Vegans: Why don't you eat meat?!

Mostly. I just don't believe animals are here for our use. They have their own place in the world. That place isn't on our plate.
Also for health reasons. I've lost a few pounds after going vegan. My skin cleared up and my nails are stronger. It has opened me up to a whole new world of food.
Primarily because I dislike the environmental effects of meat production, although that is not the only reason.
According to a 2006 report by the Livestock, Environment And Development Initiative, the livestock industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food contributes on a "massive scale" to air and water pollution, land degradation, climate change, and loss of biodiversity. The initiative concluded that "the livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global."[1] In 2006 FAO estimated that meat industry contributes 18% of all emissions of greenhouse gasses. This figure was challenged in 2009 by two World-Watch researchers who estimated a 51% minimum,[2] however this paper has not been peer reviewed.[3]
Animals fed on grain need more water than grain crops.[4] In tracking food animal production from the feed through to the dinner table, the inefficiencies of meat, milk and egg production range from a 4:1 energy input to protein output ratio up to 54:1.[4] The result is that producing animal-based food is typically much less efficient than the harvesting of grains, vegetables, legumes, seeds and fruits for direct human consumption.[4]
Relatedly, the production and consumption of meat and other animal products is associated with the clearing of rainforests, resource depletion, air and water pollution, land and economic inefficiency, species extinction, and other environmental harms.

I believe animals are sentient beings who deserve respect. They are not here for us to use, and its not right to cause them pain, especially when we don't even need the meat.
So I'm against animal slaughter anyways, even in humane conditions, and when you look at how most animals are raised on factory farms, its a double no.
I don't eat dairy and eggs because of dairy's links to the veal industry, the killing of male chicks, and because even the most humane farms usually send the hens/cows to slaughter once production declines.
(I know the question didn't explicitly ask this, but usually people start with 'why don't you eat meat' and then once I answer that follow it up with 'but why not dairy/eggs', so I thought you might be curious :))

My main reason is that I don't believe that we should kill (or pay others to kill) animals unless absolutely necessary, especially if those animals were "conventionally" farmed. To me, pleasure isn't a good enough reason. I am lucky enough to have a choice. I can get adequate nutrition and eat a balanced diet without meat. Not everyone is that lucky, which is too bad. I'd rather someone ate meat than starved to death. In a perfect world, fresh fruits and vegetables would be cheap and easy to get. Ditto whole grains. As it is, refined crap is cheaper. Bummer. There's something seriously wrong with a world where it costs more to make your own food from scratch than it does to pick up MacDonald's every day.
I became a vegetarian because of animal cruelty. I watched a video from peta.org and it made me feel so sad to see those animals and how they suffer for us. that's why i stopped eating animals!
I then learned about the negative effects of eating them... here are some facts from the eating meat..
. Meat is very high in fat, especially saturated fat which is the second worst fat (after trans fat) for our bodies and cardiovascular system.
. Meat is very high in cholesterol and contains its own diseases
. Meat produces carcinogenic compounds when cooked (These are called heterocyclic amines and they get produced when animal flesh is cooked, especially at high temperatures.
. Meat increases chances of colon cancer and it is hard on the digestive system - Meat takes a long time to pass through the intestines, where during this time it putrefies. Putrefaction produces toxins and amines that accumulate in the liver, kidneys and large intestines, destroys bacterial cultures and causes degeneration of the lining of the small intestine.
. Meat carries the highest risk of bacterial contamination.
. Meat contains synthetic hormones and antibiotics.
. Meat is very dense in calories
. Meat eating results in killing billions of animal each year- billion animals are killed each year by the meat, egg and dairy industries.
Thanks for asking ! :)
I am a vegetarian. I dont eat meat because eating dead bodies is gross.
Also, the conditions in slaughter houses are disgusting, and those animals are basically living in hell until their throats are cut and they are still alive for hours riggling in pain while they bleed out hanging upside down.
Admittedly this is my 2nd week being a vegetarian; I must say that I have no regrets. The transition wasn't too difficult for me, because my diet consisted of "meat free" week days. I would only eat meat on the weekends. Finally I decided to take the plunge and fuse "meat free" week days into "meat free" weekends. Not only do I feel better, I also feel more in charge of my dietary habits; not following the American status quo.
Edit:
I don't eat meat because of a video entitled "Meet your meat." It's a very disturbing and gruesome video, showing what "really" happens to animals, prior to them being served up as food for the masses. The irony of it all; we as human beings are supposed to be the most intelligent of all earth's creatures or species, after watching "meet your meat" I have doubts. ( o _ 0 )
My main reason is because I did NOT enjoy the taste of meat to begin with. When I did eat meat, it was just fast food, so health was another reason I don't eat meat.
EDIT: I read an answer where she said her nails grew stronger, same thing happened to me, but I'm a vegetarian. I can now grow my nails twice as long as an average length nail. It isn't really much of a plus, but it's great to freak people out. :D
i feel like it's animal cruelty. i can live a healthy life by not ending innocent creatures lives.
life is such a valuable thing, i would never want to end an animals life.
vegetarian since i was 4. i'm 21 now. :)
Ethics plays a role also, animals now live in boxed areas inside factories, and pose health problems, some are still able to roam the fields, called 'free-range' meat, if that goes I would probably consider becoming vegan.
i respect their decision of becoming vegan if they have an ideal or something decided by themselves, the ones i really hate are most of the young vegans who are vegans because they saw some peta propaganda, and because of that they are vegans
I don't want to eat meat, nor do I need to eat meat to live a happy and healthy life. That's reason enough for me to be a vegetarian.
Vegetarian since birth
I worked on a pig/dairy farm 14 years ago and saw how the animals suffered just in the day to day running of the place. So that was that.
Because I have no right to allow other living beings to be tortured, mutilated, and eventually murdered just to feed, clothe or entertain me.
vegan :D
I never really liked any meat to begin with and I didn't use things like milk, eggs, cheese or honey etc. that much anyway so I thought 'why not?'.
Because I really hate factory farms and refuse to eat animals who were tortured their entire lives.
I don't see the point in eating animals. If you don't need meat to live (and live well), why make an animal die for your dinner?
