no one cooks and eats you!. "
You may have to say it in a joking manner so someone doesn't think it's a crude remark but it just may well work!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

These are all great answers IMHO!. I especially like Gails answer!. I was thinking the same thing!. I have dabbled with becoming a vegetarian for years on and off and finally have done it!. It's been a month straight now!. I feel the same way, "Would you eat your pet!?" That's exactly how I started to feel, and I remind people (when asked or challenged) that this animal once had life's blood racing through it!. It was a breathing animal, with eyes and skin!. That usually gets people grossed out when they think about it and they leave you alone!. I wonder too if those people actually prepare their own food!. When I have to cook for my husband, the blood coming out of the meat makes me want to puke!. I have to open all the windows and I don't cook my food in the same pans!. But back to your question:
I don't usually get to that point, but you can have it in your "bag of tricks" when someone does that to you!. I usually say that I do it for my health, I feel better, I look better, and people die every year from parasites from animals!. also, you cannot be sure what the animals are being fed, and then you in turn are ingesting it and feeding it to your children, your loved ones!.
What always gets my husband is the amount of food he could be eating, rather than that fish filet at McDonalds in which he's still hungry afterwards!.
You don't have to make vegetarianism a religion but if you feel sternly about your choices, make it very clear and they'll leave you alone, eventually!. They're also acting like that because they're feeling defensive, like you're saying they should be doing it too, even if you're not actually saying it!. They feel guilty!. That's always a little satisfaction to me!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'd say: I am vegetarian for ethical reasons!. I do not believe animals should be mass bred, mass raised and mass slaughtered simply for the 15 seconds of 'pleasure' of the taste of them in my mouth!.
Like any other industry, the meat trade is based upon supply and demand!. Perhaps the same amount of animals will be slaughtered if I don't eat meat, but the fact is, millions of people world wide are vegetarian and vegan!. And millions of people do make a difference!.
also, I'd point out that even they believed your efforts were that futile, if you believe something is wrong, don't do it!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Rephrase it!. Instead of "for the animals," say that you don't feel comfortable eating animals!. They can say the animals will die anyway, but you're still off the hook, because it's a personal choice, not martyrdom, as they're interpreting!. It's almost the same thing, but it's harder to contest!. You don't need to go into detail!.!.!. It will make your friend uncomfortable and you will be put on the spot!. If you come up with an automatic response that is vague enough that it can't really be disputed, you're fine!. Don't try to do the comeback thing with this one!.!.!. you'll hardly ever win!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
You just need to be more specific!. The person asking is ignorant mainly because you are not giving them enough information (maybe you don't have time to fully explain, I've been in this situation many times)--each person is a vegetarian for a different reason!.
My advice is to think of what you will say next time someone asks, and make the answer concise and clear, and make it a good argument on your side!.
If you are a vegetarian simply because you don't believe in eating dead animals, then tell them it's just a personal morality issue--say you know they will die, but that you believe it is unethical and disrespectful to eat the dead animal!.
On the other hand, if you don't eat animals/support the industry because most are raised in cruel and inhumane practices their entire lives, then say this, because it much more effective to whoever is questioning and they will understand!. And if they STILL say things like "well so you'll eat animals that are raised humanely!?" then say what you believe (just yes or no), but in this situation it is best to say you personally don't eat meat at all, but that you PROMOTE free-range family farms or more humane meat alternatives to meat-eaters and to whoever is questioning you!.
That way, you not only get your personal stance across, but you are promoting knowledge of animal cruelty to them, as well as offering a more friendly alternative to their meat-eating lifestyle!.
also, if they pull the "well why do you think GOD put animals here!?"!.!.!.just say that YES god may have put animals here for our consumption, but the bible also says that we are to give them our MERCY AND RESPECT!.!.!.!.if you want to eat meat, that's fine, but God probably wouldn't support the cruel ways you are raising it!. So just try that and at leat show them that if their religion says meat is ok to eat, then it's not okay to treat animals like sh*t before they are slaughtered!.
also!.!.!.just a personal tip/recommendation: if you are vegetarian for animal cruetly/treatment issues, I recommend going vegan in the future!. Egg hatcheries and milk farms are in most cases even worse in treating animals than the farms that raise animals for slaughterhouses!. I recommend this book as a start if you want to learn more : MEAT MARKET by ERIK MARCUS!.!.!.great book!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I strongly dislike it when people challenge my choices!. Sometimes I ask them "Would you eat your dog!?", but mostly I tell them that I can't stand the thought of eating an animal!. It's my choice!.
If they really push, I ask them why they are so interested in my eating habits when I don't question theirs!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just say, "Yes, but not by MY hand", and let it go!. No amount of explaining is going to change a narrow minded persons way of thinking, so don't waste your breath!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
say " yes but they would have lived to their full lifespan, while factory farmed animals have years of living left when they are killed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Be confident!. "I am what I am and if you do not like it, Tough!"Www@FoodAQ@Com
Actually, many of the animals would not have been born in the first place if people didn't eat meat in the amounts they do!.
And it's true that everyone and everything dies, but if an animal isn't killed and eaten by humans s/he will 1) live out a full lifespan (animals are killed for food at a fraction of that); 2) die of illness; or 3) die at the claws of a predator!. Any of them is better than living in a cramped cage on a factory farm and dying in an assembly line slaughterhouse where they are butchered alive!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
