1:C

Scurvy is caused by a deficiency of vitamin C.

Scurvy is not associated with seasickness, as someone else said. The reason we associate scurvy with sailors (and pirates) is that on long trips at sea, it was hard to get fresh fruit or veg - both good sources of vitamin C. In scurvy, the body can't make collagen. A person with scurvy will be tired, pale, weak, spotty, with bleeding from the gums and other mucous membranes. Eventually the teeth fall out, and the person will get open sores on the skin. It's pretty nasty. British soldiers used to be called Limeys, because they brought barrels of vitamin C-rich limes on long journeys to prevent scurvy.

2:B

Carbohydrates have only 4 calories per gram, and supply energy for the body. Your body needs those good carbs from whole grains, fruits, and veggies!

Here's why you got confused:

Vitamins and Minerals are sometimes called micronutrients. This can be really confusing.

In nutrition, when we talk about the nutrients, sometimes called macronutrients, we are talking about fat, protein, and carbohydrate. We are not talking about vitamins or minerals.

Micro means small. Macro means large! Many vitamins and minerals are small molecules, so we call them micronutrients. Fat, protein, and carbohydrate are larger molecules, so we call them macronutrients, or just plain nutrients!

Good luck with your studying!

I have studied a lot of nutrition, and I used to teach health classes.

Scuvy is caused by vitamin c deficiency.

Carbs provide 4 calories per gram (protein does too, in case that's a question). Fat provides 9 calories per gram and vitamins and minerals cannot provide calories.

1) Is vitamin C
2) Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates and protein have 4 calories per gram. Fat has 9 calories per gram. Vitamins and minerals have no calories.

1. C
2. B

Sorry about the quiz.
