Are you referring to the way that PETA and some extremists are completely against people having pets? It's not like every single vegan agrees on everything; there is no "vegan guideline" for something like this. Personally, I think it would be a bit silly to be ok with keeping pets, but not putting them on a leash when they are outside. If I had a dog that I was walking out in public, I would put them on a leash. Today I saw a guy whose dog almost got hit by a car, because he was not using a leash and he was unable to get the dog to listen. Then the idiot yelled at the dog for not listening right away!

Law says you have to, vegan or no. It's for public safety. And I think they would use a leash, though they'd stay away from leather collars, leashes, and other dog accessories. I have a vegetarian friend who won't even touch leather purses and wallets, even though she loves the art and designs on them. But the will use a leash. If you don't use a leash, then you won't be able to walk the dog, right? I personally think that being taken out, even tied to a leash, would be better than being stuck in the house all day. I think others would agree on that.
I'm not even sure that vegans would keep dogs, though they might, if they got it from a shelter, they'd take one in as part of their family. Some vegans, however, believe that animals should be free and not tied down with an "owner".

Of course I leash my dog when walking her in town. I'm not about to let her off-leash next to a busy road with idiot drivers.

At the dog park or at the farm? She gets to run around to her little heart's content.

There's nothing ethically wrong with leashing a dog. Do you object to parents putting seatbelts on their children? No... sometimes, something somewhat "unnatural" is the safest way to function in modern society.

Hi,
Little confused as to the ethical element of this. Leashes don't have to be leather and they don't hurt the dog unless you yank it. There is no ethical dilemma.

it's against the law over here to have a dog off a leash, so yeah.. and you don't want the dog getting run over by a car or anything. o_o

also, worry about your own ethics.

only if they are not irresponsible

Yea you have too, some ppl are afraid of dogs.
