I am starting a diet that is closer to the natural source what about?!

Question: I am starting a diet that is closer to the natural source what about?
lettuce, brocolli and cauliflower? Can I buy non-organic at a lower price at say Safeway, Food4Less and expect it to be chemically free or non GMO? I have been to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods and bought organic apples and bananas. Is it really that important that the label say organic? I would like to eat salads, can I get away with buying a head of lettuce for 79cents or do I need to get the $1.50 variety? Any help would be great. Thanks

Hi Chris,
It's a bit difficult to give you a 'nutshell' answer, because there are so many factors affecting the 'truth' about what food labelling says these days (e.g. 'organic' can have 3 levels of 'organicness' - and 'free range' can simply mean that the hens are allowed a couple of hours access to a grassed area each day!!!)

Short answer:

* re GMO, etc. the link below has info about Australian (are you Australian?) food retailers - it's a brilliant little booklet - but you can also search for retailers / foods online

http://www.truefood.org.au/truefoodguide…

* if you can grow it yourself and eat it straight after you pick it that would be ideal
* organic (if it is truly organic!) is better - I'd rather ingest some natural bugs and let my immune system deal with them than swallowing chemical residue and tax my liver. I'm afraid these days, I only believe it's organic if I can buy it from the person who actually grew/farmed it

OVERALL, though - you will always be better off if you buy the ingredients (organic or not, GMO or not) and actually put the meal together yourself - cooking seems to be becoming a dying art in favour of processed meals and processed components (e.g. pasta sauces), the ingredients of which usually read like a chemistry lesson, rather than food.
