i am an underweight vegan guy? questions?!

Question: I am an underweight vegan guy? questions?
I'm 15(turning 16 in march) 5'5 1/2, and I weight about 107 pounds. At the beginning of the year I weighed about 133, when I went Vegetarian I went down to 107, now I'm a vegan(haven't been for too long) and I'm still the same.. If I lose anymore weight, could I have some serious health problems? I plan on starting weight lifting here soon, so I should put on muscle(which would make me gain). So basically what I'm asking, is there any problems with me being underweight?

Like any athlete they have to consume more than the average person to be able to keep healthy in their sport. You being underweight will only harm you when taking up weight lifting. To build up muscle you need to bulk up to be able to fuel and create the muscles. If you are underweight or eat enough to enable to bulk up you will not be able to get the effect you desire!!

You will suffer and develop health problems if you do not get your diet correct to help you with day to day life as well as any other pursuits!!

You need a lot of proteins and I know that athletes and even amateurs eat a lot of protein from chicken and vegetables!!

I understand your problem. You are the same body type as me. To keep your body weight you need to exercise 10-15mins 3 times a week. you can do Hindu pushups (15-20), hindu squats (30-50) and regular pushups (10-15), morning or evening time on alternate days. You will be able to gain weight once you exercise. Also you can drink milk (or yogurt) till the age of 18 or 20 until you reach your full height and then switch to complete vegan diet. Good luck!

Edit: also add some fat like avocado, peanut butter, soaked almonds (soak almonds overnight and peel skin before eating), cashews, bananas etc into your diet. Combine this with the exercise I mentioned above, it will help you gain muscle weight. Good luck!

You are technically in the healthy BMI range for teen males with a bmi of 17.8, however you are bordering underweight. I would try to incorporate more protein(beans, tofu, boca burgers) , carbohydrates into your diet and perhaps take a break from being vegan to consume more dairy. As for working out you should be taking weight gain supplements and be lifting but to the point where you dont burn that many calories. Also your weight and muscle mass depends on whether you have hit puberty or not so its another factor.

Being underweight is not a problem, but loosing so much weight so rapidly is a major problem. My guess is that you are not getting enough protein and enough calories overall. Make sure you get 2,000 calories per day, and 3 servings of protein, which can be beans, nuts, tofu, etc. Being vegetarian/vegan is healthy, but you need to eat enough food.

Many vegans overlook the protien issue, your body needs protien and you must make sure you substitute the protien you have cut out from not eating meat or dairy. Nuts are a good source as are seeds and pulses. you should research a healthy vegan diet before turning vegan to make sure your body is not lacking any essential elements.

It is very dangerous to be underweight. But unlike what some people might say, being vegan is not dangerous. Review what you're eating on a normal basis. Make sure you are getting all of your nutrients and you're eating either six small meals a day or three big meals with snacks in between. Make sure you're taking in at least 1800 calories.

Open your eyes and realize that what you are doing to your body is not healthy.

Read the articles that the vegetarians and vegans here don't want you to see:

Well it depends, but as long as you have all the vitamins you need, proteins, etc, then you should be alright.

Hi,

Yes you are underweight. Eat some fatty foods.

You definitely need to concentrate on getting more protein and healthy fat into your diet. Nuts are a great source of both, even peanuts, so that should be one part of your strategy. Beans are also a good source of protein, and tofu. Try to stick with whole grains, and avoid carbs made with white flour, like bread or pasta or white rice, and stick with whole grain versions of the same, and brown rice. Whole grains contain a lot more protein than white flour. You might also try adding some soy protein powder to your food, like soups, pasta sauces, and drinks. Just make sure you find some soy protein powder in the health food store that isn't pre-sweetened or flavored (you don't want sweet vanilla-flavored soup or pasta sauce, yuck!).
The biggest problem most vegans get into is a lack of vitamin B12. Good vegan sources of B12 are seaweed and miso (fermented soybean paste). You can find both in most health food stores. Ask them for recipes if you don't know how to add them to your diet. Seaweed is a great addition to most soups, and if you add them to your pot of beans before you cook them, the seaweed will add a great salty flavor, plus vitamin B12, plus iodine (an essential nutrient), and also make the beans more easily digestible, so they cause less gas. Miso paste is also a great addition to soups, stews, and sauces, just be aware that is very salty, so you probably won't need to add any more salt. Try to buy organic miso, since most organic misos are made with sea salt, which has a healthier balance of sodium and potassium than table salt, plus a load of other essential trace elements that are hard to come by otherwise.
I suggest you learn more about Macrobiotics. It is a strict form of veganism that can actually be very healthy for you, if you follow the principles of the diet carefully. I was strictly macrobiotic for 4 years and I never felt better, but it is time consuming, since you have to cook almost all your food by yourself. I learned about miso and seaweed while eating macrobiotically. A good place to learn about Macrobiotics is from the Kushi Institute website.

Hey! Uh I'd say start eating fish so you're getting the amino acids you need that are only found in meat, it's sort of something you need to be eating and cannot be taken as a supplement.

yes you need meat to live. vegans eat a meat substitute (protein) to keep their body functions right. vegans and vegetarians is a good way to get sick
