What are your thoughts on PETA?!

Question: What are your thoughts on PETA?
I'm just wondering if the stereotype that most vegetarians (and vegans) are PETA fans is true.

So... what do you like/dislike about them? Do you feel they are reasonable and not way too extreme? And if you answered the second question yes, are you legally insane?

Bonus Question: Does anyone know when this section is busiest?

Answers:

I totally, with every fiber of my being, LOATHE PETA. I am by NO means into neglecting of animals, but PETA takes everything WAY too far. They have a campaign on youtube.com called Live and Let Live, and sometime ago we find out that 62 perfectly healthy pups and kits are murdered in the back of the van. In 2009 PETA only saved at most 65 animals while the rest, 2,301 (there was a total of 2,366) were killed. I watched their video of slaughter houses, almost EVERY SINGLE THING on there happens to be a lie! Chickens nerves with still "shock" each other, making it appear living even though they are truly dead, this happens with pigs, goats, sheep and cows. Chickens are not normally crowed in to 2' 4' cages that are no more than 3' high. Not only is that bad for the chickens but it is terrible financially, hens lay 1-2 eggs every 36 hours, in colder weather it's 1-2, 3 if lucky, per week. pigs have enough room to do everything in their fairing rooms or sows in some cases, to do everything EXCEPT squish their babies, which is the point for the smaller, but still manageable, "cases". Cows, pigs, etc. can be very stubborn, and will sometimes have to be moved by being pushed, convair belts and sometimes even motorized vehicles. Pigs don't stick to the side of their transportation, which is always very ventilated, you know unless they urinate and lean in their urine whilst it dries (gross but happens, plus that is how, if there isn't water or mud to lay in, they will cool themselves off in their urine because they do not have sweat glands) otherwise they will sleep on their truck ride. And why in Sam heck would farmers beat their pigs with metal rods, that would hurt not only the product but what it is worth. Farmers, also do not smash the tinier piglets onto concrete, they sell them, even though it isn't that pig of profit (they are priced upon lb) so a profit is a profit, they wouldn't kill a profit. Also what's with the whole "Your Mommy Kills Animals" or "Your Daddy Kills Animals" comic books, with pretty disturbing covers. Do they want kids to think their parents chop rabbits heads off? Then they will tell this to kids when they are walking home from school. They pay thousands and thousands of $$ to arsonists, to light up research utilities, universities that conduct on medical research, etc. They payed somebody $70,000 to set a university research facility on fire, then when he went to prison, he taught other guys how to make bombs, that is what PETA called, " A fine young man." What if that research facility finally found a cure for AIDS just as PETA set it on fire? Thousands upon thousands of lives ruined! I do not like the idea of animal testing but think about it if one rat was how they found a cure, then those kids could help more people and even more animals, and just keep going like that. Also, PETA said they would use any method necessary (well maybe not ANY) but they have attacked crowds of people, with metal gates of all things! I so totally, despise them, I would advise you to do the same unless you wanna give your money to an association like that.

Also they make millions, at least 75% of those millions are used to advertise, but they don't even have one stink'n shelter. People for the Ethnical Treatment of Animals my butt...they say the best thing to do is bring a stray into an animal shelter and have it euthanized.

BQ: Probably, late at night on Saturday's, Sunday's and sometimes Monday's.

The video PETA "Lies" on youtube is PETA's version of slaughter houses with cut in by a guy/gal that actually works in the meat business who tells facts about how PETA is making BIG exagerations about slaughter homes, while I do not condone slaughter homes, most are not as cruel as you think, but PETA wants you to think they are.

You can look on google images for the disturbing pics of the covers of the My Mommy or My Daddy comic books.

There are tons of vegetarians and vegans that are not PETA fans. In fact, most vegans/vegetarians I know aren't hippies who have to tell everyone who's not vegetarian/vegan that they're wrong, evil and going to burn in hell. Most of them have their reasons for not eating meat or animal by-products and don't hound you about your personal choice if you do.

