Check out this article from Runner's World on motivation.

It explains the different types, what works best and why. It has been found that goals like losing x amount of weight for a specific reason tends to be one of the least successful.

Another suggestion - if you feel you aren't getting anywhere, set small goals. Take for example running. People get frustrated because they aren't running far enough or as fast as others and get discouraged. Keeping track of small victories, like running a minute longer than you could, that extra kilometer, etc are small things, but add up.

You also need to set reasonable expectations. Its frustrating when you work hard to lose weight, but don't see much difference. You need to remember it doesn't happen overnight.

Most importantly, find something you LIKE to do. You aren't going to stick with any exercise program that you have to drag yourself through. I can't stand treadmills. I do everything I can to avoid them. Tvs, music, magazines don't help. I do enjoy running outside, so I do that instead.

Oh and keep track of what you eat. Many people have no idea how many calories they actually consume. Be honest. People who track their food intake are typically more successful at weight loss.
I like myplate.com (except that if you go over your goal intake, it highlights it red. Grr. Makes me mad)

Remember...it's easier to gain weight than to lose it. If you feel like your getting nowhere think of it as a good thing. Obviously your expectation of an instant result is never gonna happen so you could either give up, watch matters get worse in front of your eyes and never forgive yourself OR you could keep at it, not get worse, be healthy on the inside and in time see the benefits on the outside. There will be a period at first where you lose weight rapidly and then even though your still exercising the same all of a sudden your not losing as much weight as before. Truth is you got to keep stepping your game up to maintain losing weight. Your motivation to do this would be to want to do it for yourself...in other words to aim for the benefits YOU can feel and enjoy on the INSIDE for a healthier lifestyle and not aiming for the benefits OTHER people see on the OUTSIDE.

Have a concrete goal in mind. Something like:
"I want to fit into those pants in the back of my closet that don't fit anymore."
or:
"I want to look good in a bikini in time for beach season."

Pick something that is meaningful to you.

It's also easier if you have someone to exercise with. If you have a gym buddy, then you are accountable to each other. If it's just you, it's easy to blow off going to the gym. But if you have a friend to go with, then it's harder to blow off.

You can only do it for you, so only you can motivate yourself. Think of it as a lifestyle change and you are moving forward in a different direction. Take it a day at a time and forgive yourself if you slip one day but do not make slipping a habit. There are different arguments out there as to exercise or not to exercise while dieting. You kinda have to weed through what people will tell you and do the routine where you see the most results, even if it is dieting alone. Everyone one has different body types and some have medical problems which stall weight loss. Our bodies do respond differently to different diets and exercise routines. Find out what works for you and stick with it, just make sure it is healthy for you. Good luck to you.

Healthy food is cheaper than ready meals and take aways. So eating healthy and skinny will save you money. I counted out that a soup I made myself gave me about 5 portions, having used just 5 potatoes, a carrot, a stock cube, some other veg and a creme fraiche pot, cost me 35 pence per portion.
So eat a soup for lunch and shed weight , saving you say £ 25 a day for five days if lets say you normally spend about a fiver on some pizza or sandwich place for lunch.

If you are not full up , add some barley, rice, whole wheat pasta, sesame seeds, linseed to the home made soup. That will add more fibre and keep you fuller for longer.

Your goal shouldn't be too generic. If it is then you will not focus and the goal is too vague and far away. Have a specific goal as then it's something concrete. Keep the impetus.

So my example is one of the small goals you can have. The money you will save , do actively set up a standing order in your bank to your saving account. Try for this week. You can't eat soup every day. So find out how you can save money next week. Make it different.
Say buy a whole chicken, grill that in the oven. Have a chicken breast for the first day with a salad. Cheap and skinny. Then you have one chicken breast, two legs and some more left. That will make you three more lunches. And as chicken is still good to eat for three days, you have saved say at least £ 15 for those three days if again, you normally spend a fiver for lunch. A chicken cost what , £3.50 ? £ 3.50 spread out for three days lunch meal...Need I say anymore?
You can have noodle soup with the last bit of the chicken, oh and don't forget- make your own stock of the chicken carcass! You can make chicken sandwich in brown bread for one breakfast or lunch and chicken leftovers in your wild rice for another dinner. The world of skinny , good , filling foods are endless!

The money you have saved- the goal is for example a trip abroad, beach holiday where you have to wear a bikini and show your figure off, a nice dress, nice shoes, a deposit for a flat, a dog - more exercise haha, what ever is something you want. But as I said, do a day or week at a time. Look forward , and make sure you are never bored with eating cheap and healthy! Just do it !

watch a bunch of movies which have beautiful slim women acting in it; cut out a picture of a slim fit or well toned woman from a mag and cut out her face, then stick on your face which you cut out of a printed photo (making sure the face is the same size proportion to the cut-out) and that will give you a picture of how great you'll look. Tell yourself that you could be the next bond girl, and visualize it.. Works for me. I lost 3kg this past two months after years of giving up.

keep a picture of the body that you want in your wallet and look at it when you want motivation. otherwise motivating music if you are exercising or have a purpose for the exercise ie - walking a dog , going shopping (!!) to do exercise without making it feel like a chore

my motivation is clothes. as far as getting motivated, set your mind to it and don't do the same exercise every day. switch up your routine by going to the gym for machines, swimming, taking aerobic classes and weight lifting. good luck!
