I want to become a vegetarian but...?!

Question: I want to become a vegetarian but...?
Can you still eat eggs? I've heard because it wasn't slaughtered or technically "animal flesh" it's okay. Because, I love eggs!

And what are some other things I can eat other than meat, you know, other than fruit, vegetables, grains and nuts?

Like certain dishes or something?

Yes, you can eat eggs.

There is a lot of vegetarian options.

Generally it is meat itself not allowed.

Though there are stricter ways of going about.

Or you can do what I do and just eat whatever the hell you like.

Of course you can still eat eggs, its common practice in agriculture to seperate females from males & chickens have been selective-bred over generations to produce high yield of eggs (which they do naturally, i don't know actually why this would be helpful to survival though). There is no living animal in the egg & its checked too by holding it up to a bright light in a dark room (something of that nature).

As for what you can eat, i thought that vegetarians were limited in what they eat. Not exactly, look at it logically the only time you would consume regular meat in the average day is 1) breakfast where potentially you ahve a fry of rashers (bacon) etc
2) a snack where you put a bit of meat in a sandwich
3) dinner where about 1/4 or so of the dinner is a portion of meat

Since being vegetarian i've started consuming a million different types of food i'd probably never have gone near when eating meat. Apart from gelatin based sweets (essentially left-over bits of animal carcass ground up) every type of chocolate/pancake/cereal etc is still available & in many cases pectin derived jellies exist.
I recommend if you want further information the one & only decent (brilliant i should say) vegetarian podcast ''vegetarian food for thought''

vegetarian
ask away & search away for info here if you want

Don't worry so much about the label. Eat whatever you want to eat, and don't eat whatever you don't want to eat. If you are worried about what is considering vegetarian because of what is "okay", who cares? And you probably won't stick to it. So don't eat whatever you think you shouldn't. I'm vegetarian and I don't eat any kind of meat. That's the basic definition. If you want to go into it even more, I check labels for any kind of gelatin, carmine (crushed up cochineal beetles used for coloring), rennet (cheese-- I've even seen some cheeses that say they are vegetarian), I avoid milk and usually eggs. Chicken broth is in many soups that you wouldn't expect it to be in (tomato, broccoli cheddar, etc).

Try tofu (you have to cook it, if you eat it mushy...it's gross. I don't cook it much myself, so I can't be more helpful on that. But it's really good in chinese food w/ brown rice and veggies, if it is fried). Packaged fake meat products like those from Morningstar Farms, Boca, Quorn, etc.

Potatoes in lots of stuff, baked potatoes with toppings, soups, etc.

Find some good soup recipes, pasta with a good veggie marinara sauce, salads, burritos (I love Chipotle burritos), sandwiches, etc.

First off, congratulations for wanting to try a different lifestyle.
A lot of the answers to this question are a bit mixed up.
Yes, you can eat eggs. You can also eat milk, cheese and yogurt. These are animal by products and are generally avoided by someone who is vegan , not vegetarian.

Some things to watch out for are gelatin which is in foods such as JELLO, and Worcestershire sauce and cesar dressing ( they contain anchovies). Most vegetarians refrain from eating fish but that is completely up to you.

As for dishes to try...

Thai, Japanese and Indian recipes all have great vegetarian alternatives and can make for a fun night out to a restaurant.

Vegetable lasagna, butternut squash ravioli , peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, black bean burgers, stews, guacamole, and chilli's are great dishes to try. Once you get comfortable with your new way of eating you may want to try more tofu or other meat alternatives.

Here are some great websites/books to check out.

Check out books at your local library on vegetarian dishes as well. good luck!

You can still eat eggs, milk, cheese and other diary products. It's really not that hard (just no meat).

One little trick one is that you shouldn't eat gelatin which is in gummy bears and jello to a name a few (it's made of processed pig skin, bones and basically by-product). go to Peta.com and get a vegetarian starter kit for free!

And to the other responders on this-

I think you're confused about being vegan versus being vegetarian. Vegetarians don't eat ANIMALS vegans don't eat ANIMAL PRODUCTS. So that's the difference. An egg is like milk, it's a product from an animal. If that egg were to stay underneath the chicken for all eternity instead of going into your omelet, it would still never be a chicken. It's not fertilized so it's not an animal, it's a product. If eating eggs really bothers you you don't have to. THere are lots of different kinds of vegetarians. Ovo, lacto-ovo, etc. You get to choose

Most vegetarians still consume both eggs and dairy products.

To put it simply, vegetarians eat anything that isn't meat. (or gelatin or lard.)

That leaves fruits, vegetables, breads, grains, pastas, egg dishes like quiches and omelets, cheese dishes like fondues, beans, legumes and peas, and virtually every dessert.

Eating eggs doesn't stop a life from happening because they aren't fertilized.

That said, vegans don't eat eggs because of the way the chickens are treated, and what is done with them once they stop producing eggs.

I think you should give vegetarianism a try. Ovo-vegetarians eat eggs. Good luck :)

I'm a vegan myself :)

i'm pecto vegetarian and i love eating eggs. i also like buying foods from the local asian grocery stores. a lot of their snacks are made from rice. and they have a lot of vegetable dishes. some may contain meat,so watch out...... oh and their ice cream is to die for. :)

Just eat whatever you believe you should. if you want eggs eat them.
and all ik about meals are like vegi burgers and stuff like that i tryed them and didnt like them but ik a bunch of ppl do so you could try that ?

it is your call if you eat eggs. while yes eggs weren't technically slaughtered. they should have become an animal. so by eating them you prevented an animal from happening.

vegetarians eat eggs, cheese and milk. Vegans don't eat anything that's comes from any animals or made with any part of any animals.

Some people who choose to be vegetarian value the health benefits more than anything else