I like some of what PETA is trying to do. But their own trying to demonize non-vegetarians/vegans really doesn't do much for me. Sometimes reading their articles or seeing their ads makes me want to eat that much more meat as a big F YOU.

The myth that veg*ns are all PETA fans is getting really old. I personall think that PETA has good intentions but they're to comercial and a bit weird like when they were calling fish "sea kittens" and they even use sex to atract people like having girls pose naked to symbslize that they don't wear fur. I actulley do like the mercy for animals orginization because they are in my state so I see them at festivals and I always get their magizeens. They provide good information in a very appropriate way and I really hope to volunteer for them when I'm older but as far as I'm concerned PETA is just to extreem.

Vegetarian

I don't like them very much. They remind me of greenpeace in that they are so big now they are just in the business of making money. I really don't like how they NEED to have a naked woman in everything they do, and since it is young people who are most attracted to them that is a worry. Also I hate the way they attack other groups instead of trying to defend their own shortcomings, like in 2005 when they got caught illegally dumping dead animals their next newsletter featured a four page spread on why no-kill shelters are so bad. It was really awful behaviour and I stopped participating in any joint actions the organisation I was with had with peta from then on.

They are also unable to take criticism. I had a friend who went to the US to do the internship and she was an integral member of the peta2 forum. But one day she posted some stuff questioning their methods for certain things, in a way to open dialogue about getting some newer strategies. She was banned from the site and had all her posts deleted.

But they are not all bad. They provide free info to help people go veg, so I'm glad I can say something nice about them.

In my opinion, PETA is great for information. They have a lot on their website about vegan friendly products so that when you go to the grocery store you can buy things without going to a crazy expensive store like whole foods. They also have lists of animal testing free beauty products.

However, I think they take things to the extreme. I am definitely not for slaughtering animals and animal testing for things like cosmetics but PETA goes to the extreme with animal testing and medicine which in all honesty is something that I respect of those who refuse certain medicines but I can't support that for my family's sake.

So as a source of information i say great! as an influence in life choices, not so much.

most veggies and vegans are big fans of animal rights. many people automatically think that they are peta fans. these are mostly people who just know that peta is an animal rights group and know nothing of their insanely over the top work.

I like that peta and it's members are willing to stand up for animal rights and that they can stand so strongly together. but they are a ******* joke and they don't know where the line is. I mean- save the sea kittens? campaigning to get towns to change their names? when that new york mayor was diagnosed with cancer and they made that parody "got milk" poster with a pic of him and it said "got prostate cancer?" the your mummy kills animals comic with that pic of the lady stabbing a rabbit to try and ******* scare children with the violent imagery into sharing their beliefs? and that's jut the things I can remember.

I mean, don't get me wrong- I believe in animal rights but I also know the world needs to take baby steps. stricter rules on the way in which animals can be kept- specially pigs and chickens. encouraging people to buy the cage less eggs (at the very least. I get the free range brand that has the happy faces stamped onto the eggs. ^_^)for example. And most importantly education about WHY we have to do these things. my nan still buys the caged eggs 'cause they are cheaper 'cause to her it's all a bunch of hippy crap. I'm slowly changing her around by showing her that the chickens can also feel anxiety and depression and stuff, but education is a slow process, and peta just doesn't understand that it wont work over night, nor do they understand why the education aspect is so important.

PETA is evil, insane, unreasonable and seem to have ties to terrorist groups, and they give vegan a bad name. they seem to want media attention more than having any real motives.

Most vegans and vegetarians are reasonable people who I doubt would want anything to do with such a group.
You might not want the busiest times for the most answers since if many people asking question yours is not up as long.

http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/video.asp?…

take a look at that video and then tell me that PETA are a bunch of crazy extremeists for wanting to stop this kinda stuff happening in the world. that video doesnt even scratch the surface on the extent of animals cruelty present in the world, i'm just using it as an example. they go to extremes because otherwise no one takes any notice. governments dont stop animal cruelty, in many cases they fund it and cover it up. so who else is there to advocate for these animals? PETA is simply trying to get the truth about animal cruelty out there and in everyone's faces so they cant ignore it.

