Your friend is wrong. Vegetarians don't eat meat. Period. Some vegetarians add other dietary restrictions, but most vegetarians just don't eat meat. Fish is meat. Pesectarians, not vegetarians, to eat fish. Eggs and dairy products are NOT meat. Most vegetarians continue to eat them.
Your "friend" probably means gelatin. It's in a lot of jelly like products, gummy bears, jello, etc. It's made from animals.....but it is not meat. So if you want to continue eating gummy bears, go ahead. You'll still be vegetarian.
As far as I know, vegans (not vegetarians) omit animal-derived glycerin. But since glycerin can also be plant-based, they don't have to completely eliminate it from their diet. They just make sure they know where it comes from.
Glucose is a simple sugar and is considered a building block for complex carbohydrates. It is rarely found in food in its single molecular form. Glucose is found in varying quantities in most fruits and vegetables. Examples include, but are not limited to, figs, dates, apricots, apples, peppers, tomatoes and onions. Grapes are an especially rich source of glucose. So much so that glucose is sometimes referred to as grape sugar. It's a pretty important part of your diet!
I think she was referring to refined sugar, because in many cane sugar processing plants bone char is used in the carbon purification stage. Beet sugar doesn't need this process.
Gluten is a protein that is part of nearly every vegan staple food that is processed from wheat, barley and rye, and is only excluded if someone has an allergy to it (hence, gluten-free foods). Not necessary to have in one's diet.
Glucose is sugar, and gluten is a wheat product.
She was probably thinking gelatin, which is derived from animal products and found in some sweets, like marshmallows.
I do know that some very strict vegans buy only certain types of sugar that are processed differently -- if you are that strict, you're probably better off not eating any sweets, packaged foods, or anything prepared in a restaurant.
Let me tell you what I had learned 2 months after becoming vegan , it is very difficult. But I also learn that everyone is veryyyyyy different in their opinion when they eat vegan diet because most time they take it too far and say "No you can't eat this or that." or they will say "No you can't wear leather" but you can't take their words personally. Just do your best the way you want. Use your own judgement. she is not the one that make you vegan or buy your foods. so ingore what she say. I still eat wheat breads but I am vegan. Some people say I should not eat wheat bread because it has milk but other ppl say it is OK! because it is great and healthy for me as long I don't eat meat, cheese, dairy. A lot ppl gotta be strict having different opponions just ingore them.
You can eat sugar because you are not like some strict vegan that dont want sugar in their system. Still glucose is same as any kind drink, fruit, vegetable, a lot foods.... strict vegan just dont relaixe that.
Your friend is wrong! my mom said the same thing to me but they told me it was only the old fashioned vegan that strict. I was like oh ok. forget it, I aint gotta do it.... I will go for sweet...
LOL! That's completely UNTRUE. Gluten is not meat. It's a plant ingredient.
Some ingredients you should look for and avoid are gelatin, lard and cochineal. Gelatin is made from boiling the bones, skin and connective tissues of pigs. Lard is animals fat. Cochineal is a dye made from crushed beetles.
I think she meant gelatin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelatin
Gelatin is a protein produced by partial hydrolysis of collagen extracted from the boiled bones, connective tissues, organs and some intestines of animals such as domesticated cattle, pigs, and horses.
Here is a list of common animal-derived ingredients: http://www.vegansociety.com/lifestyle/an…
This is not a problem if you're just vegetarian. As already said I think your friend probably meant beef or pork gelatine.
Vegetarian
Your friend doesn't know what they're talking about. Not really an issue, because most people don't. I actually had a doctor ask me if I still ate fish, when I told him I was a Vegetarian. haha.
candy comes fromm sugar which is a plant cocoa also plant dextrose sugar derivitaive theres no meat in 99% of candy its vegitarian safe but not vegan safe becase a lot of candies have eggs
if you are not vegan or diabetic you can easily eat sugar
