My kids are aged 8, 6 and 3 and were raised as vegetarian from birth, as both myself and the father were vegetarian (I'm vegan). We haven't gone into huge detail about the meat industry but have explained to them that we think it isn't very nice to kill an animal to eat it when we don't need to. I find they ask more questions as they get older which I answer honestly but without graphic detail. They seem to 100% agree that vegetarianism is the way to go and I have heard them trying to convert friends/strangers in the supermarket!
If ever they go to birthday parties I let the parents know beforehand and it has never been a problem. They apparently automatically check things anyway! If they did decide they wanted to try meat I'd ask them why they wanted to, explain my disappointment, but ultimately it would be their choice. I just want them to have an informed choice. That's all you can do really. Good luck. :)

My son (he's 9) tried some beef on pizza at a birthday party, and some turkey at school once, around Thanksgiving. He didn't care for it.
I told him it was okay to try it if he wanted to, but before that I made sure he had actually seen a cow, a pig and a chicken in real life.
