Vegans: Why should I become a vegan?!

Question: Vegans: Why should I become a vegan?
My mum raised me as a vegetarian, so I have never consumed meat. I never wear leather or anything along those lines, but I still eat eggs, milk etc.
Lately I have been pondering the idea of becoming a vegan. My meat eater friends have been trying to deter me from becoming a vegan though. Can you persuade me and give me valid reasons to become a vegan? How is your life as a vegan?

Answers:

Even when you don't eat the actual flesh of an animal, chickens and cows still suffer. Dairy cows are chained to one stop their entire life with machines hooked up to them sucking out every ounce of drug-boosted milk in their bodies. Chickens are stuck in tiny wire cages with 9 other chickens, and if they're not in cages they are cramped in a giant windowless room with barely enough space to flap their wings.
When you choose alternative ways to get protein and calcium, you are helping to stop these animals suffering.

I'm a vegan :)

I'm a meat eater, but I can give you reasons to become vegan.

Avoiding meat is one of the best and simplest ways to cut down on fat. Eating fatty meat increases your chances of having a heart attack or developing cancer.

Meat contains absolutely nothing - no proteins, vitamins or minerals.

If we eat the plants we grow instead of feeding them to animals, the world's food shortage will disappear virtually overnight. 100 acres of land will produce enough beef for 20 people but enough wheat to feed 240 people.

It's much easier to become (and stay) slim if you are a vegetarian. (By 'slim', I do not mean 'abnormally slender' or 'underweight' but rather, an absense of excess weight!)

The following diseases are commoner among meat eaters: anaemia, appendicitis, arthritis, breast cancer, cancer of the colon, cancer of the prostrate, constipation, diabetes, gallstones, gout, high blood pressure, indigestion, obesity, piles, strokes and varicose veins.

Lifelong vegetarians visit hospital 22% less often than meat eaters and for shorter stays.

Vegetarians have a 20% lower blood cholestrol level than meat eaters and this reduces heart attack and cancer risks considerably.

My opinion

I'm not vegan or vegetarian, I'm on and off with my vegetarianism, but I'm trying to cut it out completely eventually. Vegans basically believe that humans don't need milk to survive, and that we're the only beings on earth that consume another one's milk. I would be all for the vegan aspect besides the milk drinking, because It doesn't harm cow/goats in anyway, and milk is great for your body. Sorry, I know I'm not vegan but I wanted to share my thoughts with you. And forget what lowlifes like Cliff have to say, they aren't worth your time. LoL at Angelo, she doesn't eat meat as it is just eggs.

Well in India we get milk from cows naturally without chains and machinery, but I suppose here in western countries they do use a more cruel method of extracting the milk from the cows.

In relation to ''pockybun''
That really depends on the country you are in & the manufacturar you are buying from, for example in Ireland where i live cows graze fields all day both those prepared for slaughter & those for milk, similarly the cattle 90% of times is raised & sold at high prices. Just because factory farming exists or evil practices does not mean that all farmers or agricultural businesses do this to their animals, as it is detrimental to the products quality & thus yields lower profits.

To be honest being a vegan is a big-step, for example i'm a vegetarian i consume milk & eggs off respectable irish farms here. Don't wear leather & where i can try not to buy animal tested products (being banned soon hopefully in the EU) yet even though i do a fair bit, i'm not a vegan as i still use animals for my own gain.
Rather than get associated with these sort of labels, just try cut out harm where you can or as the dalai lama says 'if you can, help others. If you cannot do that, then do not harm them''

You should become a vegan for your own reasons, not anyone else's.

Oh and I don't murder, I kill animals for food. Every single life-form on this planet lives at the expense of another life-form. Animals either kill for food or get killed for food. This is nature, its just the way it is.

If you don't want to eat meat that's your right and I respect that. But don't call others murderers for doing so when it is a perfectly natural thing to do. When you do so it just shows your ignorance and intolerance. Have a nice day.

Yes Ed Gein was a murderer. He killed humans. His reason for killing was NOT for food. But he did eat some human flesh. Even in the wild animals don't eat their own kind. It has been done but it is VERY uncommon. So my logic is not what you think and is not ridiculous. If you want to compare an evil man murdering other humans for his own sick enjoyment to a person killing an animal for food then YOUR logic is ridiculous.

Yea, I suppose Ed Gein wasn't a murderer either since he killed his victims for food. That logic is ridiculous. Anyway, being a vegan is healthier than being a vegetarian and better for the environment, but it's more expensive and there is less variety. You can decide if the pros outweigh the cons.

Vegetarian, would go vegan if I bought my own food.

The "Bottom Line" is this:

Metabolisms vary a lot. Some folks do fine...even thrive on a vegetariran, even vegan diet...but OTHERS DON'T. I speak from experience.

The woman who claimed that meat has no food value at all...even protein (her answer seems to have been deleted) is absolutely incorrect. Meat is very rich in protein, and has some fat content (and iron too), as well.

I would suggest that it would be more difficult to get enough total...and balanced...protein as a vegan, so would discourage it...but--of course--this is your option, not mine.

And, yes, there are philosophical questions here, quite apart from nutritional ones. Good luck.

Did you see my re-asking your question about girls being affectionate, after it was deleted? ; )

I don't really consider it- I always prefer the taste of soymilk, almond milk, almond and soy cheese and nut cheeses and other milks.

I find dairy from cows REALLY acidic and it tastes sour.
Eggs, I'm not really bothered about eating them, I don't love them so much I can't do without .
All the other stuff- cheese and milk are all better tasting and less mucus forming than dairy anyway.

For health- acid forming diary milk is very high PH, it forms mucis in your mouth, intestines, and does build up an acidic coating over time. YOu end up more bloated and swollen in your intestine.

If you think about it, the only things meant to eat milk are the babies of that speices. OUr species- humans, are made to eat our own milk, and not the milk of a big hulking beast, the only purpose of which is to form the teeth of the young.

Your breathe smells a lot better too. Dairy, milk and cheese from cowmilk really builds up acidic deposits.

FOr myself, I feel 100% MORE clean internally not eating dairy and stuff. I'm not big on processed foods, so it's easy for me. If you eat poptarts, cereals, canned soups and stuff like that, milk and cheese powder etc is in a LOT, so you might want to address that.
I don't really eat that stuff much so I never miss it.
Your body CLINGS onto diary- it is animal based and will stick to the inside of your intestine. We simple do not have the digestive enzymes to clean out the dairy and it builds up.
When you eat soymlilk, almond milk cheeses yoghurt etc instead, these are PLANT based.
Our bodies are designed to eat plant foods- they clean themselves out by their water and fibre content, which is totally absent in animal foods.

We have our own DNA to make our own cholesterol. Cholesterol is a white substance that is meant to surround lining of your bloodstream system. We make our own. OUr body does NOT process animal cholesterol, that's why animal fat makes humans sick.

You shouldn't. If I were you, I'd expand my horizons and try meat. Nothing wrong with trying something new.