Neutral. However I know a lot of people (even some vegetarians) don't like them and there are some that do.
I ordered one of their vegetarian starter kits for my meateating friend before she became a vegetarian. The kit came with a cookbook that was entirely vegan. I thought that was a letdown because it's my personal opinion that one should start out as a lacto-ovo vegetarian before becoming vegan. Baby steps.

Vegan

Hi, vegan here. I don't know much about them but from what I do know, I don't like them. I will give them credit for the work they've done in terms of IAMS pet food and their other undercover work, because I think that's fantastic, but other than that I think they are just money-grabbing psychos to be honest.

This section goes through floods and droughts at fairly random times... It gets busier when it's the middle of the night for me, but considering I live in Australia I don't know what time that would be for other people. I think it's regular evening/night time in US when it's busy, that would make sense with people being at home and relaxing using the internet...

i cant stand peta, they are an organization of crack-pots that took a very good cause, that they could have done great things for, and twisted it around and manipulated it to suit their own fanatical needs. if they had done things like they had some sense it could have been a wonderful organization. but they had to go completely overboard with it and turn it into almost some kind of cult type organization.

Vegan here, I like how PETA shows me recipe in vegan foods and what to wear as vegans . They tell me where to buy for vegans only. But PETA is still werid when they suppose save abused animals, on other hands they didn't save animals. I am glad I never send money. I will never wear a shirt say PETA on it. I am proud to be HSUS . It is one true and strict support animal that travel worldwide. I have seen them

PETA made me become vegetarian. the meet your meat video, just did it for me.
i totally understnad that they want to save and help animals. and i admire that. but at times, i do think they get a little too extreme. i wouldnt say im a huge fan but i wouldnt say im a hater either. i just like watching their interviews with vegetarian celebrities! :)

please answer mine

I love peta...they are the only few organisations that really put it out there...these animals need help they dont have a voice...and some of the videos on their site its sooo moving but angers me at the same time to see how cruel humans can be its digusting. if people were simply kinder then we wouldnt have all this cruelty and mistreating in the world..one less issue we wouldnt have to worry about.

I don't think it's so true... PETA is weird, they have very strange/hazardous views on animal rights and such. Imagine the world if their ideals were universal!!!!!

This section is busiest in evenings.

PeTA is a nutty organization..

Vegetarian since birth

Peta members are really psychiatric patients posing to be humanitarians

They're a strange bunch....

a lot of veg*ns dont like peta cause they ,make us look bad

I am completely against PETA. Many have already explained my reasons. They target young naive kids and brainwash them with their propaganda. Yes, some of the stuff is true or helpful, but a lot of it is taken way out of proportion.

Its sad so many "love" PETA, but never bother to learn what they are really about. The PETA fans over in the dog section don't seem to believe PETA is against pet ownership. Or aren't aware of their side business of picking up dogs from local shelters and putting them to sleep. Their goal is to end domestic pets. That means no dogs, no cats in your house.

Her are a few quotes from PETA or Ingrid Newkirk herself

“…Eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship, enjoyment at a distance.”

“In a perfect world, all other than human animals would be free of human interference, dogs and cats would part of the ecological scheme.”
PETA’s Statement on Companion Animals

“Probably everything we do is a publicity stunt…We are not here to gather members, to please, to placate, to make friends. We’re here to hold the radical line.”
Ingrid Newkirk – Founder, PETA

This one is my favorite. I am vegetarian but please, comparing cooking chickens to the Holocaust

"Six million Jews died in concentration camps, but six billion broiler chickens will die this year in slaughter houses."
-Ingrid Newkirk (PETA)

And come one, who could really take them seriously after the Octomom spay neuter campaign?

The good thing about when the section is slower is that people still see your question even if it is later.
