Question: A BIG problem I'm having as a Vegan?
I have my meal plan set and I am getting all of the required nutrients from foods, but vitamin B12 is a big problem. I do NOT like getting my vitamin B12 intake from pill forms, so what else can I do ?

Breakfast Cereals

Soya is high protein and low fat. Since soya can mimic the texture of meat it is often used as the foundation for meat substitutes. Quron Not is a mycoprotein that's often combined with egg white to make non-meat burgers, fillets or sausages.

Tofu is often fortified with vitamin B12 and is also a good source of calcium and protein. Tofu is made by fermenting soy milk and is similar to cheese.


Soy Milk and Non-Dairy Margarine
Soy milk is sometimes fortified with vitamin B12, according to the International Vegetarian Union. It's important to read the nutrition label as not all soy milks contain this nutrient.
Certain butter substitutes such as vegetable and sunflower margarines are often fortified with vitamin B12.

Don't listen to that nonesense. B12 is from bacteria, you can culture is naturally in Kombucha tea. Taking pills to ingest supplements is debatable...so why risk it when you can get it in the foods you eat? Most people eat cereal, most cereal is fortified with B12. No pills, shots, or scifi food there...



Most fortified soy milks have 50% of the RDV of B12 in just one cup. You can get soy milk in many flavors if you don't like it plain. Most rice milks have 25% in one cup. Seaweed, sea vegetables, nutritional yeast, and marmite are also excellent sources of B12.

Alot of soya milk contains vitamin b12 along with cereals and yeast as well so I wouldn't worry. It isn't a hard ingredient to find in your every day food items :-)



The easiest way is to drink Silk chocolate soy milk. One cup of it contains 50% of vitamin b12, therefore 2 cups will be your daily intake.

You could try real food? Panfried beef liver, Simmered turkey giblets, Braunschweiger pork liver sausage, Raw pacific oysters, Cooked Alaska king crab, Raw clams, Simmered chicken giblets,
Swiss cheese, Beef (uncooked sirloin), Egg (raw, whole chicken's egg), Whole cow's milk & Raw chicken breast are ALL rich sources of B-12......B-12, BTW, all comes from animal guts, even the "pill form" has to derive it from the original bacterial source in animal guts...

(If you eat any food products that contain rice, wheat, oatmeal, bran or any other grain, you aren't really a "vegan" anyway...without soaking those crops in so much pesticide they would die, they cannot be grown & harvested without also harvesting lots of insects, so the bugs get ground into the final product...and insects are not "vegan"....)



B12 is not found in any plant food. It comes from eggs, meat, milk. To get it on a strict vegan diet, you'll need to take pills, get shots or eat highly processed foods that have had it added.

I'm sure you're going to get responses assuring you that you don't need B12 or that if you eat dirty food you'll get B12. All untrue. B12 comes from cobalt in the soil. The grasses pick it up out of the soil, animals eat the grasses and the bacteria in their gut convert it to B12 which they store in their flesh/milk/eggs. We get B12 when we eat those. We do make B12, but it's in a part of our digestive system where our bodies can't use it.

ADDED: To dna: Do you think VEGAN Dr. Jack Norris is an idiot or liar? He says very clearly that there is NO plant source of B12 and a vegan should supplement. As for your magic elixir, from the Mayo Clinic:

"In short, there's not good evidence that Kombucha tea delivers on its health claims. At the same time, several cases of harm have been reported. Therefore, until definitive studies quantify the risks and benefits of Kombucha tea, it's prudent to avoid it."

There's no scientific proof it contains B12 and since much if it is bottled in garages, to depend on it as a reliable source of B12 would be stupid.
