Vegans; Should I discontinue representing the vegan community?!

Question: Vegans; Should I discontinue representing the vegan community?
That's a fancy way of saying Should I stop telling people I'm vegan?

Basically I am voluntarily skinny (aiming to lose more weight too) and very pale naturally. I don't eat much good food because I avoid anything high in calories or with a lot of ingredients (too many ingredients makes calorie calculations harder). I feel like I'm a horrible representation of vegans and I genuinely feel guilty for that. I know vegans get enough crap and misunderstanding as it is, without me being all thin and pale and only eating boring foods. Should I just stop telling people I'm vegan so they don't think badly of the rest of you?

Answers:

You're fine; you shouldn't be ashamed to tell people what you are.
If you yourself feel uncomfortable telling other people you're vegan, fine, but I'm vegan and could care less; I think vegans tend to not give a crap what people think (well, otherwise we wouldn't be vegan :)).

Like clockwork said... I represent myself.
It's like saying another person is giving me a bad reputation because they're unhealthy and a runner or an italian or something; I give myself my own reputation.

I'm sorry, but it does sound like you have an eating disorder. Please get help, really do- its not worth it.

I only tell people I'm vegan when they need to know. You aren't a horrible representation, but it's not healthy to try to lose more weight if you are already skinny. Being skinny won't make you happy, but accepting yourself will.

I think that's just a fancy way of saying your have an eating disorder.

I am vegan myself but don't care what other vegans do. No one represents me but me.

haha I think I'm a bad example because I'm fat (and angry).
But I don't care what people think.

keep telling people you're vegan. When people hear that they natually feel guilty because they are part of the problem (face it, everyone knows how animals are raised/slaughtered they just dont want to make a change) so will naturally turn to either asking questions/defending themselves. Its important to be an ambassador of your lifestyle.
Remember that vegetarianism/veganism gets beaten down publicly by cattlemen's association and the like because vegans/vegetarians are making them lose business.

You are NOT a horrible person!
You're one of the best. I mean, look at those fatty meat eaters that are killing animals. NO LIVING CREATURE SHOULD DIE FOR YOUR FRICKIN' TASTE BUDS! People out there are beating up animals, and doing things that make me so...once, I saw this video on animal cruelty and I slapped the guy on the T.V. for bein such an @$$!
So, yeah. You're an epic person and if anyone says you're not...THEY'RE WRONG.

Hi No chance . . .

Your interest in telling people about your eating preference should be on a "need to know" basis. If you're skinny and pale, there may be some other reasons for it. Just because you are a vegan, doesn't mean you need to be pale.

Even being on a vegan diet, you can have color in your skin and be healthy.

My son, Brian, has got food allergies and he has had to be very careful in what he eats too. I remember the time when he was 3 that he was on a doctor approved beer and pretzel diet for a while because that was all he could keep on his stomach. (His older brother and sisters got really jealous because they were teens and the 3 yr old got the beer. LOL)

Anyway, you can let people know when they have a need to know. That's your choice.

You may want to check out Brian's website. He has found a number of cookbooks that help people with their food sensitivities. He has a section on vegan cooking as well . . . link below.

One of the books he carries is by Vlada Divine who talks about a way to be vegan and be healthy at the same time. Kristen Suzanne was a bodybuilder and though she is vegan, certainly doesn't look unhealthy. See if these cookbooks might help.

You can always sign up for his newsletter if you'd like to know more about how people deal with food sensitivities.

Oh, if you're looking for a way to stay healthy, I work with a company who provides an easy way to keep fiber in your diet, maintain a weight (but you call yourself skinny so you should only consider this for maintenance, not weight loss) and be healthy. That NuVitae link is below too.

Hope this helps.
