Answers:

A person who strives not to exploit animals in every aspect of their life including food, clothing, personal care, etc.

This is a definitio,n from the Vegan Society (2004), based off of Donald Watson's original definition. Donald Watson was the creator of the term vegan and founded the world's first Vegan Society in England back in 1944.

"The word 'veganism' denotes a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude — as far as is possible and practical — all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, including humans and the environment.
In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

vegan because animals are not property

If my understanding is correct: A vegetarian is someone who does not eat meat and whose diet consists of organic and nutrient rich vegetables. A vegan is someone who includes that diet but whose way of life is effected by a philosophy that protests the denaturing and handling of foods from their naturely organic form.

To put it simply:
vegetarian=diet
vegan=way of living.

Think of them as though they are a vegetarian on steroids. If they could digest without the aid of bacteria, they probably would. No animal input at all in their diets. Even cooking the vegetables is a misuse of energy and therefore raw foods are sometimes stressed as being even more healthy for you to eat.

I am not a vegan. They are good people though. Really.

See if "GC" will answer you. he is a contact here and is a biology prof who is also a vegan. He will steer you straight.

Every vegan is different. All do not eat meat, or any animal by products. Most do not wear fur or leather etc , do not use products that were tested on animals , wear makeup that has any part of an animal in it , and so on.

vegetarian

People who refrain from eating any animal products (or anything derived from animal products) or using animal products such as leather, silk, or wool. It is a more strict form of vegetarianism.
