You could try Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" and look at his sources, he gives a brief account of the development of broiler chicken production and perhaps more (been years since I read it so I don't remember) but his sources should help you out.

Any book or literature by the US Department of Agriculture is about as unbiased as you are going to get. They have stats, standards/guidelines, projections, new laws etc etc. They don't indulge on emotion or personal views.Their intention is to inform no more no less and not convert or debate anyone. All the other books mentioned by the others are private accounts based on the biases of the authors. Even if the statistics are mentioned n them, they will still reflect the prejudice of the author, not to mention show what only he/she thinks are worth printing (increase book sales).
Agree: Lol vegan biologist. Also an ecologist who for some reason was clueless about the obvious difference between China and North America.
Vegan biologist, lol
Not from Peta lol
The China Study ... I forget the author name but very worthwhile book to look up.
The Omnivore's Dilemma. Forget the authors name also lol but shouldn't be hard to find. The author talks about meat industry but does stay somewhat biased. ( He hasn't become a full on veg)
Yay Vegan Biologist :) I'm studying to be a Biologist :D and I'm a Vegan. Sorry I can't help with the question, but sir Vegan Biologist can.
You could try "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. It's about the horrors of the meatpacking industry.
