You mean while the chick is still in the egg? The egg shell houses the baby chick and the egg inside the shell is food for the baby chick.

A chick doesn't need to eat for the first two days after hatching. Domestic chickens are usually fed a blend of grains which is heavily processed but the species (Gallus gallus) is naturally omnivorous so if raised outdoors they may also feed on small invertebrates if they can find them. You can feed them stale bread soaked in liquid, mashed cereal or get specialised chook food from an agricultural supply store. Adults are happy feeding on kitchen scraps, they are really great pets for this reason because they help to fertilise your garden and keep those nutrients from leftover foods cycling through the ecosystem in your back yard.
