this is why I have a rabbit :) the perfect little vegetarian pet!

there are vegan foods available for both dogs and cats. dogs are naturally omnivores, just like humans. youve probably seen vegan dog food in stores and just didnt realize it (Natural Balance for example is a very common brand and they make a "Vegetarian" formula that is actually vegan). cats however are naturally carnivores---they CAN develop urinary tract infections on a vegan diet (particularly male cats) but they can also be healthy on a vegan diet (there just really needs to be more research done on that.)

My dogs are feeding on vegan / vegetarian formula dry dog food or I will cook potatoes, carrots, brown rice for them sometimes.
I am not vegan / vegetarian but I've adopted my dogs from a vegan family who are the foster home for many dogs and cats so I just continue giving them vegan / vegetarian food instead of changing.

I feed my dog nutritionally-fortified vegan dog food, and my cat as well.
Both are thriving.

Just like with people-
nutrition matters,
not the source.

Someone who buys animal products, let alone meat, is not a vegan.

If vegans truly love animals than they will realize the needs that their pets have. It should be against their moral code to deny the animal what it needs, which does include meat.
To make the animal a vegan would be abuse, because that is not the natural order of things. We've all seen a hungry lion chomp a gazelle to pieces on the Discovery channel before, we know how it's supposed to work.
Humans on the other hand, can make conscious decisions for themselves. It would be cruel to make a decision for an animal who doesn't know any better that would result in malnutrition.

I know vegos who will even cook meat for their dogs, because they love them so much! :)

I'd never feed my pet a vegan diet, or a vegetarian one. Humans and dogs are different animals, they have different dietary needs. That is that. Humans are omnivorous, and then can survive on a full plant diet. Some other species are omnivorous but still need bOTH plant & meat. Humans are certainly the exception. To force non-humans to follow a vegetairna OR vegan lifestyle is simply wrong. Their biology wasn't set up for that. To force a vegetarian or vegan diet on a non-herbivorous animal IS animal cruelty, which ANY morally-engineered vegetarian or vegan should know and respect.

If a vegan is so ...well...I guess you could say passionate....about a vegan diet, I highly suggest a pet like a rabbit, which was designed to eat a diet not consisting of meat.

Regardless of the fact that selective breeding has allowed dogs to be omnivorous, a high lean meat diet is optimum for them similar to the converse of a human diet (ie high plant matters with supplemented meat). I've pretty much yet to hear of any vet who i visit with my dog suggest otherwise, instead we buy a product of dry nuggets made from both meat & vegetable sources ranging from chicken/fish/rice-grinds.

Personally if a vegan has such a big problem with feeding its pet, i personally think that person should get a herbivourous animal such as a rabbit.

I feed my dog regular food with meat, dogs are naturally meant to eat meat. Just think of wolves bringing down a animal. Humans do not have to, they are fine without it but dogs are carnivores. My vegan friend even cooks steak for her dog. I tried to feed my dog veggie food but she would not touch it and when I switched to chicken she loved it. I do not like supporting the meat in dusty to buy food for my dog but it is for there own good,

My dog eats a diet of raw organic chicken (with the bones), raw organic eggs (with the shells), a little olive oil, a bit of nutritional yeast, sometimes a couple of sardines, sometimes some organ meat.
My cat eats basically the same thing, only it goes through the meat grinder.

I buy no animal products for myself. I feed my pets what is best for them.

I am not vegan but just want to say this - I believe it is extremely WRONG to feed any animal contrary to its natural diet. Not eating meat is MY decision, I will not impose it on an animal that has no choice and, if it had the choice, would choose meat.
Dogs are carnivores. Cats are obligate carnivores.
The source does matter. Supplementation is the worst kind of nutrition.
I take care in my own diet to get all the nutrients I need in whole form wherever possible because I prefer not to supplement or use fortified products.

My dogs get a high quality dog food with meat as the top ingredients.

I feed him regular dog food. He's a dog and he depends on me to keep him healthy. The same thing applies to my cats.
