A conversation with my class made me realize how many animals die when veggies are produced?!

Question: A conversation with my class made me realize how many animals die when veggies are produced!?
This is horrible!.!.Cats, baby bunnies, turtles, all kind of animals are killed by machines that harvest corn and wheat and such!.!.

I feel bad now, is there any sort of specific veggie company that doesn't harm animals as much!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's about "Most Good, Least Harm" and being veg is much less harmful than those who eat meat are responsible for!. For one thing, they don't eat just meat, they eat plants too!. However, it never ceases to amaze me either that so many people think the animals we eat appear out of nothing!. But, the truth is the animals eat too!. And they eat a lot!. Most often they eat what humans would eat or food produced on land we could use to grow other things and that includes natural habitat for these species that have been knocked out of their normal bio-diverse homes!.

Here's the deal!. Not including the land they are raised on which is usually a rural area away from prying eyes that might object to the conditions, animals raised for meat, eggs and dairy consume huge amounts of the foods that require intensive harvesting!. As much as 16 times as much as a human would consume!. So, eating meat causes many times more animals to die in the growing and harvesting of the food they would eat than in producing the plant-based food a human would eat directly!. Essentially they are the Hummer of protein production!. We are using the animals to convert perfectly usable protein for us into less healthy versions along with all the environmental degradations and many other harmful effects that come along with it!.

Currently about 70% of arable land is used to raise crops for feeding production animals!. The world continues to eat as it has, trying to catch up to the consumption levels of the United States/North America but we just don't have that much world left to grow the crops the animals would need but, we could easily feed at least 10 billion people on a veg diet!.

As it is now huge swaths of the rain forests in South America are being decimated to grow genetically engineered soy and corn to feed animals around the world including in China!. A dry forest, the Cerrado which is nearly as diverse as the Amazon forest has been disappearing in the Brazilian state of Mato Grasso to grow endless miles of soy on farms as big as 40,000 acres each!. All those species that lived there are lost, both plants and animals!. This doesn't include the incidental deaths that occur such as from the 143+ dead zones created from the animal manures from the huge Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) and the run-off of petro-chemicals needed to grow the industrial crops that feed them which cause huge dead zones in the oceans all over the world!.

As to humans eating soy!? Well, most of the soy grown is for the animals!. Soy oil (aka "vegetable" oil) is a by-product of animal feed!. In fact, most soy products are a by-product of the meat industries!. 85% plus of the world-wide soy crops is going to animal feed with a good deal of the remainder being used for many industrial products such as lubrication, biofuels, candles, inks, etc!. and relatively little going directly to food (about 6% most of that being consumed in Asia)!.

====
Meat production took more land (6 to 17 times as much), water (4!.4 to 26 times), fossil fuels (6 to 20 times), and biocides (a lumped-together category of pesticides and chemicals used in processing -- 6 times as much)!. In fact, meat lost in every category!. When processing and transport is factored in to the equation, the difference becomes less extreme, but it's still there!. Meat-based diets use about twice as many environmental resources as soy-based diets!. Despite concerns about deforestation and genetic engineering, soy appears to be the winner here!.

There's a lot of soy being used to prop up meat products too so those who aren't vegetarian quite possibly are consuming more soy than their plant-eating counterparts:

Then there is the corn fed to animals!.!.!.

But yeah, the more local and independent you can get with your food the more likely it was grown and harvested in responsible and sustainable ways!.

Try Local Harvest, Sustainable Table and a few others to find better alternatives to the Standard Super Market fare:Www@FoodAQ@Com

There are some really responsible companies out there too such as Organic Valley (the best soy milk ever & OJ -- no slave labor), and Eden Foods among them; Food Alliance is another good resource:

Maggie, it's definitely too bad that animals are killed harvesting grains and vegetables!.

But it's silly for people to use this as proof that vegetarians are just as "guilty" as meat-eaters!.

If an animal dies during a grain harvest, that is an UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE of the harvest!.

If a cow dies in a slaughterhouse, it is a DELIBERATE ACT!. In fact, it's the whole point, isn't it!?

It's a very important difference!. Share it with your class!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't think they can help killing animals, it's just the way it goes!.

I would just try to feel better about the fact that less animals are inadvertently killed for your veggies, than are killed for meat (obviously! You're eating the meat! When you eat veggies it's just random animals being killed!.!.!. you get far more food!)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have experienced human death!.!.!. been in two wars!.!. Vietnam and Korea!.!.!.!. about the animals!.!.!. its not that many!.!. the animals here the combines coming and the vacate that space!.!.!. as for statistics because I think the person that told you is a little wet!.!.!. I worked on a farm and we harvested wheat, corn and hay!.!.!. and I can truthfully tell you I never killed or have I ever seen any killed!.!.!. I have seen cats (yes cats) killing rabbits and birds!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You need to realize this is in no way a valid arguement against veg*nism!.

Cows and chickens don't subsist on air and water!. You use a lot more plants and grains feeding livestock on a typical diet than you do in a diet where you eat only vegetables!.

A omni diet requires plant food for roughly 100 organisms!.
A vegan diet requires plant food for ONE!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you could buy from someone that is still using traditional harvesting ways!. ask the amish if they will sell you wheat!.

anything that grows on trees or in dry areas!. that would be fruits and nuts, like almonds!.
http://www!.youtube!.com/watch!?v=VlpCDlLZU!.!.!.

you would need to replace almost everything!. whats in your soap!? palm oil!? good, fruits from oil palms are harvested by hand!. its the same for coconut oil!. olive oil is harvested like almonds!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Nope, not really!.
Did they mention that ground up fish, cows and chickens are often used as cheap fertilizer!?
That's why I gave up veganism for animals but rather for my health!.
The only way to prevent it happening is growing your own!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wow, I've been saying this to you vegetarians for years!.

You're not going to get away from injuring/killing animals that take shelter in corn/bean fields, unless they do it the old fashioned Amish way, harvesting by hand!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

not sure!. but organic poses less risk of killing them since they don't use pesticides!. they may use humane traps!.!. or have some sort of other method!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
