It's illegal to sell horse meat for human consumption in the United States.
Besides... with all of the phenylbutazone, acepromazine, ivermectin, moxidectin, banamine, etc. etc. etc. that we give to horses on a regular basis in this country, their meat is technically unfit for *any* human consumption, in this country or otherwise.
OK....I'm going to assume you are not joking...& I'm not going to touch the is it "okay" thing...
Horse-meat is mostly eaten in europe/asia (the areas that in the past horses were eaten when they were killed in battle to sustain the soldiers) or in areas so poor they eat everything.
It is legal to eat horse-meat in the US, but it must be imported as it is illegal to slaughter horses for human consumption in the US (that makes no sense but that is the typical government for you). Also 90% of medications in the US used for horses are labeled not to be used on animals intended for human consumption (sucks to be the people who eat those poor horses shipped to Canada or Mexico to be processed).
That being said....if you do eat a horse, you better sneak it into your home and never let anyone know, as you will disgust everyone who hears about it. It is just a cultural taboo in the US, and very few will ever accept it. And as said...you will probably be getting a US horse that was shipped to Mexico and shipped back, and even if you don't have a problem with eating a horse as such....as far as I'm concerned the meat is contaminated by A: The stress and inhumane conditions used to ship the horses to Mexico, B: The various US drugs used on horses that are not approved for human consumption.
I'm betting it is illegal in the US and eating horse makes a lot of people angry, even meateaters for one reason: a horse is a companion animal similar to a dog and a cat. For years they've transported us places (before cars) and we formed a bond with them.
I heard (whether it's true or not) that some places in France it's common to eat horse meat. However I heard that a long time ago and don't know whether (assuming it's true) they still do or not.
Horse meat is not sold commercially in the US for human consumption. If you can find someone killing and processing horses for their own consumption, there's no reason not to eat it. I've never had it, but have heard it's very good. It's a pricy delicacy in France.
There used to be three horse slaughter plants in the US where horses were killed humanely, under USDA inspection, and the meat shipped to Europe. But animal rights people got those plants closed. So horses are shipped sometimes thousands of miles to kill plants that don't operate under such humane conditions. Or with transportation charges so high, they just starve to death because their owners can't take care of them any more (being out of a job, etc.).
The first, and only, time I ever had a piece of horse meat was in Haiti. I didn't realize it was horse meat till after I had eaten it. (We were staying in a B&B and there was a set meal.) I asked our server what it was as I knew it didn't taste like beef. Actually it was quite tasty though I sincerely doubt I'd ever order it on purpose no matter where I was.
If it's legal here in the US I don't know for sure, but I don't believe it is.
They actually made it illegal in the U.S. to slaughter and consume horses in 2006. American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 857). “To prevent the slaughter of horses in and from the United States for human consumption by prohibiting the trade and transport of horseflesh and live horses intended for human consumption, and for other purposes.”
Oh yea sure, it is okay... NOT. why is it posted in "Vegeterian /Vegan" Oh God! I hope you are not veggie when you think about that because we become veggies for a reason. To try stop eating animal products , so animals don't have to die to be on plate . Probably you are not deciated enough , might you should watch how animal die on video. Might it will not affect you anyway. Horse is only a pet not food! STAYYYYY away from any kind pets , if you get hungry
Depends where you are, here in France i have it every Thursday as "Steak Hache cheval avec frits et oef." very nice. It tastes a little stronger than beef but less fatty.

Sure it is! Horses just poop all day and smell bad so you may as well eat them.
It's fine to eat horse. Somewhat popular where I first ate it. A bit stringy and very little fat.
