Is it just a stereotype that vegans are atheist?!

Question: Is it just a stereotype that vegans are atheist?
Why would people assume it?

Answers:

I don't think so. I hope that no one concludes I'm an unapologetic carnivore because I'm lutheran. It sounds like an attachment a carnovore might make to further their view of things. Certainly there are issues in which vegans or vegetarians disagree with carnivores such as myself, but let us not namecall. let's just agree to disagree. Let's keep it civil.

Yes, it's just a stereotype, just as it's just a stereotype that all vegans are liberal.

But there are conservative veg*ans and religious vegans. Seventh Day Adventists advocate vegetarianism. And there is a website, at least, geared toward Christian vegetarians. And there's also one for Jewish vegetarians that uses their bible to justify veg*anism.

Carol J. Adams is a Christian vegetarian feminist activist who has written about the link between sexism and meat eating.

that's strange. i've also never heard of that stereotype.

I guess, that if someone is vegetarian/vegan for religious reasons, people assume that they are Buddhist (which is silly, because only one sect of Buddhism preaches the strict no meat diet), and most Buddhists are atheist.

No, a lot of religions promote vegetarianism. Jainism, Hinduism, Budhhism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism and some Sikhs are vegetarian (or vegan). Some types of christians promote vegetarianism (7th day avedntists).
Islam, Judaism and rastafarianism have limits on certain types of meat.

Personally, I was raised to be christian and eat meat, but I am currently vegan and unaffiliated with any religion, albeit not an athiest.

I've heard that, I find it to be a false stereotype. I know vegetarians and vegans of several different faiths. As others have said, it's similar to the stereotype that all vegans are liberals. It's just people being put off by a "different" lifestyle choice.

im not sure...ive seen several on here say they are athiest....because the bible advocates eating meat. the whole God put animals on the earth for food thing has been the main factor named.
i would be curious though to know why hello claims meat eaters would be the athiests.

not that it matters to me, im not really a religious person to begin with.

Never heard of that one, but have heard the stereotype that all or most vegans are liberals (false). I'm a vegan that does not believe in religion, yet not an atheist because I am rather a spiritualist that holds principles from varying philosophies.

I have never heard that stereotype in my life. I've been atheist since I was about 5 years old and a vegetarian for a week.

PS I have two vegan teachers at my high school. One of them goes to chuch, and I don't know the other's religion.

Stereotypes suck. Just like there are meat eaters that are atheist, there are also vegetarians and vegans that are atheist. I'm an agnostic l/o.

Probably because its a stereotype that they are liberals. People also think vegans worship Peta. That is so not true! lol.

I don't care for Peta or propaganda. I consider myself of Christian faith.

That is a stereotype I am a vegetarian, but I wanted to go full vegan and I am a Christian.

I heard that once or twice. Its probably because people sometimes use the bible to "justify" eating flesh, so they assume if you don't then you must be atheist.

vegan atheist :D

It's stereotype, of course Atheists are more intelligent than theists, and Veg*ns are infinitely more Intelligent than meat eaters. So it would be an easy mistake to make

yes thats overgeneralizing but i am a atheist vegetarian and i know others so there is a grain of truth in it.

I think so. Veganism is an option. I know a lot of hindu vegans.

I've never heard that stereotype before...?
I'm vegan and Lutheran.

I'm Methodist. O_o

Vegan

I've never heard that before.

I have never heard of that I'm vegan and a reform jew

Probably, I'm an atheist Omnivore.

Hmmm never heard of that...
plus, wouldn't it be the other way round... that atheists are more likely to be meat eaters...

I thought they were all tree hugging hippies. I never thought about them being atheist.
