Popeye was a propaganda cartoon during the war!. The civilians at home were given spinach rations to eat as they sent the meat to the soldiers, they wanted to show how great spinach in a tin was so they created popeye!. That is also why you see him fighting that big guy, guess he was Turkish!?
Still great cartoon, guess he was kind of promoting vegetarianism!
