Is it true about Tofu and it's links to?!

Question: Is it true about Tofu and it's links to?
CAncer.
For as I understand it,it is Not a natural food stuff for the stomach to digest thus causing digestive problems,I understand that it takes 72hrs for meat to digest whereas it takes Months for Tofu to digest. So are you not in the same category as smokers, alcoholics with your Tofu induced cancer taken up NHS resources with your Man made illnesses

Answers:

There is no actual scientific evidence that any food, including soya, causes, prevents, contributes to or affects the progress of any cancer (the exception being high consumption of red and processed meat, which is a proven major risk factor for colorectal cancers).

No, it is not well documented that cancer is man made. Nobody knows what causes cancer; the finest scientific minds in the world whose life's work it is to find out don't yet know.

Cancer is an ancient disease, predating humankind. Evidence of cancerous tumours has been found in the fossil remains of dinosaurs.

There is no known link between tofu or any other soya product and cancer.

Soya proteins contain isoflavones that can mimic a weak oestrogen effect. It's not the same as the oestrogen your own body makes though - it is 1,000 times weaker than your own body's oestrogen, but it's this that has led to concerns (and rumour) about oestrogen dependent cancer.

Hence there are claims that soya promotes or even causes ostrogen driven breast cancer, but there is no scientific proof that it does.

(It's only oestrogen driven cancers that have caused any concern re soya, by the way, not colorectal or stomach cancers as you seem to be suggesting.)

There are those in the field who argue that isoflavones may be of help in preventing breast cancer or be beneficial to women who have had breast cancer.

There is current research into whether increasing phyto oestrogens in the diet helps to prevent breast or prostate cancer, and a study in 2002 found that women with the highest levels of soya products in their diets had the lowest breast density - higher breast density being associated with higher breast cancer risk.

Women with the highest levels of isoflavones in their diet are reported to have significant risk reductions for uterine cancer.

I have had oestrogen dependent breast cancer, and have never been warned against soya - don't you think oncologists might just be in possession of any information about tofu causing cancer?

Check with any reputable cancer information service or charity - go to their websites and do a search for 'breast cancer risk factors'; you won't find soya consumption listed anywhere.

This is a very serious subject for you to have chosen to hang a silly, invented anti-veg*n argument on. Perhaps another time choose something other than a deadly and terrifying disease with no known cause, gruelling treatments and no guaranteed cures for your invented stories.

No, it's not true. When I google "tofu cancer", all the major media and government sites state that it may actually fight against cancer. All the small less-credible websites run by 1 or 2 people are the ones that say bad things about it.

Tofu, Soy Diet Linked to Lower Death in Breast Cancer Survivors

Eating tofu can slash ovarian cancer risk

Curried tofu may fight prostate cancer
http://www.examiner.com/vegan-in-nationa…

Risk of breast cancer decreased with increasing frequency of intake of tofu after adjustment for age, study area, ethnicity, and migration history; the adjusted OR associated with each additional serving per week was 0.85 (95% CI = 0.74-0.99). The protective effect of high tofu intake was observed in pre- and postmenopausal women.

Tofu is made from soy milk. Like most foods it is used up by your body within 24 hours. Tofu is an estrogen mimicker so men might not want to eat it 3 times a day. It is a good source of an incomplete protein so it should be eaten with rice and sesame or legumes and wheat noodles to make it a complete protein.

Cancer is caused by environmental and natural things. Asbestos which is found naturally in the asbestos mines is terribly carcinogenic. Tobacco is too. So are the drugs which kill parasites but we try to lesson the chances of getting cancer by eating stuff in moderation, not smoking, not staying in the sunlight all day all summer getting skin cancer but also getting a good source of Vitamin D!

Do some research. Contact snopes.com for all the urban legends.

No of course it's not true, which is why you don't provide any evidence to back up such a ridiculous claim. But the real evidence seems to be lost on you as you regard science as "needless surveys". This is common among some people who have never studied science and hence don't understand what's involved. I'd encourage you to look into the processes involved in the scientific method, which might make you more confident in the results that occasionally get discussed in the media. That's not to say that the results can never be wrong (and certainly the conclusions more often are incorrect) but it is not just a matter of doing surveys.

Try this website for a good outline of what we have to do before research gets published: http://teacher.pas.rochester.edu/phy_lab…

Then there is the peer review process, which helps to identify flaws in the research before it is finally published. The British Medical Journal describes their process here: http://resources.bmj.com/bmj/authors/pee…

EVERYTHING now days can cause cancer, and it does not take months for tofu to digest. In matter of fact preservatives found in most foods are harder on your body. Aspartame turns into formaldehyde (embalming fluid) when it hits your liver, and artificial Sugar is known to actually increase your chances of type two diabetes.

My point is, look how long Asians live, if tofu was really that bad they would not be living so long.

I don't know what sites you've been reading but that is 100% untrue.

SOybean digests easily. Your body likes it.
TOfu is a natural foodstuff- it can be made with ONE ingredient- soybeans.

It can be organic soybeans too. It is easily digestibel because it's a soft plant food.

It does not cause cancer. It has been used for thousands and thousands of years, originating in Asia where the people have eaten it in their diet with no bad side effects.
TOfu is the pressed soybeans from the soy plant, it is a healthy natural VERY ancient food.

I hate to break this to you,
but next to nothing we eat is "natural food stuff".

If a food took "months to digest", one's body would enter into toxic sepsis and you would die.

Use some common sense.

Just because it doesn't prevent cancer doesn't mean it is cancerous. There are such things as neutral foods.

Go back to the football section.

Being an idiot is more acceptable there.

No it's not

Tofu, or processed soybean, does not take months to digest. It takes less than 24 hours optimally.

As for protein, Soy is not only a great source, but its vastly more efficient than other sources and it's a complete protein (meaning it has all of the essential amino acids):

"Soybeans can produce at least twice as much protein per acre as any other major vegetable or grain crop, 5 to 10 times more protein per acre than land set aside for grazing animals to make milk, and up to 15 times more protein per acre than land set aside for meat production."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soybean#cit…

If you're worried about cancer, you shouldn't be concerned with soy itself, but processed foods in general. Switch the tofu for the tempeh.

In addition, soy has been linked to cancer prevention, not cause:

FDA approved a soy health claim in 1999 that states that 25 grams of soy protein a day as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. That is about two servings of soyfoods per day but varies on products used. Foods that meet the labeling must have at least 6.25 g soy protein/serving.

There is evidence suggesting that exposure to soy during childhood and/or adolescence reduces breast cancer risk later in life.

Data overall suggest that soyfoods do not pose a risk to breast cancer patients or women at high-risk of this disease and therefore can be safely consumed by all women at any point in their lifetime.

Soy contains at least five phytochemicals that may help prevent or slow the progression of some cancers. Current research suggests that soy may help protect against prostate cancer.

Anyway, I would absolutely love to see legitimate sources to back up some of these fallacious claims. Particularly the one about "months of digestion", "tofu isnt a natural source of protein" and "tofu induced cancer". Thanks. (:
