Do beans really produce flatulence (ie ''farts'') & if so why?!
TMI i know but its a genuine curious question
Answers:
Flatulence is produced when some of the bacteria who naturally live in our intestines ferment complex sugar we do not have the enzymes to digest. Farts are mostly methane gas (an odorless and flammable gas) that get 'scented' by sulfuric and other organic compounds that give them their particular, generally anti-social odors. Beans, Cruciferous Vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts etc) and other plants foods have high concentrations of these complex sugars.
Beano is a pill you can eat with these foods that has an enzyme that breaks down these complex sugars, and so reduces/eliminates gas. Oddly enough it is not vegan. There is a vegan tablet called Beanzyme that does that same thing, it is vegan, and half the price of Beano.
Living a vegan life the past 20 years.
They contain a toxin called lectins (specifically Phytohaemagglutinin) and a sugar called oligosaccharide, which can't be processed by the body and cause gas. Cooking reduces the chemicals - never eat beans raw or you're in for some really bad stomach trouble! It's present in most beans, but kidney beans have a particularly high concentration of it.
If you're soaking and cooking dry beans, add bicarb of soda to the water, and make sure you chuck the soak water away and rinse the beans really well before cooking (and make sure they're well cooked before eating). If you're using cooked canned beans, there's not a lot else you can do!
Beans are also very high in fibre, and too much fibre can cause gas whatever the source. If you're going to increase your fibre intake you should always do it gradually. So maybe you should just watch your quantities! XD
Beans contain oligosaccharides that can't break down by the intestines.
Oh yes they do! For me they do, especially pinto.
I dont know why.
