Why does bean consumption cause agony in my gut?!

Question: Why does bean consumption cause agony in my gut!?
Now, I tried to find an answer to this in search but I found a bunch of rediculous answers!. Please, I'm serious here!. I'm not talking just gas, I"m talking about a sharp pain in my right side that will last all night and sometimes into the next day!. I had my gallbladder taken out two years ago and within the last month finally made the switch to a vegetarian diet!. But every time I try to incorporate beans, I'm in agony!. Now as a vegetarian, I am under the assumption that beans should be a necessary part of the diet!. In effect, the beans are the meat, right!?

I ate a small amount of garbanzo beans last night and had a very rough night!. I used to eat them with no problem years ago!. I'm starting to think its only certain beans because I can eat Morningstar black bean burgers and I've had vegetarian chili which is chocked full of beans with no issue!. Even lentil soup is fine!. I don't get it!. But I had a bean salsa last year that could've put me in the hospital!. It's not the spice either!. I can eat spicy foods with no problems!.

I'm also lactose intolerant as well, but I do force myself to eat an occassional yogurt or string cheese for the calcium and protein!. Any suggestions!?

I want to keep my diet various and healthy!. Weight loss is just an added side effect as far as I"m concerned!. It's not my main goal here!. I just want to be healthy!. My dad had to have serious stomach surgery last year and we almost lost him!. I don't want that to be me! Thanks ahead of time!.

Again, I"m not asking this to lose weight!. I posted this on the health board and got a bunch of answers about losing weight!. I am asking a nutrtitional question (s)!. I'm trying to figure out which beans I can eat, why certain ones are better or not, or a possible way to prepare them that this won't happen!. Thanks ahead of time!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Vegetarians / vegans do not need to eat beans, so do not worry about that!
Some people can be intolerant to beans and other true pulses!. also you need to make sure the beans you eat are cooked properly, ie!. soaked over night and boiled for 10 mins before you add them to a meal!.

If you ate them alongside dairy then it might be the lactose intolerance coming through!. I certainly don't recommend dairy products if you are intolerant!. You do not need them for protein (everything, including lettuce has protein in it) neither calcium, dairy leeches calcium from your bones which can lead to osteoporosis!. Plenty of leafy green veg instead!. If you are that worried take a supplement!.

So yes, maybe you could tolerate the burgers etc with beans in because they had been cooked longer!? Perhaps cut out beans and dairy for a month and then try beans again!.If you are in agony you probably are intolerant to them!.

You will be fine with lentils as they aren't beans :) The green lentils are far more filling than the red so go for those!.

Remember to always follow cooking instructions!Www@FoodAQ@Com

You may not have the enzymes required to digest beans properly!.
Try a product called Beano before you eat beans next time!.
You'll find Beano at your pharmacy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Oh my gosh this happened to me once! I went home and binged on a HUGE bucket of hummus (which as we all know is made entirely og garbanzo beans) and I had the worst night ever!. I couldnt hold good dowen, and I felt really bloated!. I was gassy (hey, lots of fiber in your diet is gunna do this girl) and very uncomfortable for a week!. I feel fine now, but being a vegetarian does mean eating a lot of foods that gives you gas!. The stomach thing w/ the beans was really weird, but trust me, it passesWww@FoodAQ@Com

Please get medical attention as soon as possable!. Sharp pain on the right side could be an appendicitis attack!.

-- When making your own beans always throw out the soak water!.
-- Don't eat other gassy foods along with beans!.
-- Don't eat to many beans at one time!.
-- Since your lactose intolerant use soy milk instead of dairy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
