VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — An organization that fights animal abuse is calling the slaughter of 100 sled dogs by an outdoor adventure company in British Columbia a bloodbath and police are investigating.

The British Columbia SPCA's manager of animal cruelty investigations said Monday an Outdoor Adventures Whistler employee was told to cull the dogs.

Marcie Moriarty says some dogs were shot, while others' throats were slit before their bodies were pitched into a mass grave.

Vancouver radio station CKNW radio is reporting that the company expected more sledding business in an anticipated post-Olympics tourism boom. But the boom never materialized and the sled dogs were killed last April.

That is just so sad. I have a german shepherd and I love him to bits! I agree, totally uncalled for and unnecessary. They could have at least TRIED to rehome them or something. I have a different perspective for animals slaughtered for food, however. Food is never wasted. Also, people care more about dogs because they feel closer to them. If I had a cow which I considered family instead of my dog, then I'd have raised a protest as well about cows. Also, there's no other use for a cow. They just eat grass, all you can do is stare at them. Dogs, on the other hand, provide entertainment, love, attention, devotion and are very loyal and trusting. How can you bear to betray and slaughter an animal who loves and trusts you so much and is like a member of your own family? Never. Cows are a different matter. All that I've seen them do is walk around, graze, and make manure. Period. And I only watch them from afar, they could be moving pictures, for all I know. How could that possibly draw compassion from me? Also, most of us just see beef on our plate and know that it comes from cow. We don't really think about their deaths that much while eating. Vegetarians won't understand, we eat without a second thought and only comment on its preparation and seasoning. It's a sad fact of life. If you're looking to start on animal cruelty, start on the animals which are closer to people's hearts, leave the farm animal alone. People need to eat meat, it's not optional and it's better to eat abundant farm animals than hunt possibly endangered species or start eating their own pets. The best thing you can do is make sure they are raised nicely, had a good life, and are killed in a humane way. Many farm animals in factory farms lack even that.

And as for the dogs, I guess it's because nobody's even heard about it. If they did, there'd be an uproar from all the animal lovers and dog owners of the world. If could, I would've sued their butts off.

Every year millions of healthy dogs around the world are killed in "shelters" by groups who claim to have the animal's interests at heart. It is criminal the way we use and abuse non-human animals. Top me it is no more unnecessary to kill dogs than cows, pigs, or convicted murderers.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I am pretty sure people are raising hell about it....
What makes you think they aren't?

And that is one isolated case. Cows are routinely killed.
Just wondering why it is so offensive to cut the throat of a dog, but not a cow????

This is a very sad. It is totally uncalled for and ridiculous. I hope the dog killers are thrown in jail, or better yet, prison. Awful.

It amazes me that people find it acceptable to kill any animals - People only seem concerned though when pets get harmed and not animals such as pigs, cows etc,

I'm guessing it's due to insufficient publicity.
At least this is the first I've heard of it.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with you. I am a big dog lover as well and to me this is horrible. It always makes me really mad when dogs are abused. But slitting cows throats, injecting them with hormones, taking away there babies to make veal, is not abuse? FYI, some cows are also thrown like that to be forgotten b/c they're too sick. Its unnecessary for most of us in a developed country to eat carcasses. No one needs meat to survive, most of us just eat it out of pleasure. Why do people discriminate some animals while love others? At first thought I read, "Why DO people raise more hell about this and less about killing a cow...." Trust me, I am big dog lover but abuse is abuse and it doesn't matter if its a pig, chicken, dog or cat etc.

British explorer Ernest Shackleton and his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition became trapped, and ultimately killed their sled dogs for food. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was known to have eaten sled dogs during his expedition to the South Pole. By eating some of the sled dogs, he required less human or dog food, thus lightening his load. When comparing sled dogs to ponies as draught animals he also notes:

"...there is the obvious advantage that dog can be fed on dog. One can reduce one's pack little by little, slaughtering the feebler ones and feeding the chosen with them. In this way they get fresh meat. Our dogs lived on dog's flesh"

Dog meat has been a source of food in some areas of China from around 500 BC,

In South Korea (officially the Republic of Korea), dog meat is eaten nationwide and all year round, although it is most commonly eaten during summer

There is pleanty of outragious behavour around. Nothing can be done

Dogs are almost family in most homes, even with working dogs, as the owner of 7 coonhounds, Yes I do use them as working dogs, but they are also family. Cows however ARE on the food chain, and yes I love beef, and even raise my own as well. long story short come after my dogs like that and you'll meet mr.smith and mr.wesson. in a copper .44 magnum suit, But butchering a cow isn't that big a deal, gotta put meat in the freezer somehow

Living in the south on a farm all my life

Cuz sled dogs are lousy eating.
