Is it okay to eat animals, but not okay to study them?!
What do you think? Would you support such a study or not?
P.S. I'm thinking of becoming a vegetarian. I just wanted to show that it doesn't make sense to support killing animals every day, and not support studying them.

I eat meat and I am for animals testing.
People don't make the connect between eating meat and killing animals because they don't actually kill the animal. Some people have the attitude where "It's dead already, so why not eat it." They obviously don't know what supply and demand are.
I understand why you think it is alright to experiment on the monkey. You say they use anesthetics. I honestly think you should do more research into the plight of a lab animals. It's not as humane as people think it is.
People are entitled to their own opinion, but once I made the connection I didn't want to have "blood on my hands anymore."
My feeling on this is that it's acceptable to kill an animal for sustenance but not to torture them with medical experimentation. Any experiment that's conducted on an animal still has to go through human trials. Animals react differently to things than we do. How would you know if a monkey has Alzheimer's? How would you know if treatment is working if they can't communicate with the doctor's? Personally, I would rather they conduct important medical research on death row inmates than animals. If you're serious about not eating meat, you might want to look into becoming a vegan instead of just a vegetarian. I never understand people who think it's wrong to eat meat but it's okay to eat fish and eggs and drink milk.
I don't think the means justifies the ends. We've done some pretty horrible stuff before that has benefited us but I don't think it justifies it. It was still horrible although legal at the time Plus most animal experiments are not only inhumane but pointless. People might feel like they are superior to animals or w/e but we have no right to abuse them.
i eat animals and i think is perfectly okay to study on them as long as its necessary, did you knew that thanks to animal testing John E.Salk cured polio?, but unnecessary animal testing is wrong
as long as it doesnt deplete the nautural monkey population extinction is a nautural process it happens
As long as the research was properly vetted, yes, I'd support it.
But this is a dishonest comparison. We don't eat monkeys.
The question is a little out - If you had a similar comparison like 'is it ok to eat monkeys?' I think you would have got a different answer, and your class would have bee opposed both.
You asked what the community what they thought? But it is a very individual thing regarding the personal beliefs behind vegetarianism and whether animal experiments are acceptable. It is a social question and has alot to do with how we were brought up, what expectations we have, how we view the world, how we view scientific advancements and so on.
I have read that most would agree to animal experiments for medical/scientific advancement, but fewer numbers would agree to repeated experiments when results have been established.
In a Psychology class, their views will differ, depending upon differing factors, ie who suggested the question, how it was put out to the group, who responded and how they responded, who was following who, etc..... We are animals ourselves, we have pack-like / tribal instincts and so on - thus as there is no right or wrong answer to your question, you may find that many took a tribal approach and followed others (as they did not want to stand out).
You can take pride in yourself that your not following the pack, but thinking and questioning things - I think that's what this type of class is attempting to teach and it seems you're going to do well if you think for yourself (and not follow others). Take a balanced view, listen to what others have to say and conclude it for yourself, as this is the one thing that will differentiate us. Keep it up!
Well if you were studying the monkey for the sake of the monkey it would be vegan. But that is not what is happening here as they aren't trying to cure monkeys with Alzheimer or that monkey in particular.
To take advantage of animals to perform studies that benefit people is from the vegan perspective just another instance of taking advantage of the animal besides slaughter. The animal does not benefit from the procedure.
Personally, I am not vegan/vegetarian and I do support medical research. Lab animals would have zero life at all if it weren't for the need to perform these types studies. And, lab animals are treated much better than most people keep their pets at home. The conditions, the environment, the toys, the food are all top notch. The public hears horror stories and makes up stories in their minds of scientist in coats being cruel to animals. I can tell you it is the stuff of urban legend and is not reality. I've worked as a scientist in medical research for 30 years on thousands upon thousands of various animals. I've never witnessed an act of cruelty. We take exceptional care to perform procedures painlessly and with the best of conditions.
